GENEVA (AFP) - The World Health Organisation said on Friday (March 20) that the original epicentre in China of the coronavirus outbreak at last reporting no new cases gave hope to the rest of the world battling the pandemic.

The city of Wuhan registered no new cases of Covid-19 in 24 hours - for the first time since reporting its first case in December in an outbreak that has gone on to infect more than 250,000 people around the world and kill more than 11,000 people.

"Yesterday, Wuhan reported no new cases for the first time since the outbreak started," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual news conference in Geneva.

"Wuhan provides hope for the rest of the world that even the most severe situation can be turned around.

"Of course, we must exercise caution; the situation can reverse. But the experience of cities and countries that have pushed back this coronavirus gives hope and courage to the rest of the world."

China as a whole is now reporting only a handful of new infections each day - all of them apparently from overseas visitors - as the crisis has shifted from Asia to Europe, which has now reported more deaths than China.

Ps. The city of Wuhan has been under lock down for 2 months. Movement restrictions have been eased but routes into and out of the city remain blocked for the time being.
    That is good news.

Here in MN! Yes, we can prescribe it for non COVID illnesses like RA. The issue is that this is a worldwide problem and the drug must be saved for the severely ill COVID patients. People want to take it as a preventative or have it on hand if they get sick. There is not enough drug to go around. We are already have patients come in or call wanting the drug.

And this is what is happening just like food and toilet paper-

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/busin...rus-treatment/

I am in the front line seeing patients daily with coughs, fevers, shortness of breath and I don't have access to the drugs for me or my family. Neither do all the hospital employees and we are more at risk than the general public. If fact. There is a shortage of PPE gear for healthcare professionals because the public is hoarding it.

And here is another article demonstrating the issue-

IMO you should not be using hydroxychloroquine for your severely ill Covid patients. In Nevada and California, at least, the state medical boards have circulated evidence-based (as much as possible) guidelines, and like every other professional organization around the world, those drugs (hydroxychloroquine, chloroquine, azithromycin) are not among the currently recommended treatments, although they may become part of some of the ongoing or future studies.

That is because the results of the benefits of Hydroxychloroquine is anecdotal at best given the relatively small number of patients that has seen improvement of their illness is so small and patients still died on the drug.

FWIW, A friend who is suspected of having CV is currently under treatment with hydroxychloroquine and Azathioprine. He is feeling well with no fever since he started treatment.

You can't prove that it is because of the drugs as the majority of patients have very mild symptoms and many are asymptomatic. You need a large number of patients in a controlled study. Do you know how many small studies showed improvement with drugs only to be dispelled in larger controlled studies. The medical literature is full of them. And just ask the drug companies of their failures.

The U.S system of Government is not helpful in quickly implementing measures needed to slow the virus.

Much of the enforcement of public health is a power held by a city or state. Different cities and states can decide to confront the expanding outbreak in a slightly different way.

Furthermore, Vox reports that draconian measures like lockdowns, especially when paired with aggressive diagnostic testing, isolation of the sick, and contact tracing – actions which have been effective at slowing the virus spread elsewhere – might not be legal, per the Constitution.

    Re: Coronavirus Live Updates

We have too many selfish people in the U.S. for a lock down and total quarantine to work unfortunately. FK constitutional rights as we are talking about saving thousands if not potentially hundreds of thousands of lives and possibly eradicating the virus.

And people will lose their homes, jobs and apartments. I don't get landlords threatening to evict people who can't pay their rent because their employer has shut down during the outbreak and they live paycheck to paycheck. Who do they think is going to rent the apartments during this time. Thankfully state governments have intervened. The federal government needs to not give everyone in the U.S. a check. They need to give more money to people who have not been able to work and do not have much savings. I would give my check to someone in need. They should also give these people total tax refunds for the year. We need to show compassion, understanding, generosity and forgiveness during this time.

Trump just lost his reelection IMO. He called the virus a hoax and did not take it seriously. He tried to censor the CDC and now it is too little too late. What an ass.

People need to remember Italy 60 million people, the US 327 million people. Test results would be higher when performed due to the amount of US people that travel aboard monthly.

Please keep in mind that the author of this piece is a writer/journalist with no medical background. He does use a variety of appropriate sources, but IMHO his lack of knowledge results in some questionable conclusions. Dr. Frieden’s (former head of CDC) article at cnn.com (sorry no link) appears to be to be a better summary (to be sure, with some of the same conclusions and recommendations)

It's very easy to look back and criticize actions by the (President/Government) in this unprecedented pandemic.
Perhaps if you had been put in charge we would have been over this crisis by now.

I am a Landlord. In order to evict someone there has to be a period of time in which the tenant has not paid.
Then one needs to file papers in court and receive a court date. Once in court a Judgement can be obtained. Then a period of time is given for it to "cure". All this before an eviction can occur.
This "process" usually takes at least 3 weeks minimum.
Be wary of reports that have Landlords evicting people loosing their jobs due to the Corona virus. Generally, there has not been enough time since the closures for this to be the case.
In discussion with other Landlords we are trying to access the tenants situation and work with them thru this crisis. Reducing rents and or free rent for the short time are being implemented by most.
Remember, being a landlord is a business and we provide a much needed service.. Loan payments, taxes, utilities, maintenance etc need to be met.
The cost of an eviction and then cleaning out and freshening the apartment is an expense that landlords try to avoid if possible by working with the existing tenants. Especially now.
We are all in this together. Lets act that way.

