    Re: Pictures of your room

I am really 'bad' in making pictures... but herewith an overview of the room. The sideview from the electronics is the last one I made (somewhere in August last year), but overall it gives a good impression of the room

Your system looks great and you did a better job than me getting a full photo. I only managed thumbnails.

Shane, found that they still prefer some oomph. So far the Koda K70 amps sound the best...

Bob, Sorry to learn about your misfortune with Rives and that you lost financially. I guess they over committed themselves when they purchased that speaker company. But that doesn’t help customers such as yourself. I was lucky I suppose timing wise as their level 2 design worked well for me.

Glad to hear you persevered and found someone else to help with designing your room. It looks great and I bet it helps extract the last bit of performance from your Alexia speakers. I’m always surprised by how well the XLFs perform in my treated room.

I've been without music for nearly 3 months now. My psyche has a dent, I am irritable & too confrontational. For now, I will explore the world of Schiit with OB speakers & WB generators. It's been that long even the cat is listening on the back lawn. When the real bass kicks in she turns her head....

    Thank you Brian!

These ‘big dyns’ require some background info. Even before starting building this dedicated room, I already owned a pair of Dynaudio Confidence C4’s and a pair of Confidence C1’s (both pairs were bought new by me) which were at that time placed in my living room. So for me it was logical to refer to the ‘Confidence Mansion’ when I started building this room as I planned to finally end up with C4’s, C1’s and a Confidence Center for surround (the center on the picture is a Contour S CX). The pillars in the room even have the ‘same’ veneer as the Dynaudio C4’s. As with many of us, sometimes you run into even more exciting audio equipment and for me that was the Von Schweikert VR10-Mk2 speaker system. So also the C4’s moved to the back.

After some experiments for me it was clear the C4’s add so much more (even as rears) over the C1’s that I decided to sell the C1’s and to keep the C4’s. Currently I am ‘thinking’ about what to use as heightspeakers IF I would go to a 4.1.X system, but to be honest do not have a clue yet. For me listening to stereo is by far the most important aspect of our hobby so all compromises that were taken when building this dedicated room (and purchasing audio equipment) are in favor of stereo.

    Best regards, Jan

Thanks. For my listening (classical and jazz), one Luxman m900u is more than adequate for the YG Hailey 1.2's in this 14'x19'x10' area, but the monos seem to supply more headroom and ease -- no problem enjoying orchestral recordings. I found the Soulution 501s boring with the YGs -- sorry I can 't unpack that more for you, it's been a while. I've also used an Absolare (200w/4 ohm) hybrid integrated with these speakers in this room to no ill effect. As the Absolare doesn't come near to doubling from 8 to 4 ohms like the Luxman, I suppose that means the Hailey's aren't too terribly difficult to drive -- albeit limited by room size and preferred decibels, no doubt.

You can always tell when Jim had a hand in setup as the speakers are way out from the front wall! Beautiful room and setup. Well done.

Thanks. I already had them about 6-7 feet from the front wall but Jim pulled them out farther than I ever would have dreamed of -- by anchoring the seating position, of course. Luckily I had the flexibility to reconfigure the room to put the sofa in the best spot for the most even bass response, so we did nothing with the DSP on the basshorns and only boosted their volume by 4-5 dB. But as Jim proved, while distance from the front wall can be helpful, finding the sweet spot for the listening position is the key.

Absolutely. The biggest miss I see most people make in their setups is trying to set up the speakers before they have determined optimal listening position.

Great Pic. Are those B&W 803D3s? How do they sound with Gryphon? is it Diabablo 300?

    Re: Pictures of your room

My apologies I was in a rush yesterday. 802D3 with Gryphon Diablo 300 with Dac. Wireworld Eclipsse 8 silver.

It was a strange journey I started off with the Focal Sopra 2s and a Devialet 220 pro I upgraded the amp because I came to hate Devialet the company. But mostly because I could no longer own something that made my feel disgusted by it.

I know it's stupid but I have always been show me the best and I will show my new favorite. To me being loyal to a company is insane, and when I saw the way people who bought Devialet behaved it made me feel embarrassed.

I really wanted a D'agstino but after talking with Mike I was like OK Diablo 300 is the one.

