Coronavirus Live Updates
Glad I work from home!
This is an informative article. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/04/w...irus-news.html
While many things stood out, this made me mad:
China’s censors blocked social media posts about the spread of the coronavirus as early as December, according to a report released Tuesday by the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab.
Many in China have expressed anger at measures taken by the authorities to snuff out the spread of early warnings online. Focus has fallen in particular on Li Wenliang, a doctor who sought to alert others about the disease, only to be held by police and accused of spreading rumors. He would later die from the virus, triggering almost unanimous anger and mourning online.

Re: Coronavirus Live Updates
CNN reporting:
In New Hampshire, first patient violated self-isolation order. Now a second person has CV.
New York now has 6 confirmed cases of CV:
- A female healthcare worker who traveled from Iran
- A lawyer from Westchester County
- The lawyer's wife
- His son, a 20-year-old Yeshiva student
- His 14-year-old daughter
- A neighbor who drove him to the hospital
The husband of the healthcare worker who traveled from Iran tested negative, Cuomo said.
Several tests across the state also came back negative including from Buffalo where families were being monitored after Italy travel.

I can’t say how I know, but I know. The guy here in Sarasota, was in the hospital since Feb 22nd before they decided to test him on Feb 29 for the Corona Vitus. Now he’s not cooperating with respect to his “contact history.” He’s not telling them anything.

I don’t think we should panic, just use proper hand washing procedures and other techniques. Keep the elderly away from heavily populated public places. Just use common sense.

Re: Coronavirus Live Updates
CNN is essentially doing updates as close to real time as possible. https://www.cnn.com/asia/live-news/c...hnk/index.html
There are now 137 cases in US:
Here's the state breakdown of the US cases:
- Arizona – 2
- California – 33
- Florida — 3
- Georgia — 2
- Illinois — 4
- Massachusetts — 2
- New Hampshire — 2
- New York — 6
- North Carolina — 1
- Oregon — 3
- Rhode Island — 2
- Washington state — 27 (includes 9 fatalities)
- Wisconsin — 1
The US State Department's travel warning for China is at the highest level — Level 4: Do not travel. The department's warning for travel to Iran, which was already at Level 4 prior to the outbreak, was recently updated to add information about coronavirus. The State Department is advising travelers to reconsider travel to Italy and South Korea, while travel to specific areas of those countries — Lombardy and Veneto in Italy and Daegu in South Korea — is discouraged. The department also advises travelers to reconsider travel to Mongolia.
Level 2 warnings, urging increased caution, are in effect for Japan, Hong Kong and Macau due to the outbreak.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is discouraging nonessential travel to China, South Korea, Italy and Iran.
Japan and Hong Kong carry lower-level CDC advisories.

No. It is still dead, and I have no idea what is the problem. I guess I should try hooking it to the main system. I know the XLR works there, and I could verify the RCA.
For music I am listening to the cable music channels. It actually sounds pretty good with the sound bar.

Re: Coronavirus Live Updates
No problem as I would rather read about your Lumin anytime than the CV. I hope you discover what the problem is soon.
That said, the global impact of the virus is now over 100,000 infected in at least 85 countries and territories.
It is somewhat interesting to read how certain countries are handling - and not handling - this crisis.
Just a reminder that the majority of people that seem to contract CV don't die from it.
While there is no need to panic, we should stay up to date with what the Department of Health [insert various other names] in our respective locations suggest that we do. One of the things we may do to help stop the spread of the virus is keep everything clean. Re: Coronavirus Live Updates
Yes, that is what the stats are showing us early on. And though some younger people have died from it (TMK the youngest is 36 yoa so far) the elderly are actually at greatest risk - esp those with underlying heath issues - like my 88 yoa mother, my 60 yoa brother, a lot of my military and law enforcement friends and myself, etc. At lot of audiophiles are older too ...
According to the Surgeon General - 80% that contract it get a mild dose - like a simple cold or flu. The remainder - a lesser number for sure - get sicker ... But even one loss life is one too many.
Again, IMO we shouldn't panic but we shouldn't be negligent in taking the proper precautions against CV either.

