Hegel vs Pass - can anyone describe the differences?

I've heard a fair amount of Pass gear and have a good feel for their 'house sound'.

    How does Hegel compare?
    Speakers: Magico M-Project w/MPods
Amps: CAT Legend -> CAT JL7s
Analog: Kronos Pro Limited Edition / Black Beauty tonearm / Zyx Universe Premium, Ortofon A95
    Digital: Roon->Vivaldi DAC/Upsampler
    Cables/Power: Kubala Sosna Elation ICs & SCs / Shunyata Denali 6000T & PC's / Furutech outlets

Joe has had both, hopefully he will weigh in.

I've demoed the integrated and owned XA160.5's. My Hegel H30's arrive today....I'll let you know.

I think the Hegel is a wee bit quicker sounding.

I assume there are more differences than that.

Some things I'd like to know about are tonal balance, glare/distortion, transparency, etc.

The H30 definitely feels quicker. I had Pass XA100.5's. The bass is tighter and more solid on the H30. There is way more control. It has been a while since I had the Pass but I truly prefer the H30. The H30 has a big, open, clear sound with a touch of sweetness. No harshness or grain with a full meat on the bone tone. Better than Burmester without the nervousness. It's really not a fair comparison. I absolutely love my H30. The H30 runs a little warm. Heat sink temps are c. 100F to 120F. You know the Pass is HOT, HOT, HOT.

It's actually an amp that was designed as a mono amp. It was only after the fact that they decided to build in the functionality to use it as a stereo amp.

I've read differing opinions about which way people think it sounds better, stereo vs mono, are you planning on do such a test??

Ready to 'dump them'? No. Are they lifers? No. Do I change equipment casually? No. Each piece of equipment is auditioned and purchased to get me closer to my goals. No gear is without its flaws and if I can find something that either has less flaws or has more synergy with my system and/or goals then I will contemplate a change.

I am curious about the Hegel because it's often matched with Magico - and I have Magico speakers.

Re: Hegel vs Pass - can anyone describe the differences?

I read this a while ago on TAS regarding the Pass sound

" Each generation of amplifiers he has produced has been a bit cleaner, has better low-level transients and dynamics, and is sweeter and more detailed. He has also been consistent in the way he “voices” his amplifiers: open and detailed, not warm and forgiving; extended highs and flat levels of upper midrange energy; equally flat mid and upper bass, with no gimmicks to give the sound more punch and “rhythm.”

    So this is neutral ?

If that what it means maybe its the reason I chose an ATI over Pass. the ATI is so neutral for a lot less money and has great quality and durability.

In general, the Pass gear is fairly neutral, but it does differ slightly from model to model. Even with the .5 or .8 series there are some tonal balance differences.

I understand. I wouldn't worry about having just the one H30. The sound will probably be purer in stereo and there's plenty of power. I know I wouldn't be considering the monos!

Fair enough. Here's the old listening room...with my little performers. Current gear; KEF LS50, VPI traveller, Ortofon 2m black, Oppo 105, and leftover HT front end Parasound p7 and A23, Grover Huffman IC and cords.

Absolutely adorable! I bet you get a very solid center image with your daughter singing along to the music. The Hegel H30 should be a huge step up in performance, enjoy it!

Unfortunately I'm too late for audio preferences for the older one...she into the Disney artists and top 40 (the clean stuff). But my younger will sit and listen to my affectionately referedto "M" collections - Myles, Mingus, Mo (Keb), Morrison, and Meppelin. I may have cheated on one of those. But she still likes them

Thanks! I'm already enjoying them in a (very) less than ideal setup. Lumin direct into the Parasound A23...shh don't tell the audio gods.

Re: Hegel vs Pass - can anyone describe the differences?

The pass is allot more neutral . I have the Xp-30 and 100.5 . , the Hegel at first seemed quicker to me and seemed to have a more open sound . But once I went to the xp-30 the 100.5 came to life . I was running the anniversary audio research and as crazy as it sounds it didn't do justice to the 100.5 . Apples to apples I would say the Heg while I can't say is better but would be my choice as it seemed to fit well with all my rigs and never tended to color anything or add anything tone wise .. But if you are running an XP-30 I would def suggest the pass amps , there's just something to love about that pairing . It is a way underpriced setup for the quality of sound .. Together they sound nothing like solid state to me but def not tube .. Of you end up leaning towards the pass let me know maybe I'll pawn mine off , I'm itching to get the new .8 series
