Why no one has ever measured the speed of light

Yeah, I know, the speed of light is a "known constant", blah, blah, blah... We take things for granted as if science always has all the answers. But no one has actually ever measured the speed of light!

Sorry. Who said no one has measured speed of light before?

Only after 1983, physicists has redefined the metre in SI as the distance travelled by light in vacuum in 1 / 299792458 of a second. And after that, speed of light is an exact number. Before 1983, speed of light is a measured physical constant.

Of course the fundamentals of relativity also say that: "According to relativity, time stands still at the speed of light. Moving at that speed, the second hand on the clock would not have advanced, in the least. ... No time passes on the clock, traveling at uniform light speed, which means that no time passes during a photon's journey, either."

So if speed is DISTANCE over TIME and at the speed of light, time stands still.... that in itself is a bit of a problem...

Also, always allow room for changes and improvements in scientific terms/definitions/concepts as they are bound to change over time as well.

Speed of light may not be a constant after all.... Is is TIME to rewrite the physics textbooks? "The speed of light is constant, or so textbooks say. But some scientists are exploring the possibility that this cosmic speed limit changes, a consequence of the nature of the vacuum of space."

With this video I confirmed my suspicions that, in audio

    - we need better science and better instruments to measure the differences that our ears already catch;
    - this opens an explanation for the directionality of the cables and even for the difference between a coil cable and a stretched one!

    Ah!

Not really. We just need to understand the quantum like computer that is our brain a bit better. Way too many discrepancies and the hearing acuity as well as processing evidently greatly varies from person to person based on many different aspects of physiology. The fact that our memory is not that great at remembering the sounds as much as we like to believe in it as audiophiles, also doesn't help. We only remember 2-4 seconds worth of a tone... Not to mention a complex, multi-instrumental sound.

On a separate note, yes, on a quantum level, where the subatomic particles that our reality is based on, including ourselves, those brains and ears of ours, as well as even the electronics and transducers as well as everything that connects them together... well, those subatomic particles are actually blipping in and out of existence. Given that fact, anything is possible from how we perceive the reality and what we hear, see, remember, etc... it's all just electric impulses in our brains after all. Not to mention the all kinds of funky quantum level stuff going on with the electrons and their interaction with various components and their atomic/subatomic structure.

But how do we trust measurement instruments if they don't use an after market power cord for crying out loud!

So is that why when they are traveling at say, warp 9 when they get to where they are going everyone is still the same age? Isn't Warp 9, like 9 time's the speed of light? Or is it that Warp time travel, warp space continuum? 😏

Re: Why no one has ever measured the speed of light

Beyond my pay grade, but the standard approach would be to assume the one way speed of light is different from the return speed of light and see whether that leads to a contradiction in some observed phenomenon. For example if the of the speed of light is different in different directions, would that mean that there should be an asymmetry in the observed distances of galaxies as determined by their redshifts? One could set a maximum limit to the difference in the speed of light in different directions by determining how uniform the observations are across the sky.

Well, first, a light year isn’t a measure of speed, it’s a measure of distance.

I suppose it’s worth mentioning, second, that warp speed isn’t a real thing. It’s a speed scale taken from fiction (primarily Star Trek) and has no actual scientific basis.

The warp scale in Star Trek has changed a bit over the years, primarily starting with TNG.

In the original scale, the speed was basically w3c
, where w is the warp factor and c is the speed of light. Warp 1 is the speed of light, warp 2 is eight times the speed of light, and so on. The new system is similar, though it increases slightly faster, and between warp 9 and warp 10, the speed goes to infinity (with warp 10 being theoretically unreachable—so naturally, there are episodes where they somehow manage to go faster than that).

@Brian, lol yeah I was basically joking about the warp 9 thing. In reality humans will never be able to travel that fast and survive or even get close to anything conceivable of warp speed or light travel speed. If you have seen that movie Passengers, they are supposed to be traveling half the speed of light whatever that may mean.

At times when riding with my wife while she is driving I feel like she's at warp speed.

My mother in law's gaze travels faster than the speed of light and yes, this has been verified many times.

Re: Why no one has ever measured the speed of light

I have been watching a series by Mike Adams called Oblivion Agenda and he gets into a bit about the speed of light not being a constant. Not a drastic change but still not a constant.
