Is someone still using compact discs
Yesterday I got a new cd player.
Hope to buy alot of cd's. Nowadays they are everywhere at second hand shops and no one seems to care anymore. Today I aqcuired 5 cd's 1 from barbara streisand, 2 celine dion and 2 katie melua, alltogether for the price of a loaf of bread. 25 years ago I paid 18 euro for these, each.
I think I will turn more cd's, and the feeling of having instead of internet play has also something extra. Really looking forward in old fashioned buying discs from everywhere.
Am I the only one and are cd's really dead?

Re: Is someone still using compact discs
You are not the only one,...
The only playback means I use: any Redbook CD format (CD, SHM-CD, Bluespec2, various XRCD formats including XRCD, K2HD, XRCD2, XRCD24, SHM XRCD), many SACDs, and a few HDCD (played back as RBCD).
New production of all these formats is going strong...

Re: Is someone still using compact discs
What I miss is the seeking and buying. And those shop owners helped me with really nice stuff. A little bit talking, and sometimes listening to those headphones in the store. They helped me with really fine recordings.
And now with my new player, I came across that cd's sound so well, think it is a little bit better then my streaming stuff and like to start buying again. Luckily in my neighbourhood there are still 2 nice cd stores left.

Re: Is someone still using compact discs
I understand as I miss the heyday of the music store very much for LPs, discs, etc. lots of great memories.
You can thank the internet in general, Jeff Bezos (Amazon), Ebay, etc...
On the positive side, the number of ways to buy discs and research music online is staggering and far beyond what a local shop could provide sans the great ones (Tower Records and several others...)
Today, Amazon, Ebay, Discogs, ImportCDs.com, CDJapan, Tower Records Japan, individual websites for various classical, jazz and other labels/other genres and sites like the Berlin Philharmonic and many others world wide will help you empty your wallet to your heart's desire and beyond.
You can believe me on this

Re: Is someone still using compact discs
I owned two CD players. One I kept for ripping SACDs. But then came high-def streaming and found no use for it anymore.
In my system, physical CDs and (CD-quality) streaming sound the same, so while I no longer listen to CDs, I still keep one CD player handy just in case!

Re: Is someone still using compact discs
I like to have SOME Cd's around for when the wifi isn't working at home, long road trips through the mountains when I know there's going to be spotty-at-best radio reception, titles that aren't included in (or suddenly disappear from) my streaming service, etc.
A big consideration is whether or not someone wants to hear the same thing multiple times, or would they rather be discovering new music most of the time. On cost, streaming wins hands down. No way I can afford to buy everything I am curious about, and also no way I want to keep hearing the same thing over and over, regardless of format.

Re: Is someone still using compact discs
I think I have purchased two discs over the past three years. I have tossed many more than that as I don't like clutter. I need to once again go through Roon to see which burned discs aren't getting any plays and delete more of those and get rid of the associated discs. I am more than happy to use Tidal to play a disc I may not have . Should I desire to play one in the future and by chance its not available, I'll just play another title.

Re: Is someone still using compact discs
About sound quality, cd sounds so amazingly well. I invested in a player that is now the most expensive part of my set, and it outplays my streaming system, so much depth and details. It has a philips laser and a philips running gear which are the best made and out of production for a long time. The table on which the cd is loaded is decoupled from the ground, which prevents any vibrations.
SQ is even slightly better then my streaming stuff. Starting to love turning cd’s again, 💿

I own two CDTs and a seldom used Oppo 103. In the past couple years, I've bought anywhere from 3 to 15 CDs at a time, and 25 to 40 per year. That's not a huge number, but I also stream a lot as well.

Re: Is someone still using compact discs
I have been collecting CDs and old vinyl for free from my local dump (exchange zone) and at the Charity shop, CDs are $1 each and vinyl from 2-4 bucks. Similar at flea markets. I managed to score like 150 classical CDs in one drop early one and would say that I got about 300 free Cds and maybe 150 vinyl for free? I bought CD brief cases and even got some free from the Dump exchange zone. I strip out the CDs and leaflets from the jewel boxes, so have about 8 CD briefcases almost full. They hold from 100 CDs to 250 CDs each. I only strip regular CDs, not double CDs or CDs in special cardboard or commemorative cases. Jazz and Classical are the biggest genres I have. Lots of fancy labels too, like Decca, Telarc, teldec, Verve, ECM, ACT, Stockfisch, and a few MA recordings too. I am quite happy with this.

Re: Is someone still using compact discs
I have many of these too, including UHQCD. I use a modded Denon universal player that has all the extra functions ripped out and CD signal tapped at source leading directly to a new Spdif output (no output transformer to degrade the signal). Luckily the HDCD function remains intact. I play SACD with my Onkyo Sacd player which uses discrete components.

Re: Is someone still using compact discs
You can easily rip your cd's to that roon nucleus. Hook an internal or external SSD to your nucleus, format it with Roon. After that hook an external USB cd-player on the nucleus and Roon starts ripping the cd automaticaly. Then those cd's are playable in Roon, even when it is not in the Tidal/Qobuz database.

Re: Is someone still using compact discs
I tend to prefer CD to streaming or file playback because of sound quality. In my case I have a fairly decent CDT/DAC combo (Esoteric P-02X/D-02x) and my music server is clearly not on the same level (Aurender N100H). Still it’s not bad when playing files off of the drive but streaming definitely isn’t quite as good. With that in mind I’m going to audition an N20 and N30SA in the next few months at home and see if either of those can close the gap with my Esoteric transport. Should be fun!
