    Re: Coronavirus Live Updates

That is the most comprehensive, science-based article/interview about the Covid-19 that I have seen.
The speaker is the head of South Corea’s response to the virus. The questioner did an excellent job of asking the right questions.
This South Korean doctor, out-Fauci our Dr. Fauci. I highly recommend the whole thing. Lots of solid, scientific, and factual information here.
It is 30 mins long, but folks should make time to watch it.

    Re: Coronavirus Live Updates

We just received a Emergency Alert from the FL Surgeon General:

"Stay at home if 65+ or have medical conditions. All following social distancing."

Guessing it's state wide. Anyone else in FL get it?

    Two things that surprised me:

    1. The Governors of FL and TX allowed spring break to happen.
    2. The mayor of NO claims somebody should have told her not to hold Mardi Gras in the middle of a pandemic because she had no clue it was a bad idea.

And FL had the Dem Primary as well. Lots of seniors in FL. and many work at the polls ... only a 20% or so turn out but we shouldn't have had it IMO.

(not meant to be a political post, but the naming of an event that IMO shouldn't have happened)

Wait... wasn’t that the same state that kept beaches open and gladly allowed spring break parties just a week ago? “Say it ain't so, Joe."

Yes it's the same place. A Forest Gump moment - my mama told me .... And it's only going to get worse as people from other states - that may or may not be infected - are coming here as well.

Respectfully, many counties - including ours - closed some beaches. A lawsuit was filed against the Gov for not closing the beaches on 3/20 ... The Gov did close Broward and Palm Beach beaches on 3/20 I believe ... He placed gathering limits of 10 on others ... As far as I know Brevard Beaches are still open

All 18 miles of our beaches in Flagler Cty are closed, have been for a few days. I'm 67 and I don't leave the house unless I go to my doctors in Jacksonville. I just stay inside, listen to music, watch TV, read. Thats about it

We are awaiting a friend that has been transferred back to the USA from Sydney AU. He currently is waiting to see if he will be able to get a flight out.

The situation changed last week when a cruise ship with infected passengers were allowed to leave the ship in Sydney. 800 people have been flown to Germany to be treated.

Not sure who was in control of allowing a ship to disembark?

Yeah, I have a photography buddy who got stuck in Australia for over a week. It also cost him $10,000 for his flight back to L.A.

The passengers on the cruise ship should been isolated, quarantined and screened on-land after disembarking in the same manner the Princess cruise ship that was arrived at the Port of Oakland a few weeks ago.

Its not a good idea to keep large number of infected passengers confined on a cruise ship because the air is recirculated among the cabins, which is how such a large no. of passengers becomes infected in the first place.

I consider myself more informed about the Covid-19 than the average individual. What the interview did for me, is that it summarized the most up to date (factual) information in one place. Yes, I had heard most of what the south corean doctor said, but I also learned new stuff such as the App that they are using to quarantine people and how they can tell if someone is not following it. Also new to me the process of vaporization that can allow the virus to hang around in the air which can make the 6 feet distance between folks not enough.
Sure, one can get piecemeal information from all kind of sources and then decide which is good and which one is not. Or one can watch that video and see why the CDC recommendation that people don’t need masks is not right.

While understanding the purpose of CDC is to deter people from hoarding masks, this recommendation is reckless at best and criminally negligent at worst. Now the entire country wants to shame people who wear mask in public. This practice actually saves lives. Look at Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore where there’s a strong culture of wearing masks.

When the price of making a mistake is high, good reliable information is at a premium. I would not consider this trivial.

Professor Kim is at the helm of the South Korean Covid-19 effort and when someone of his stature gives his time for a half an hour interview you have to realize that this is an effort by the South Korean government to share good reliable info via social media. The target audience is the young Asian community and there is an obvious effort to cover each and every step in a methodical manner. They are taking the lowest common factor in terms of audience by design. It may come across as simple but there are nuggets of info in there.

Two bits I can share that was new for me:

Symptoms of loss of taste is something I have not seen/heard anywhere else.

There has been a lot of praise for South Korea for their response to Covid-19. I was very curious to know how they did it and from this interview it is clear that they have faced pandemics recently with SARS, MERS and Bird Flu. They have already been through hell and now have strategies in place including a mature supplier base of testing kits etc. It also explains their readiness to wear face masks.

