    Me want this....

    https://www.mcintoshlabs.com/product...ocessors/MX170

I’m guessing it will beat my $600 refurb Integra! LOL

Wonder how it compares to the Bryston SP4?

Very impressive looking. 12 HDMI inputs is more than enough for most people.

Love my MX 151. It sounds very natural and clean. It would be nice to have The latest HDR 4K HDMI whatever but I have only one source for that now, an OPPO UDP 205, so I just run it into the second HDMI input in my PJ and run the 7.1 analog outs into the MX-151. Works great.

This has been many years back, I compared a Mac processor to an Anthem, the Mac had their house sound, I preferred the Anthem for HT. Action movies need that impact and leading edge. IMO Circumstance had me actually end up with a Primare.

Me too. I ended up with Anthem then. Today, I would not look at Anthem at all.
The one to beat in that price range is Trinnov. Trinnov’s technology is tops!

agree; the Trinnov is a whole different level. you can find equal performance to the MX170 in a 15.1 Atmos processor at half the cost without the Mac name.

5 years from now; the Trinnov will be the one you will be glad you bought. i suppose if you have a wall full of Mac already then that's what you do.

i have an Anthem AVM 60 now and at $2k it was the right thing to buy 3 years ago for 11.1 speaker set up thinking it was a bridge purchase.

now considering one of the $5k-$8k 15.1 processors, or the Trinnov at double the price for 15.1. that's the question. since my main thing is my 2 channel room and music, my separate home theater is relatively compromised (other than the projector).

Well, that's definitely not the "budget" route for an SSP, but I doubt you'll have buyer's remorse. Which speakers are you going to run it with? We love our Oppo 205, by the way. Still isn't much new on the market that comes close. So long as they keep updating firmware, I don't have much reason to look elsewhere.

I considered the Panasonic UB9000 since it has HDR mapping technology that works in conjunction with the JVC, but with the recent firmware update in the JVC, it’s probably redundant. I thought about the NX9, but with only 100 inch screen and no opportunity for larger due to my pitched roof, it didn’t make sense. I considered the Sony 695es, but by all accounts, the JVC beats it and JVC is offering a free lamp until the end of May. Laser projectors were tempting, but too pricey.

    Speakers are MBL 101e mk2’s, B&W HTM1 D3 center, B&W CWM7.5 S2 x 4, B&W CCM7.5 S2 x 4, B&W DB1D subs x 2.

I’m also ripping out all my existing Inwall cabling and putting in the best Inwall cable from AudioQuest, adding AudioQuest’s best Subwoofer cables and more.

We have been selling more HT stuff than I could have imagined once we added B&W. So, adding Sony, JVC and Trinnov was a no brainer. We are certainly not going to sell $699 Marantz receivers and try to compete. With Trinnov and Bryston’s SP-4, we have some good offerings for the occasional HT customer.

Ah. I forgot your theater was in the upstairs room with the MBLs. That should make for a potent setup. You'll have to let us know how those MBLs do paired with the Diamond center. Can't get too much different in transducer technology than those two.

And I should have known that the new Trinnov meant you picked up the line. If only they were closer to the 10k price point I might be in the market. For my new theater my budget leaves me stuck in the no-mans-land that is the new crop of 16 channel pre-pros in the 4-8k range, all of which are having major teething pains. Makes me very hesitant to commit to a purchase. But I want one of the top tier bass management packages so I don't have too many other choices without a major change in cost.

It’s really three tiers with Trinnov on top IMO.

My thought pattern is these processors change so rapidly it hard to justify spending a lot. I'm satisfied with 13 channels but more importantly I did not want to get into the game of flipping a processor at that level every 18 months or so, as new video technology comes on board. To a degree the same applies to projector.
I have not put any real time into A B ing a Trinnov. My new project yeehaw.

I felt the same way about the Mc. The Trinnov is modular based and new HDMI standards or audio changes are as simple as popping in and out a board by the end user. They offer up to 16 and up to 32 channel versions. I won’t even get to 16 in my size of room, so I went in that direction. The 3D microphone it uses is pretty cool.

Trinnov stands out from the rest in that they have been doing hardware and software upgrades without requiring you to purchase a new model. For example, recent software upgrades have added DTS:X Pro. Granted, the platform is not that old (~5 years) but its design is based on general purpose computing capabilities, which is why they're able to do this when other companies aren't. And the new releases aren't delayed much because they're considered the top brand in both features and sound quality, and therefore work directly with Dolby, DTS, etc.

And honestly once you do a comparison, you will find them worth the price.

Trinnov seems to be the best out there for HT. Plus it has 2 channel pass though, and balanced inputs. The ability to bypass processing, so it can also be used for music with a good external DAC sets it apart from the SP4. I thought about going this route, but kept my SP3 and added a dedicated 2 channel pre.

The other thing you can do with the Trinnov Altitude processors is perform a calibration and create an optimizer profile and matching preset for your 2-channel setup, using the Altitude's digital output to feed your external DAC (just be careful to adjust levels to prevent digital clipping). The Altitude supports network streaming and Roon, and has several digital inputs. That being said the Altitude's analog output quality is outstanding, although you may certainly still prefer a different DAC for 2-channel listening.

Today we spent the day pulling proper wire, installing the new B&W Inwall speakers and mounting the projector. Tomorrow I have an install in Naples. Saturday I’ll tackle the Trinnov! Sunday paint and patch the holes.

