    Resurrecting a Dinosuar

What a great forum! I love stereo equipment and due to circumstances took a 5 year hiatus from my stereo. I moved and had it stored in my shop with the rest of my household goods while my new house is being built. Then the bug bit again and hard. I got most of it set up in the shop and decided to add to it. The 4th power amp and mid bass speakers came along with the graphic equalizer. Also the 2 racks were set up the way they should be. Then the troubleshooting began 5 months ago.

Cut outs and a dead left channel. I finally found why the left channel did'nt work ... a brand new Monoprice cable with a dead side. I then replaced every cable with Belden cables and connectors. There were still intermittent cut outs and and dead areas. I narrowed it down to the 5 processors on the processor circuit and even used my spare pre-amp to check. I switched the processor circuit to the tape loop and still the same. I then isolated every one of the 5 processors and this took 3 months because the problem was intermittent. Finally I narrowed it down to the dbx 120 subharmonic synthisizer and the dbx 1bx range expander. OK I put the 2 spares in and still had the same problem! How do you troubleshoot when you have 2 intermittent components and the 2 spares are also intermittent? Thats why it took me so long.

I have been listening for about a month now with no problems and no dbx. Everything is perfect. I can't wait to get the sub-woofers hooked up but they are buried in household goods. There was also a problem with a 60hz hum but re-routing power cables away from audio cables solved that, Next up is new Belden speaker cables to ensure no 60hz interference.

I hope this post may help with your troubleshooting and did not bore you to death.

Does adding to your stereo/improvements ever end? Probably no but it sure is fun!

Welcome! In looking at your system brings back good memories. I used to own a full rack of SAE gear in the 1980s.

Glad you found your problems. It sounds like a complex system. I had a tri amped setup back in the 1970's and know the time it takes to isolate a bad cable or component.
Main System: Analog - Linn LP12, Origin Live DC motor and Controller, SME V arm, Benz Ruby H 2 cartridge, Wright Sound preamp. Digital - Intel NUC I-7, 16 gig ram, Jriver media center 24, Wyrd4 Sound 2V2 SE Dac, Fathom Hard Drives.
H-Cat Version 9 preamp, ARC Reference 75 amp, Custom line source speakers - 10 SB Acoustics midwoofers, 10 Fountek ribbon tweeters. JL Audio Fathom f112 Subs
Wire - T G Audio, Shunyata, Synergistic Research , Audioquest, Lewis silver foil, Duelund, Transparent.

This system is complex and kind of just grew and grew. I wouldn't trade it for anything. My heart and soul has been in this system since 1979. Almost there! It took me 4 decades but it is worth waiting for. I learned a lot on this forum which made the resurection go much faster and thanks for all of your help.