    ----------

    Thanks for the information.

The preparedness that South Korea had was talked very early on in the USA on the news I listen to. This was concluded that from the experience of having gone through other viruses you mentioned they had a protocol in place.

It is funny that every time I eat food my first bite is a calculation of can I taste it or smell it. This too was on reports here for quiet a while.

I think the masking wearing being pushed here might have been a good thing. On the other hand the fact that there was and still is no toilet paper on the shelves leads me to believe many people would not have been able to purchase them either.

What I felt was the reason for not telling Americans to wear a mask was 1. staying clear of each other was enough and 2. don't take away the possibility of medical staff not having enough. It seemed logical at the time. I am not sure anyone really was sure how to proceed at the beginning of the outbreak short of just panicking.

It does surprise me that the CDC would not have the influence to be sure we had a stockpile of masks, gloves and intubation and other equipment.
If the news is correct we had 125,000 intubation machines in storage that Pres. Obama released during the H1N1 outbreak. How could no one in the government chain down to the person that allowed them out of the warehouse not have requisitioned or suggested replacements?

That is a really good question asked recently that Mr Biden has easily side stepped and finger pointed when in fact it was his administration that did not re-prepare us. Will not say more because this thread cannot go Political here.

I think the ball would’ve been dropped by most administrations. I was not a big fan of the Obama presidency but I wouldn’t Point the finger at him I don’t think that was his job. I just don’t have a lot of faith in any government entity to be efficient and effective

You do know the current administration was inaugurated in 2017 and not in 2019 or 2020, right?

Experts in the field of contagious diseases have warned us for years about our country’s unpreparedness in case of a pandemic. For example, Look up in YouTube TedTalks by Bill Gates (2015) and Larry Brilliant (2006). For decades we have planned for wars, nuclear wars even. We failed to act and plan when we had time to do so. Quite simply, we dropped the ball.

How may examples do you need to refute your statement -- let me give a few -- South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Denmark, Iceland. Even India (a third world country) has taken decisive steps to try and stem the outbreak.
In regards to USA, it was not just hard but impossible for our current administration to have planned for this -- a more incompetent, lazy and heartless administration I cannot imagine.

Let’s all try to keep the politics out of things. There is enough going on that we don’t need politics too. Let’s stick to the science and try to all get through this alive.

You would think after 12K died from Swine Flu in 2009/10 we would be better prepared , but with yearly flu death numbers exceeding even that lofty number most in our Government are not prioritizing and preparing..

obviously most of that will will change now ....

Unfortunately it is all politics right now. What we know (and don't know) about the virus and the illness it causes is insignificant compared to the social and economic upheaval occuring right now. Perhaps even more notable is the number of "know-nothings" posting here about things they know nothing about. There is already enough misinformation out there from nominally reputable sources; this topic will not serve to filter that out, it will only reinforce it.

You are a physician. Did you watch the interview with the head of the South Korean force fighting the CV (a link was posted a couple of days ago)? Granted, you are ER not an epidemiologist, but if you have a chance to watch it may be helpful for some of us to hear your take on it. I hope that that is not what you are referring to as misinformation.

    Re: Coronavirus Live Updates

I think that is an excellent summation. It illustrates my point above, that the main problems we are facing now are social and political, not scientific or medical (except in the sense that our health care systems are being overwhelmed). It should be obvious that the measures which have helped to control the outbreak in S. Korea can't work here for any number of reasons (although I think they could have, if the political will to do so early had been there). He also points out the relative futility of counting on a vaccine to have a significant impact on the current situation.

Even J&J said in the article I linked that a useable vaccine will not be ready until early next year. It is being fast tracked but still has to go thru close to normal processes.

And you are so right with this..."the main problems we are facing now are social and political, not scientific or medical"

And the whole world should be outraged and doing something about this

A vaccine may never happen. As was mentioned in the video, the typical development time for a viral vaccine is 18 years, and in the last 50 years the only really usable, effective viral vaccine developed is the varicella vaccine. We still have not been able to develop and manufacture an effective influenza vaccine despite decades of work. Ebola, HIV, Dengue, etc, still in development.

Sonoma County in Northern California has an excellent COVID-19 dashboard which is updated a number of times/day.

Question: Why doesn't Alameda County have something like this?
