    Shipping Advice

I am buying a pair of tube mono blocks and need to get them from NY to IL safely. Any recommendations? Thanks.

I think I've had issues with all the major shippers. Lately I've been using FedEx with great success, but please pack very, very well.

Thanks Joe. These weigh 120 pounds apiece in the box. I sense it’s too big of a job for Fedex.

    Re: Shipping Advice

Fedex and UPS's weight limits are both 150 lbs for reg ground service, you should be ok. Insurance is a no-brainer, but if the seller isn't using factory packing and you paid by wire, cash, check etc. you might be SOL if the sender took shortcuts packing them and the amps arrived damaged. Ask me how i know.

    Freight.

UPS and Fedex have weight limits of 150 pounds, but here’s the issue:

Drivers are hired to lift up to 75 pounds. Anything over this and you risk them kicking it off the back of the truck.

    Strap to pallet. Use freight.

    Mike,
That is good advice. Any freight companies you recommend other than UPS or Fedex freight (who tend to be the most expensive whenever I have enquired).
    Thanks,

I called one place and they wanted $1,000 which seemed excessive. Does anyone have a good contact for Pilot?

Thanks Dave. I just submitted a request for a quote online with Pilot. I hear they do a nice job but it’s impossible to get through to them on their 800 number. Based on recent experience, they also weren’t great at responding to online inquiries. I’ll call the local office tomorrow based on the number you provided.

    +1 Freight.

You can try Freightquote for some rough estimates. Just be prepared for someone at Freightquote to reach out to you by phone as a followup.

    Re: Shipping Advice

Yep agree with Mike, use freight.

And regarding the other shippers like FedEx or UPS for the lighter stuff, let them pack as its easier to win a claim if they pack the stuff. I got this advice from a UPS Regional Manager.

    Re: Shipping Advice

I’ve had some customers use uship.com with good success. I haven’t personally used it as we have several corporate accounts with SAIA, Pilot and others.

We buy pallets (oh, by the way, if you buy 10 plastic pallets, they come....wait for it....strapped to a wood pallet! LOL), we have straps, shrink wrap, etc. We don’t mess about.

These guys have moved at least 50 Pinball machines for me in the past few years. Never an incident and many have gone 3000 miles away. They will wrap everything at your house. Don't forget the supplies and tools you'll need to strap boxes to the pallet, like strapping, a tensioner, and seals+sealer.

    Re: Shipping Advice

I’m paying the freight company for a pallet and strapping the items to the pallet. Maybe that’s why it’s around $1,000 from rural NY to Chicago? I didn’t want to impose on the private seller to put it on a pallet himself. Using Airgroup per Miches’ and others’ recommendations.

I agree with most of the above posts.

Another freight line that I have had consistent success with is Old Dominion Freight.

Also have used UPS LTL with 100% success.

    Re: Shipping Advice

For any large items do you have a friend with a trailer or pickup truck. If not consider renting one for a few hours. Go to who ever the shipper is and pick them up, even if it is one at a time. You will need to deal with moving them once they arrive at your property anyway and you will be able to get them closer to your entrance. Some drivers are very helpful others won't do anything.

I have always used FedEx after a UPS driver actually pushed 2 subwoofers off into our gravel driveway and drove away.

Freightcenter takes minutes to join then all you do is type the shipping info and they show you the prices of every freight shipping service available. They offer insurance, personal assistance, residental lift gate option, etc. Look them up.