I LOVE my EMM Labs 2 channel stack. I’d need to have it pulled from my cold dead hands to switch. .. my SP3 does good HT duty when needed.

    Hmm... paraphrasing this...

"Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy, I knew Jack Kennedy, Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you are no Jack Kennedy."

    My take would be:

“I have owned the SP3 for many years, I know the SP3 very well, the SP3 is good, but the SP3 is not Trinnov.”

    Re: Me want this....

I was up until midnight configuring the Trinnov. The manual is as thick as a phone book for a small city. That being said, it is well written and there are certainly lots of pictures showing you the steps along the way - and that’s just for the setup wizard! The advanced features look incredibly powerful. I haven’t got to those yet.

But compared to the likes of Denon/Marantz, the setup is far more complex. The 3D microphone is really cool and they show you on a 3D Grid the measurements and placement of the speakers according to the 3D microphone. It’s spot on.

The clocking/HDMI sync on the Trinnov is very sensitive. I was without picture for about 30 minutes before I figured out what had gone wrong. Turned everything off, unplugged the Trinnov, back on again and I was back in business. What had happened was that I had turned on the small monitor to test HDMI 2 and it being a totally different resolution than the projector, must have screwed something up!

I wanted to get up and running and test everything out. I watched 20 minutes of 1917 in 4K and was blown away. The Trinnov immersive sound is the real deal. The picture quality from the JVC NX7 was outstanding.

I have a Magico S7/VAC/Critical Mass install today in Naples, but I will for sure be back to tweaking things on Saturday.

You can try connecting your projector to HDMI 2 and your small monitor to HDMI 1, as I believe HDMI 2 is the master output and HDMI 1 will downscale. Also, if you run into video sync issues you can sometimes switch the source input until it locks on, and then switch back. I've seen that happen if the display EDID dynamically changes, or if the source output dynamically changes.

Just some trivia, in 2015 JBL and Trinnov entered into a partnership on JBL Synthesis HT processors. I think now the more expensive models of JBL have Trinnov tech where the lower model is Arcam.

Just curious Mike, are all the speakers in your install in-wall or just those for Atmos? If all are in-wall, what is your impression of the dispersion for surround sound?

Great question. I have four 7 series B&W Inwall speakers with back boxes, four 7 series B&W ceiling (height) speakers, B&W HTM1 D3 center, two B&W DB1D subs and of course, my MBL 101e Mk2’s for front left and right.

I’m very very happy with the Inwall w/back boxes. Note the term back box is misleading as the box actually attached to the bottom of the speaker. The purpose of the back box is for bass response.

The Trinnov is so freaking good I can’t believe it. So powerful. So complex!

How well do the MBL integrate with the rest of B&W speakers given that they are so different?

The Trinnov can do Auro-3D decoding. Have you tried that setting for music listening yet? There are discs that come encoded with Auro. But I understand that the Trinnov can also convert any Dolby Atmos discs to Auro-3D. Have you tried that yet?

Very interested is hearing your experience with the Trinnov.

The MBL’s are so great for audio, that I just couldn’t give them up anytime soon. The 800D3’s of course would integrate with the rest better, but...the MBL’s are so amazing for 2 channel audio.

    I haven’t tried the Auro-3D - yet!

    Mike,

It would interesting to try the Trinnov as a preamp (without using its advanced features) for 2-channel listening and compare it to your current high end preamp.

I would be interested too. But it would be good to also do 2-channel plus Trinnov DSP correction to compare (Trinnov DSP that uses the 3D microphone is supposed to be the best in the market).

i have a Trinnov Altitude 16 now incoming for my Home Theater. it replaces an Anthem AVM60. i've had my separate Home Theater for years; three years ago i did update my video side to a good high level. now it's the audio side's turn.

i'll be switching from a 7.2.4 Revel speaker set-up, to 9.3.6 speaker set-up with 3 Funk Audio 18.0 subwoofers. the sources will be Roon, an Oppo 203, plus a Kaleidascape movie server.

my goal is to optimize my room for immersive codecs, and once i've got everything in place and tweaked, to see how close high level dsp immersive music might compare to my high level 2 channel room.

Mike, you will LOVE it. Be ready for a complicated setup though. The manual is a small phone book. But once properly setup, OMG, it’s just on another level.

if you recall i was one of the one's pushing you from your lust with the Mac (the title to this thread) to the Trinnov. and now you are a fan (and dealer).

i respect the heck out of the difference between an amateur set-up and professional, but i do want to learn enough to appreciate what i get for my money. so i will spend a few months playing around with it and learning. then, i plan on having Adam Pelz come and really dial it in.

after he is gone i need to have a good enough feel for it, so i can do small tweaks myself.

i respect the heck out of the difference between an amateur set-up and professional, but i do want to learn enough to appreciate what i get for my money. so i will spend a few months playing around with it and learning. then, i plan on having Adam Pelz come and really dial it in.

after he is gone i need to have a good enough feel for it, so i can do small tweaks myself.
Yes, just had to bring myself to the price point. Now that I have it and seen and heard what it can do, there’s no going back.

i'll be switching from a 7.2.4 Revel speaker set-up, to 9.3.6 speaker set-up with 3 Funk Audio 18.0 subwoofers. the sources will be Roon, an Oppo 203, plus a Kaleidascape movie server.

my goal is to optimize my room for immersive codecs, and once i've got everything in place and tweaked, to see how close high level dsp immersive music might compare to my high level 2 channel room.
