Apparently the police have not released the name of the individual who passed away but his publicist has confirmed it.

    Absolutely.

I'm jolted. I'm two years younger than Prince and I remember when his first album came out and hit our high school by storm. I took summer classes in Madison in '84 when Purple Rain came out. One of my classmates went to high school with Prince and told us he was a really good basketball player. Years later, Dave Chapelle did a hilarious skit about playing a pick up basketball game with him.

    Re: Prince has Died

I heard an interview with the curator of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, where he said that this performance from 2004 in a tribute to George Harrison was arguably the greatest guitar solo in history. Prince comes on stage at ~3:25 in and it’s pretty unbelievable. Well worth the few minutes of your time it will take to watch it. May he rest in peace, eternally jamming with other musical legends.

    Re: Prince has Died

    Dearly beloved
    We are gathered here today
To get through this thing called life

    Electric word life
It means forever and that's a mighty long time
But I'm here to tell you
    There's something else
    The after world

A world of never ending happiness
You can always see the sun, day or night

So when you call up that shrink in Beverly Hills
You know the one, Dr. Everything'll Be Alright
Instead of asking him how much of your time is left
Ask him how much of your mind, baby

    'Cause in this life
Things are much harder than in the after world
    In this life
    You're on your own

And if the elevator tries to bring you down
Go crazy, punch a higher floor

If you don't like the world you're living in
    Take a look around you
    At least you got friends

    Re: Prince has Died

Been a big Prince fan since a teenager. All of these albums are like time capsules of what you were doing at some point and the memories come flooding back. Baby I'm a Star used to be one of our going out songs back in the day - it was so uplifting and always put us in a good mood before we went out on the town.

You really don't fully appreciate people until they are gone. Very Sad and RIP Prince.

I am celebrating Prince's life by playing all his albums in chronological order over the next few days.

An unnecessary and highly insensitive comment as I find, given that someone has just passed away. But that's just me.

Also, given this is an audiophile forum, a quite surprising statement displaying a lack of understanding for the artists contributions to his musical genre and the record industry and his place in music history.

Besides his musical genius Prince was the only artist ever making it to the board of a big five record label, based on the albums he would be making in the future, only to pick a fight with the same later on to free himself from the restrictions of the agreement. Marketing-wise also quite a stunt to change your brand mid-career, teaching Sean Combs the tricks. And, while a musician, he also got an Oscar for the Purple Rain score.

And all of this has nothing to do with whether someone Iikes the music or not. So, well, why the accolades.

Prince has A LOT of unpublished works in his vault. There are questions about his substantial estate and inheritance which will eventually get sorted out.

I believe that there will be a Prince revival through his unpublished recordings and songwriting.

Kuoppis - Because he found a way to make lots of money doesn't make him a genius. I have no contempt for him. I wish i had been fortunate enough to make that kind of money. He taught himself piano and guitar, hired others to make the real music while he fronted the band. He left no legacy. Beethoven was a genius, he was not. I see you've put together a high priced rig.... I suspect you too have found a way.

    Re: Prince has Died

Not sure why questioning the accolades people have for Prince is necessary on this thread. He has died and many, including myself, think highly of his musical contribution. I appreciate that not everyone may share this opinion but on a thread about the sudden death of a popular musician, sure seems a little crass and insensitive.

    Partly agreed.

On the one hand I do concur, that making money does not equal to a genius.

On the other hand it is quite obvious, that it requires a certain capacity to judge whether anyone is a genius or not.

On a side note, I'm afraid this is a forum for grown ups. So why don't you go play with the other brats in your own age group, then you do not have to envy anyone else's rig. Having a nice setup is kind of the norm here, mine is really nothing special compared to several people on this distribution. But maybe another difference between us is just that you wish and I do.

Back to the topic, if I may suggest.

Tunes....I disagree. My postings are under General Audio Discussion. This place exists to banter around ideas...a discussion of all things musical. Perhaps you object to discussing Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Willie Nelson, Mozart, Guillaum de Marchaut.....and the list goes on........

What I however do recognize, is that you stubbornly continue to insert yourself into a thread where you obviously do not add any value and hence, based also on a couple of posts other than mine, do not appear too much appreciated. What puzzles me, is what might be your point? You do not like Prince, others do. Well, thank you for sharing. Can we move on now?

Also, I guess if you had a Ph.D. you would know how to spell it.

