    50 year audiophile

Hi everyone and thanks for the advice so far. I'm not sure this is the place for me as everyone seems to have really esoteric gear here. Mine is good but not perhaps up to the standards here but it sounds better than anything I've ever heard.

I've been an audiophile since I was a 14 year old kid when my Dad got his Fisher console ($700!) in 1970 and while he fiddled with it I read the instructions and then told him how to operate it. He wanted me off his stereo and bought me a Heathkit for Cristmass and the rest is history.

I got my 1st real piece in 1979 - an SAE 2100 preamp which after 2 rebuilds is still the heart of my system. I don't do Kenwood, Pioneer, or Sansui (although the BA-F1 amps were great and sold on ebay for far more than I paid for them) or any of the "regular stuff". Since then my system has grown non-stop. I have SAE, dbx professional, 4 Onkyo power amps, JBL professional speakers for the highs, mid, mid bass, and VMPS Large subwoofers that go down to 17hz, and Belden cables with Canare connectors. 5 processors and 2 active crossovers says a lot. It's a 2 rack system that is as beautiful as it sounds. The power amp rack even has forced air cooling fans. Over the years I probably have invested 20K in this equipment - in 1979 the SAE preamp sold for $750 with the military discount - I wonder what a similar preamp would cost today?

I still can't figure out how to list my components in my signature block like everybody else does - I'm not that great with computers but can do wonders with stereo equipment.

Again - glad to be aboard and hope to learn and help where I can

    Hi and welcome.

My friend has JBL's with an outboard crossover and a bunch of amps. I met him after he moved into a new place, he keeps telling me he's going to set the system up again, he's working on it, thinking about it, etc. LOL Maybe someday I'll here it.

Guys here may have esoteric gear but no one is snobbish about it and this is one of the most friendly forums I've found.

    Re: 50 year audiophile

    Welcome aboard.

My gear list is not too esoteric and much of what I have is from the 90s aside from my 6 month old Luxman and Rega TT. But, none of that really matters here as the discussions are friendly and informative as well as the cream of the crop in gear. It's the best forum going for civility.

    Cheers

tj, welcome aboard. Brian (Shadowfax) said it best, the gear in reality is secondary, if it puts a smile on your face and has your feet tapping to the music then all is good. Way too many so-called audiophiles spend a life time chasing 'gear' without ever really knowing what they have listened to ...........
    Cheers ! …. Dave
