Steely Dan; I surrender
Nice article in The Atlantic
Surrender to Steely Dan - The Atlantic
I think I will get this book and start going down the Steely Dan rabbit hole.
If these guys had been making music in the 50's and 60's, would they have been the Miles Davis/John Coltrane of the era? If the 1700's, would they have been the great classical composers?Buckeye Farmboy translocated to Boulder. Master and slave to my 10 year old twins

Re: Steely Dan; I surrender
If they were in the 70's would they have been the Led Zeppelin or Who of that decade?
They aren't that high on my list. I do like some of their material. If you have none, Aja is a good start.Aurender ACS10 w/Audioquest Diamond USB, Esoteric N05xd

Re: Steely Dan; I surrender
They were awesome and their music is timeless. Saw them at a small theater in Milwaukee (Pabst?) around 10 years ago. Can’t Buy a Thrill was a great debut and through much of the ‘70’s they made great music from Countdown to Ecstasy to Katy Lied to Aja to Gaucho. Are you with me Dr. Wu?

Re: Steely Dan; I surrender
Usually well recorded and multi layered. I could do without the vocals on most tracks.

Re: Steely Dan; I surrender
exactly and Aja( I assume their all time selling Lp) was a 70's release. I still have my original with the cello jacket and the 'alpha' stamp indicating what price category it fell into , purchased from EJ Korvette. Anyone remember that Dept store ?
And how can one forget how they came upon their name Steely Dan !Cheers ! …. Dave

Re: Steely Dan; I surrender
I had a friend who was a disc jockey at a popular FM station. A friend and I stopped by one evening and he played a couple cuts off Can't Buy a Thrill which was their new first album. I liked it. I was disappointed in their second album due to the singing personal change. I eventually came around. Their strengths were writing/arranging. Also their demands for masterful performances. They were a big divergence from the majority of guitar driven popular music of the period. I still dig out a disc of their music from time to time.

[QUOTE=Mr Peabody;360425]Please, I know my music, what I said was intended as a joke on the comments of the OP[/QUOT
Cool, but if you would have replied to the actual post and it was quoted I would have known it was a JOKE. But I get it.2chl : Vincent Sp331MkII, W4S STP-SE Stage 2, Kef 201/2, KEF 140, Vapor Breeze, Lumin, Bryston CD, BHA-1, Quicksilver Headamp, HD650, HD800s, HD820's, Dan Clark 1.1, Focal Stellia, OPPO 203, 105.