Coronavirus Live Updates
Maybe this bug will do some good?
Everyone is being encouraged to wash their hands. I often feel like I'm the only one that washes my hands after using a public or any restroom. The number of Americans that visit a bathroom stall (male or female), open the stall door after finishing business and walk right by the wash sinks provided never getting a drop of h2o or soap on their hands is shocking.
A few years back when visiting Vancouver Canada with my wife, we both commented about how refreshing it was to see every Canadian that entered a public bathroom did indeed wash their hands and then re-enter public spaces afterwards. The Canadians have it right.
Perhaps the childlike encouragement and reminders on the news today of washing ones hands thoroughly and often will finally settle in with Americans.... but, maybe not if the behavior is not inherent already.Avanti Audio

Re: Coronavirus Live Updates
IMO, there is no question that the reaction to this epidemic is orders of magnitude worse than anything the disease itself might throw at us. Children don't seem to get anything other than a mild cold, and healthy people aren't dying in significant numbers if at all (which does happen during an influenza epidemic, including significant numbers of previously healthy children dying EVERY YEAR in this country alone). As each day goes by, data that this is not an especially dangerous virus to a given individual continues to accumulate; in fact, the biggest danger may be just that, that it spreads from people who are minimally ill or show no symptoms at all.

Did you see any of this hysteria, or press coverage, last 'flu season' when '61000 people died in the USA of influenza, and millions worldwide..?..Covid 19 is an upper respiratory, infection, that to date, has a morbidity and mortality rate approaching the flu. There is no reason, currently,. for any of the panic that is press driven in this country. People are going to die but the average healthy person, if they contract the disease may not even have significant symptoms. It is too early to in the disease to say whether contracting the virus will give you immunity going forward. This virus, like most viruses, is able to mutate. What will probably happen is that the CDC and labs across the country will come up with an immunization, possibly yearly, that will confer at least partial protection...like the current flu shot. The reality is that < 50% of people that are offered the flu shot don't get it..Dont forget to buy extra 'toilet paper;...

Re: Coronavirus Live Updates
This is simply not true. Flu mortality rate is generally <0.1%. CDC revised last week of its estimation on COVID-19 mortality rate to be 3.4% (although I’d expect this to change once we know more about COVID-19 in the near future). That means COVID-19 is 34x more deadly than flu. If you use flu mortality rate as 0.05% (in some years), it’s 68x more deadly.
Besides, flu has vaccine and known antiviral medication. We have none for COVID-19.
-
March 7, 2020, 08:57 PM #26
Re: Coronavirus Live Updates
actually..the CDC has recently revised those mortality #s as the original rate ...they realized...did not include the # of people who contracted the virus that were actually asymptomatic..and weren't counted. As for the vaccine...that should be available before years end...Bottom line..people do not need to stay shut up in their houses and schools and businesses do not need to shut down because there are cases of Covid 19 in the community. People are going to get the virus and get over it ......just like influenza..

Coronavirus Live Updates
Even using original rate of 2%, that’s 20x more deadly than flu in a bad year and 40x more deadly than flu in a good year.
You can draw your own conclusion about whether if it is necessary to stay home and shut down business based on above numbers. But fact is it’s more deadly than flu and no one should say otherwise because this is about health.

Re: Coronavirus Live Updates
According to the CDC, the flu vaccine's effectiveness for people over 65 is typically 10-15%, and that's only for the strains in the vaccine; if a new or different strain is epidemic, then the effectiveness is 0%. So let's not pretend that we have an effective vaccine for influenza.
Anti-viral medications work just as well against CoVid19 as they do against influenza (although they are different medications for each), which is to say somewhat but not well. There is no good evidence that anti-viral medications affect the mortality rate of either disease.
Although we have good data on the number of deaths associated with CoVid19, we have no reliable data at all on the total number of infected people, and it appears it will be a long time (if ever) before that number is known. What is clear is that unlike influenza, children and healthy adults under 40 (or perhaps even 50 or 60) die very rarely or not at all from CoVid19 infectionRob

I agree there’s still a lot of unknowns about covid-19, unlike flu. But before you do, you still have to go by the number CDC estimates. This will continue to change for sure. Better or worse, no one really knows. But suggesting now that it’s the same or less lethal than flu is irresponsible. When it comes to life and death, there’s no such thing as over-precaution.
People over 60 still count the same as people under 60.