But little did I know that the devialet had been hiding a little secret you see 2 cones on one of the sopra's died 2 of them. This was obvious on the Diablo at low volumes but, the Devialet seemed to hide it somehow. I blame SAM for this, but I can't prove it so I ordered 2 new drivers and a week later it was fixed

So now I had the amp of my dreams and full functioning speakers, I let the driver burn in for 120 hours and then started testing. After about 4 months of trying some new speaker wire and almost trying some other speaker wire.

I realized the Sopra's where not what I had thought they where. Mike being the great gentleman that he is helped me cure this buy selling me a pair of 802d3s in the prestige finish

The problem with the Sopras was that the bass was so boomy and I had to play them so loud to come alive. I was not buying the 802d3 I was actually going to buy a pair of Kaya 45s.

But a local dealer here in town called me and actually got me into his showroom. He told me he had a pair of 802d3 in prestige, he told me his price would be unbeatable.

So my wife and I arrange a baby sitter and go check it out. When we arrive the first thing we notice is how broken down the 802d3s are. I don't just mean scratched or dirty but the cones moved violently, like they where busted. The amp they was using was a Vitus Sia 025, they told me the specs of the amp was A\B 300 watts just like my Gryphon they said. For the life of me I could not figure out why the speaker was clipping at low levels

After hearing enough, I asked how a demo could be so abused? after 20 minutes of wait let me find something for you. What they where looking for I don't know. I was informed that the brand new demo pair they dragged me to see was actually 3rd hand.

The thing that makes this experience all the more frustrating was that I had informed this dealer that I had already made a deal on a new pair and was just trying to see if I wanted them. There was no need for any of the lies I was always going to buy from Mike, I made that clear and yet somehow they thought they could trick me into buying their garbage.

Later that day I found out the Sia 025 only has 25 watts of A power. When I read that I called Mike and confirmed my purchase.

The biggest improvement I hear is in low level detail, the Sopras had no sound till level 8 on the volume. The 802d3s are audible at 2, the sopras needed to be cranked to 26 to 30 on the volume now its 17 to 25.

No more headaches from unruly bass, the most exciting thing about the new speakers is that the sound now flows through the whole house. What was once, loud and distracting has now become an enjoyable experience throughout the house.

Hi Parker. Would you mind telling me how toed-in your Mezzos are? Do they directly point towards the listener's head or behind it and by roughly how much? There was a time when (if I remember correctly) Jim Smith suggested the direct line from the old Unos and Duos crossed in front of the listener. In fact, I have one of his set-up photos but I didn't take a note of whether this is the left or the right speaker! Thanks. Peter

The speakers are @100" apart center-to-center and the outer front edge of the basshorn is about 3" further from the wall than the inner front edge. Definitely not crossed in front, more like each pointed to respective ear. Jim may have specifically recommended the crossed-in-front toe-in for a room set-up with different problem areas or for a different type of preferred listening. The message from his GBS, repeatedly, seemed to me everything is room dependent, so he always seemed to shy from hard, fast rules. More just suggested starting points. How are yours set up?

The rest of the math -- it's about 134" from an ear to a treble driver (not the outer edge of the horn, but the driver itself), which is about level with the top of the center of the basshorn cabinet.

Hi Parker - Thanks for that. At present I have my Duos pointing directly at the listening position, though I sometimes change to cross a little behind my head or just in front. There are differences, but I'm never unhappy with what I've chosen. After a few months, I change the angle and enjoy this for a while. I'm not convinced there is one option and everything else will give poor results.

I think that if one wants to widen the sweet spot (for 2 or 3 listeners), one has to have the left speaker pointing towards the right listener and vice versa ie serious toe-in. Then the left listener will have the furthest away speaker pointing towards him and the much closer one pointing to his right. But truth is with AGs their sweet spot is best kept small and you selfishly listen on your own, or leave your guests to enjoy slightly inferior sound!

My tweeter horn centres are about 108" apart and I sit about 168" from each tweeter. These distances suit my room rather than necessarily suiting the speakers! I could move the speakers back or forward a foot or so, but they fit in best where they are. I'm sure Jim could get them to sound even better. I use a crossover of 140 Hz (as suggested by AG as a starting point) and set the sub volume a little lower than level, though current amps have more comprehensive controls. Peter