A friend emailed me and advised that the thread I began was falling apart. This thread was begun with the intention of informing others of the COVID-19 problem. I respectfully ask that members keep the main point the main point.

IMO, with the various professions and experiences represented on this forum we can be of great assistance to one another through such a time. Also, having a place to just discuss such a world-wide problem may be helpful. A post you make or discover elsewhere may just save a life?

With this in mind some topics that may be helpful for some here:

What measures are you taking thru this time?
Where do you live and where are you locating supplies for you and your family?
What are you personally doing to help others in your community thru this mess?
What helpful videos have you found on COVID-19?
How has your job been impacted?
Do you personally know of a friend that has COVID-19? How and what are they doing?
If martial law happened tomorrow are you prepared for it? How are you prepared for it?
I’m sure there are many more topics that may be of assistance as well.

Thanks in advance for keeping this thread on track.

One would hope that landlords, mortgage holders, etc. would realize not only that human decency is better upheld by working with renters and homeowners to find ways for everyone to be happy, but also that there is no long-term benefit to trying to foreclose or evict if there are no new renters or buyers to take the place of those evicted.

As far as politics goes, unfortunately at this time governments' (not only ours) responses to this pandemic and panic are as much a part of the story as the disease itself. It probably didn't need to be this way.

Lives are being lost. Things need to be looked at truthfully. When human lives are on the line, esp. in the range of possibly tens of thousands, everything needs to be questioned - financial, social, political and moral.

There is a reason most audio forums have a strict policy against political threads and discussions. This maybe the time to talk about the coronavirus, but this is not the place for it in my opinion. Politics can ruin relationships which is why audio forums try and stay out of politics.

Besides, if I want to know the latest pandemic news I turn on the TV or read news sites on the web. You can get your daily dose of finger pointing, trashing your favorite villain, and keep up on the conspiracy theories. I don’t go to audio forums to keep informed about the coronavirus virus.

I would like to keep this thread going, but yes, please, let’s not discuss politics or use those political fingers to point blame. This isn’t the place for playing the blame game or conspiracy theories or whatever. That gets political.

Let’s stick to discussing just the virus, medical, science, etc.

Here are a few helpful links my company just sent out that can be better trusted than the normal Media outlets

    https://www.un.org/en/coronavirus

    https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html
This is a live map that shows the total number of confirmed cases in each country. We would suggest not obsessing over this but your focus should be on the number of recovered patients which is much higher than the death total. Also, important to note is that this does not take into account those who have had the virus with mild symptoms and were therefore not tested.

Just checking the latest reports on the spread in Michigan.
It appears that areas with a more global mobile population are the ones that are being hit earlier, while the more rural counties are virtually virus (reported) free.
Is this similar in your state?

    Re: Coronavirus Live Updates

jadedavid That appears to be somewhat similar to FL. Some of our counties are "reported" as virus free, but others that have a more dense population have a greater number of cases. But there is more testing in these dense areas. For example, the Miami-Dade and Broward County areas are the worst here and have more testing ...

NOTE: Miami International Airport was one of the 13 airports in the US that were allowed to accept international flights. I wonder if all 13 airport locations have a higher concentration of cases?

So, with only partial information (i.e. little testing in less dense areas) it's difficult to know 100%. See FL MAP

    https://www.clickorlando.com/news/local/2020/03/22/florida-related-coronavirus-cases-climb-to-830-13-deaths/

FL is kind of weird though as Spring Break impacted our beach areas. And then these same Spring Breakers went home - wherever that may be ... FL also had the Dem. Primary ...

So, IMO these extra activities have impacted the number of cases here in FL. But FL had cases before all this activity as well.

Although most of what I have seen and read that way has been as hard to interpret (in terms of personal and real-world applicability) as a lot of what is posted here, and unfortunately there is quite a bit of "fake news" (to be fair, not always intentional, just accidental) even from otherwise respected news outlets. The difficulty for most readers and viewers is having an adequate knowledge and experience base to separate the wheat from the chaff. Even the CDC's credibility is questionable as the website continued to insist (even through 3/16) that transmission from people with minimal or no symptoms was not important.

Unfortunately, the only realistic advice for most people right now is to do what you are told (often in the form of mandatory government commands). The amount of non-critical, "independent thinking" opinions posted on this and other audiophile (and general interest) websites is astonishing and scary. If you don't have the appropriate knowledge base, experience and access to data to broadcast a worthwhile opinion, you should make that clear.

In retrospect (and it shouldn't be surprising) the data coming from China on this virus and the associated outbreak in China was woefully incomplete, leaving the rest of the world uninformed and unprepared. And like it or not, that was deliberate and political.
