    Re: Economy and Finance Thread

A bit of a detour while on the AI topic...

While there are articles that claim there will be new jobs created with AI and automation (of course there will be but one needs to understand that AI and robotics were not invented to hire more people but just the opposite... ) the outlook remains grim for people not ready to retrain and adapt as well as get an education that will be useful going forward in another decade.

McKinsey Global Institute: between 40 million and 160 million women worldwide may need to transition between occupations by 2030, often into higher-skilled roles. Clerical work, done by secretaries, schedulers and bookkeepers, is an area especially susceptible to automation, and 72% of those jobs in advanced economies are held by women.

Oxford Economics: up to 20 million manufacturing jobs worldwide will be lost to robots by 2030.

McKinsey Global Institute: at the high end of the displacement by automation spectrum are 512 US counties, home to 20.3 million people, where more than 25% of workers could be displaced. The vast majority (429 counties) are rural areas in the Americana and distressed Americana segments. In contrast, urban areas with more diversified economies and workers with higher educational attainment, such as Washington, DC, and Durham, NC, might feel somewhat less severe effects from automation; just over 20% of their workforces are likely to be displaced.

Boston Consulting Group: 67% of Chinese executives and 50% of US executives expect a reduction in the number of employees over the next 5 years due to advanced robotics (global survey of more than 1,300 executives and operations managers).

ZipRecruiter: One in five job seekers (one in three for those between the ages of 18 and 22) fear they will one day lose their job to AI (survey of more than 11,000 job seekers in the US).

Listening to the technological/forefront leaders and the brains behind AI and their visions of a society where people will have more free time for spiritual and fulfilling lives that are focused more on helping others as well as focusing more on enriching oneself.. I can't help to think of one question... Who the hell is going to pay for the masses to live these fulfilling and spiritual lives instead of working? How does that economy work???

So far, most people remain unaware of the full impact the current shipping crisis will have on higher prices for consumer goods.

The global shipping industry is facing the worst crisis in the history of container freight - and a massive wave of disruptions is ahead. According to the big boss of a major logistics business, Rob Lewis, the operations director of Meachers Global Logistics, a "perfect storm" is leaving global supply chains in total chaos as freight rates just skyrocketed to the highest level ever recorded.

As a result, it's getting incredibly difficult - and expensive - for stores to restock their shelves, while manufacturers, carmakers, and builders can't get the parts they need, and farmers - particularly small farmers and ranchers across the U.S. - simply cannot afford to export their products anymore. All of these reasons, analysts say, are contributing to a huge jump in consumer prices.

Inflation is certainly pointing its face. ...Food, entertainment, gasoline, electricity, cosmetics, shoes, ...
Look @ the price of food around ... Cuba for example.
Look @ the price of homes around ... Toronto, Vancouver for example.
Look @ the price of timber around ... everywhere.

"Have you already started feeling the impacts of living in a country with double-digit inflation? Just yesterday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released an update indicating that the consumer price index had soared to 5.4 percent over the past year, and such a high rate alarmed a lot of people. However, those people will be shocked to find out that the way inflation is calculated has been changed dozens of times over the past several decades, and if the rate was still calculated the way it was back in 1990, the official inflation rate would currently be about 9 percent."

How much more is going to cost now for a decent pair of loudspeakers, and a pair of mono amps ... 9%, 18%, 33% more? What about a brand new 2023 Lamborghini? Are we going to pay more taxes on our properties, our lands, our homes, our water bills, our electricity, our solar panels, batteries, gas, oil, air conditioning, fire insurance, cell phone service and Internet providers, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple products, Windows 11, cameras, wheels, motyorcycles, yachts, movie tickets, TV cable, Music download, Disneyland?

Are they going to tax the poor more? Are they going to charge dead people?
I think there's a small lack of common sense balance in this world we live in (that is for people who can still breathe some air). Maybe, just maybe, someone somewhere's in charge?

    Re: Economy and Finance Thread

    Economy

"Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell also said part of the temporary boost in inflation is due to “the sharp pandemic-related price declines from last spring drop[ping] out of the 12-month calculation”. In other words, comparing the low prices at the height of the pandemic in the US to today’s increased demand is making the inflation problem look worse than it is.

But investors haven’t been fully assuaged by Powell’s ongoing request for patience in the recent past. Wall Street closed lower Tuesday even as big corporations and banks reported high third-quarter earnings. The fear is that even higher profits won’t insulate major firms from inflation fallout.

Those fears aren’t unfounded. Consumer prices soared 0.9 percent last month after rising 0.6 percent in May, the US Department of Labor said, the sharpest one-month change since June 2008, when the US was mired in the Great Recession of 2007-2009.

Producer price increases are breaking records too, spurring concerns that businesses could pass even higher prices on to consumers in July. Producer Price Index data released on Wednesday ahead of Powell’s testimony showed that the prices businesses fetch for goods and services increased 1.0 percent in June after rising 0.8 percent in May, according to the Department of Labor."

Agree we just had our kitchen cabinets upgraded. When we completed the contract back in Dec 2020, the wood actually real oak was $5656.00 less, but at completion that same wood priced was just nuts. This Fake economy is going to bust one of these days. People paying outrageous prices for new home construction, re-sales and remodels. Those same homes when this thing burst is going to impact a lot of people when their home value drops a few $100 k or more. ( in my area ) .

Key word for a bunch: "artificial". Soon or later reality will strike; it already had in many counties and countries...Cuba, South Africa, South America, ...
With a Corona pandemic and a Delta variant and a booster vaccine and all the jazz going on (jobs, water, food, power, gasoline, consumer goods)... who is a professional economist today?

