HiFiMan HE-400i & Burson Soloist SL..........

    Hi Guys
Yesterday I bought the HiFiMan HE-400i headphones and the Burson Soloist SL amp. When I got home I immediately set it up and popped a cd in the player(Dark Side Of The Moon). Well let me tell you, I was not prepared for what I heard. Remember these items are brand new with no hours on them at all. At the end of one song in particular(On the run)where you hear the Guy running from left to right, he didn't just run left to right. He ran into my left ear and out my right ear and continued running right out the door. The decay was absolutely amazing.

Let me tell you a little about the phones and amp. The phones are planar magnetic, 35ohm with a 93db sensitivity. They are rather large but the head band construction makes them very comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. They sound phenomenal.

The amp is solid state measuring 3"h x 5.5"w x 8"d. It has a nice heft to it and appears to be very well made(aluminum). The power switch is on the back as well as a selectable voltage switch. It also has an iec power cord. On the front you have the standard 1/4" headphone jack, a large volume knob(very smooth). To the right of the volume is two buttons. The top one is for two separate connections connections. The bottom one is for high and low gain. Low gain is 0.18 watts high is 2 watts( the maximum output). This is a nice feature as it gives you better control of the volume.

This is a splendid amp with the ability to drive even the most demanding headphones. The amp and the phones will provide me with many hours of pleasurable listening(especially late night).

I also tried the Audeze LCD-2. They sounded good but were a little cumbersome and heavy on my head, not to mention $500 more than the HiFiMan.

Bob...congrats on the Hifiman HE-400 si and Burson Soloist. The Soloist has had a lot of great reviews and the new Hifiman 400si and 560 phones are getting very good press. Enjoy

What exactly is a Planar Magnetic headphone?
Do they sound that much different to normal headphones?

I got to listen to the new HE-1000 headphones last weekend at a meeting of our local audio club. They were powered by their new EF1000 amp. Best headphones I've ever listened to.

    Thanks to everyone from HiFiman!
