good morning!

my daughter and family moved in, and are using my stereo room for bedroom

I thought to get headphones to use in my room

OK, i have the Oppo CD player, and it seems to have a headphone amp.

today's dumb questions:

1. can I get some decent headphones like Audeze LCD 2? etc? will the amp drive them? I do not know about impedance, etc.

2. do open back phones give a much better soundstage? I love the soundstage from my stereo, very noticeable.do they "leak" a LOT of sound, or just a little?

3. which headphones do you suggest?

thanks so much!

I used to own an Oppo 105D and on occasion I would connect an old (inexpensive) Grado headphone to it. The Oppo and the headphone worked fine for me.

However, since you seem to be looking for higher-end headphones and have questions about impedance, etc. perhaps it may be useful to you to read the following article about headphones.

Archimago's Musings: MEASUREMENTS / MUSINGS: Headphone impedance, sensitivity, efficiency, and amplifier output impedance. (And a quick thought on Darko's "All You Need Is...")

Good luck!

1. can I get some decent headphones like Audeze LCD 2? etc? will the amp drive them? I do not know about impedance, etc.

In general, lower impedance (e.g. ~20ohm) headphones are easier for "simpler" headphone amplifiers to drive than higher impedance (~e.g. 200ohm) headphones. The OPPO BDP-105D specifications include power output values for headphone impedances up to 600ohm, so I would assume it can drive the 70ohm LCD-2 headphones fine without the sound falling apart and at reasonable volume levels.

2. do open back phones give a much better soundstage? I love the soundstage from my stereo, very noticeable.do they "leak" a LOT of sound, or just a little?

Open back headphones sound better than closed back, but they do leak a lot of sound especially if the listener is not listening at lower (safer for long periods) volumes. If this is going to be a shared space then closed back is going to be nicer for both the listener and the other people sitting nearby. But if you're in two different rooms and people are being considerate of each other then open back is probably fine.

THANK YOU GUYS!! very helpful!

I did find the output of the opposite headphone amp, and I can go from there.

Nicole- THANKS for the great article! helped me understand what impedance is, and the importance of possibly getting a headphone amp.

have a great day guys!