Yes the real estate house market is ridiculous, a huge bubble, a disaster for young families needing a roof above their heads. When will it end? And how many will benefit and how many will suffer? For the rich no problemo, for the poor* (most of us) not a rosy picture.

You just mentioned a big point; water. It's a problem. And the cost of getting it, and the cost of fighting fires, and the cost of replacing burned homes and forests, and the cost of rebuilding when the materials are three times the price they used to be. Also, electrical grids, air conditioning, food delivery and supply, plus freezers that cannot cope with the heat. Some grocery stores have to shut down because of the heat. This weekend coming another heat wave is forecast for the Rockies across Canada and USA. All this affects the economy, people have to evacuate, tourism economy suffers, lungs and hearts suffer...fragile people suffer. I'm fragile, and a whole bunch of us.

California, Oregon, Cuba, Haïti, South Africa, ... what do they have in common?
South Africa right now is a not a rosy picture, and neither all the fires on the US west coast.
All of this points out to a less than stellar future economy, to ... inflation.

Anyway, for the ones making well over six digits a year there's nothing to worry about; enjoy the swimming pool on the yacht and the sound system in the lounge.

On the gulf Islands near me tourists are advised to bring their own water.
The Islands here rely on rain water for drinking tap water. Where's the rain? Not in the sky right now. How come they don't use desalination of the ocean water, here? You guys in Florida got the the nuts and bolts working right. In Canada we're behind...the gulf Islands on the west coast (my neck of the woods), where jazz rains more than wet water from above. It's no more like it used to be.

Desalination Is Booming as Cities Run out of Water
In California alone there are 11 desalination plants, with 10 more proposed. But there are big downsides to making seawater drinkable.

'Shrinkflation' ... tactical economy? Lol ... Like it says; most likely transitional (for a while, couple years plus, decade or two so). Lol ... Who cares, certainly not Jeff Bezos or Sundar Pichai or Mark Elliot Zuckerberg or Jack Dorsey or Bill Gates or Tim Cook or Elon Musk or Warren Buffett or Bernard Arnault or Charlie Munger or Astrid Menks or anyone else from that branch.

It’s not just inflation, the COVID-19 pandemic is also feeding ‘shrinkflation’ - National | Globalnews.ca

    * Water; it's in short supply in many countries, and in other countries there's just too much of it (Germany).

Now that explains. I didn't know.
    He's into apples ... a rotten one.

    * All those heat waves and forest fires on the west coast; that couldn't be good for water (major droughts) and the economy. On the other hand (across the water) Europe (Germany) got plenty of rain, way way too much...just the opposite. I feel for the people who can't escape water (you can escape fire).
All of this is a hard blow to the economies and the lost of human lives...very tragic and sad on all aspects.

Can we predict in the future and act accordingly to prevent, or to diminish @ least to a very strict minimum? What is needed; more money, better awareness and preparedness, smart planning, ...?

The major problem is, you can't control mother nature. I don't care where you live or what type of preparations you take, not everyone or their property will make it through a major event event brought to you by mother nature. .

Of course not; we just have to go with the flow.
But we can learn from it and do our best. That's all there is, it's life.
History and science are good tools. Where we build and how can help; near forests, near the ocean, near tornado alleys, etc.

The ten hottest years on the planet where from 2005 up to now...in the last sixteen years. We can use that as a future gauge. And it's good for the economy.

As was said earlier you aren't going to control Mother Nature.

26 Million years Antarctica was a rain forest.

The Petrified forest in Arizona was previously part of Central America.

We need not be carless but, we have very little control over what the world is going to do.

Meanwhile on the stock markets ... DJIA: 35K first time ever. The US economy is doing just great.

    Index / Last / Chng. / % Chng.
    DJIA: 35,062 / +238.20 / +0.68%
    NASDAQ: 14,837 / +152.39 / +1.04%
    S&P 500: 4,412 / +44.31 / +1.01%

    * I just don't know the exact percentage of man's influence on the stock markets.
...Same for droughts, for water (not enough/too much), for CO2, for temperature's changes; I know less than zero...I just go with the flow, and the expert scientists on the economy, financiel futures...all that heat and Jazz.

Little control? How about 2,400 gigatons of man-made global CO2 emissions since 1850 at a current rate of 50 gigatons/year, not to mention methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone among others. Please, let's not be careless!

Humans are certainly a part of the ecosystem...Apple, Android, Microsoft, Google, Alexa, Twitter, High-end Audio, Ice, Tubes, OLED TVs, 4K, 8K, stock markets, financial capitals, ozone layer, pollution, air, water, wind, earth, solar power, nuclear fusion, minerals, plastics, petrol, forests, smoke, chimneys, fire, deluge, carbon fiber, high-speed internet, pension funds, bank savings, credit cards, investments, debts, real estate, ... everything we do has an impact on our surroundings and health...mental and physical.

You got that right; we are a careless bunch.
We fly to space while below on earth's surface children are dying of starvation, droughts, lack of resources and medicines, lack of food and water.
We spend trillions on the Galaxy and the stock markets, while our economy is bubbling up in a hot tub of red lava, suffocating our oxygen from our lungs.
We build high up in the sky...one kilometer plus in search of cleaner air.

Our economy is doing fine; that's all it counts. Poverty is tougher to cope with and luxury excesses are dysfunctional to a balanced economy. That creates protests, violence, unhealthy inequities. It's the law of the jungle, the lion's law, the banking of the strong, powerful, rich with raw/martial impunity.

The DJIA is doing fine, the billionaires are flying in space along with a red Tesla Roadster orbiting. We can buy all the vaccines of the world and nothing can stop us. We are invincible, it's inevitable.

Which countries are the three biggest polluters of planet Earth?
And what are they doing about it; spreading it even further? 🤔

We are who we are, it's what it is. 😏