I mean, a bunch of old fat guys with poor hygiene squished together in tiny hotel rooms with the HVAC turned off. What could go wrong?

Re: Coronavirus Live Updates
I bet it will be axed on Monday.
They have a big problem, since they can't just move to October / September, like many other events, due to proximity of RMAF. They can try July or June (there have been a summer CES for many years afterall) and hope for the best.
If they cancel altogether, then the RMAF would get much stronger this year as most companies would probably divert all their money there, which in turn will put them in a bad starting position for 2021.Adam

Re: Coronavirus Live Updates
Much too early to know what the CV will do yet.
As we all know flu season is normally during the winter months then slows down during the hotter months. However, from what I'm reading, there's not enough info on CV yet to know if it is or isn't like the flu.
At a Pentagon briefing last week, the director of the Center for Infectious Diseases Research was already speaking about a possible "second wave" of CV next winter:
"This is why it’s really important to understand that a lot of what we’re doing now is getting ourselves ready for what we’re calling the second wave of this," Nelson warned. https://www.cnn.com/world/live-news/...04e9d09060460c
IMO while hoping for the best, prepare for the worse ... i.e. a lot of shows may be cancelled.

From a Saturday morning FB post by Mark Freed from AXPONA...
Mark Freed Hi everybody. The last 48 hours have brought a welcome outpouring of calls, emails and posts amid the escalation of coronavirus fears. The AXPONA team has been working on a contingency plan that will continue through the weekend for a possible solution. We hope to have news to share by Monday. Please stay tuned.

Re: Coronavirus Live Updates
Very interesting. The only reason I made my post is because most (all?) my manufactures were pulling out. They haven’t said it publicly, but privately, they mentioned it. I feel bad for the folks at Axpona. Honestly, these shows are sooooo much work. We started planning ours for 2021, two weeks ago. This is beyond their control and to make these tough decisions on the eve of the show, is really difficult. I wish them luck and hope they make the best decision in the end (whatever that may be). Axpona is an amazing show.

Re: Coronavirus Live Updates
I understand the deep concern many have in regards to the Axpona audio show, the biggest audio show on the planet. On the other hand I understand the deep concern many have in regards to the Coronavirus, with the possibility of dire consequences on infection spread and that can even result in deaths.
We highly value our audio, we highly value our families and friends and all people.
Without healthy people hiend audio doesn't have the same music listening impact.
In my sincere honest calculated opinion.
Take good care of one another everyone.~ Bob ~

RIP Dan, I'm missing him...every single day.
I also remember when he told us the passing of his lovely wife not that too long ago.
I forgot her name but it was a name that I like very much.

Re: Coronavirus Live Updates
here is an interesting TED video describing how germs and viruses travel on planes:
https://www.ted.com/talks/raymond_wa..._them#t-335896
Using fluid dynamics, he created computational simulations of how air moves on airplanes, and what he found is disturbing -- when a person sneezes on a plane, the airflow actually helps to spread pathogens to other passengers.Adam

Re: Coronavirus Live Updates
A young lady has the Cv in our city now. The father didn't obey the quarantine. She is said to be doing better, age 20.
If Axpona is canceled just think of just the financial impact of that one event, then it makes more sense the financial panic. You have to wonder if enough people potentially would carry CV to warrant canceling some of these events. I was surprised the large concert event was canceled in Austin. I suppose the responsible thing to do is error on the side of caution though.Aurender ACS10 w/Audioquest Diamond USB, Esoteric N05xd

To keep this in perspective for the regular flu:
The CDC predicts that at least 12,000 Americans will die from the flu in any given year.