Prince had game period. Even if you didn't prefer his stuff you must recognize reality. And if you can't, not the time, just not the time.

    Prince has Died

Prince had game and a number of great songs. Which ones are your all-time favorites?

I go first, difficult to determine an order of preference:
    - little red corvette
    - raspberry beret
    - purple rain
    - kiss
    - 1999
    - peach
    - sexy m.f.

These come to mind out of the top of my head, there are many more.

The point I am trying to make to all out there is that it is important to use your brain where thought is born, not your gut where waste is impacted. You are just buggying down the road with no meaning to your actions. Clearly no one has anything of any importance to tell me WHY Prince is revered. With that its adiu....(a PhD is a doctor of Philosophy....I worked very hard on that degree...used my brain)

..just on an "Audiophile" note.....Cardas was the very worst cable that I inserted in my system with all my Ayre stuff...I know Ayre recommends Cardas...but not good for me.

You clearly are clueless as far as Prince goes, let alone your total lack of respect and class in a RIP thread.

His father actually taught him to play piano and music in general as he was a professional jazz musician. Yes he taught himself to play every other instrument that one would normally have in a band or studio environment.

You act as if his success was some lucky break and you seem resentful that you have not been as lucky? You are correct in one point, he did find a way to make money - write fantastic music that is appreciated by millions of people around the world.

He has had 39 albums in a recording career of 38 years. I have been listening to Pince and enjoying his music for 35 years. The majority of his albums have been written by, played by and produced by Prince. He has generally brought in unknown musicians for the times he set up a band and written songs for them as well, not studio musos. You do realise that to play live you need to have a band? His music he has in his vault will hopefully be released for the next 20 years as he has that much original unreleased material.

He has written many hit songs for other artists like Sinead O'Çonner, Chaka Khan, Vanity 6, Stevie Nicks, Cindy Lauper, the Bangles, Alicia Keys to name a few.

anyway, too much airtime has been given already to you - back to the music.

Ah ..XV-1.... Indeed!!! I am clueless...that's why I asked the question in the first place.....Why is Prince revered. I know he was taught by his father...that he taught himself piano et al.....that doesn't mean much. He also was a nice guy...he bicycled with the "regular" people in the neighborhood. So what I would like to know if YOU know why Prince is revered. What contribution has he brought to us to make him more worthwhile than I am. I am a pro musician...have been playing in bands for 50 years or so....can ANYONE tell me why Prince is revered.

Not jealous...just trolling for some intellect....there doesn't seem to be any here.

Dr Stringreen...Anyone with a philosophical appreciation will understand that Prince was revered because he was a respected artist, musician, songwriter and performer. People's love for him is measurable in many ways.

His style and interpretation of music was unique. Prince will live on to achieve historical recognition and deserves to be remembered in such an iconic way.

Such artists empower reflection upon their audience. Reflect on that.

I told you, he got game. You feel game with your gut; don't think it with your brain. You should give it a whirl some time.

    Re: Prince has Died

back to the beautiful music Prince has made in his lifetime. Prince's albums generally have not been nice and easy listens - outside of the few commercial songs he seems to be able to effortlessly write on each album, the rest of his albums generally take several listen to get fully into. that is what makes them ultimately so rewarding.
No better than Sign Of the Times. perhaps my fav and every time I play this, even after almost 30 years I appreciate something new.

original German pallas pressing - sounds sublime.

Steve....all I wanted to know was a couple of ways he's granted this reverence that I hear all over. No one can tell me anything of worth. Elvis is worthy of his mark in history because he found a way to successfully marry country/western, and religious music....Frank Sinatra was the greatest exponent of proper phrasing, JS Bach invented our system of music (harmonic and contrapuntal) that all of us musicians use this very day (including Prince), Guillaum de Marchaut wrote the first polyphonic Ordinary of the Mass.....and so it goes. The Beatles were revered in their time, yet high school kids never heard of them today. If one were to give something as valuable as reverence, they should discriminate to whom they give it. Too many walk around with not only their hats, but their heads turned backward.

Dude you should really just knock it off. You may be smarter than all of us, but I fear you are not smart (or existential) enough to understand the answer to your own question. You are really becoming a disrespectful buzz kill for the fans on this thread here for a higher purpose.

They had "Purple Rain" on TV today, never was a fan, but I tried to watch it.

Turned it off after 15 minutes.

    RIP.
