Music Formats: What's hip and what's not?

Ha- I guess I may have broken some form of forum or internet protocol- but to your credit - I am not a fan of 8 track players, so as soon as I saw It, I rolled my eyes.

That is super cool that you are active in the local music scene and that you like vinyl.

Who ever anointed 'hipsters' as being cool?? They look like a bunch of goofballs and they don't express individuality like hippies from the 1960s did. Hipsters all have the same dress code including their funky glasses and facial hair. They all just seem like sheep in a herd to me, but then, lots of people are sheep waiting to be led somewhere even if somewhere is nowhere.

I've never been a fan of 8-tracks. But a friend of mine was doing a lively business buying and selling them 10 years ago in his record store. He told me that one of the most sought after was Paranoid by Black Sabbath. I'm with mep on this one regarding hipsters. In fact so are hipsters, its very hip to hate on hipsters :)

mep, what's the saying, " Lead. Follow. Or get out of the way!"

They should have called themselves "un-hipsters" because they are anything but hip. As for who gets credit for starting the hipster movement, I have no idea and frankly could give a shit less. From the way they look, they might have been started by a guy who was previously either Amish or Mennonite and decided to rebel and become 'hip.' Either way, the sheep in the hipster flock all look the same to me.

In the case of 8 track tapes, it must be hip to like something that totally sucks. For those of us old enough to remember them and own them when they were new, they were horrible. The tapes would cut off in the middle of a song and switch tracks. Every time the head switched tracks, it would make a clunking noise and more importantly, the head never stayed in alignment. You could always hear music from adjacent tracks bleeding through and the tapes were noisy in addition. These were never a high fidelity medium. Any decent cassette deck blew 8 track decks so far in the weeds 10 search parties and 100 bloodhounds couldn't find them.

The only thing that ever made sense to me about people who collected 8 track tapes after their death (8 tracks that is) were people who owned classic cars that originally came with 8 track tape decks and wanted to retain their originality. For example, a 1970 Chevelle SS originally came with an 8 track tape deck assuming you went for the radio option.

I shall lick that car..

Anyway, I think the 'what's hip' question has a pretty straight forward answer: Vinyl. DSD. Mp3.

The Tascam product looks dated. Isn't the Ayre QA-9 the way to go? I am looking for a premium needle drop solution.

Actually, Tascam units are solid and current. I have their pro CD recorder. There are many things today though along with the Tascam units that will give you what you want I think. I don't know what an Ayre QA-9 does or is, but I'm sure it meets demands.

I agree, no matter what format it is in crap mastering and engineering sounds like crap. Several overpriced re-issues have proven that.

It's not the format. There are several good ones. Vinyl, cd, sacd, xrcd, dsd, dvd, blue ray, among a few others.

What makes the music sound good is the RECORDING and MASTERING--not the medium you listen to.

Thanks Eric. Will take a closer look. I was keen to go Ayre but they don't have honest representation in Australia.
