    LIAR Test

Do you ever take the LIAR test with a new piece of gear?

LIAR = Listen In Any Room

Do you see how your speakers located in your listening room sound when you go into other rooms?

I have all my gear in my living room, which is open to the kitchen and dining area, so I hear it whether I'm sitting down or in the kitchen cooking.

I bring this up because I had my listening room door open as I was waking about the house and I literally stopped in my tracks. I thought Diana Krall was in my house! That has never happened before.

I'm with Mark. The room my gear is in opens to other rooms in my house so I can listen to music from wherever I may be. I don't know what it would be like to have a dedicated music room, and I'm not sure that I would actually like it.

Very true Mike, I got the exact same impression when I eavedrop the music from another room....somehow it sounded better than first front row seat, especially upstairs.

I've had the same many a time as my computer is in the office off the stereo/theatre room. The room is also open to the rest of the house on one side so music floods the whole house. I quite frequently find myself thinking MAN that sounds good & it's around about that stage I go & sit in front of the speakers to listen some.

I have never listened to any of my components in any other room in the house.

They have never been moved more than a few feet from where they stand right now.

    Re: LIAR Test

For all practical purposes I have only one place for my system. And I only have enough room placement flexibility to move my speakers a few inches one direction or the other. I do have a specific listening chair position that doesn't require moving components (especially speakers) more than a couple inches. My listening room is about 27' x 12' and has asymmetrical corners. The other (back) half of the room is a recording studio with some minor acoustic panel room correction. The only other room off my downstairs listening room is a utility (washer and dryer) room.

The front half of the room is actually a pretty good listening area with very good sound quality and what seems to be a well balanced frequency spectrum. The floor is carpet over concrete. Before we lived in the house the former owner installed painted pegboard on the ceiling which has some absorbent capability because of the perforations in the pegboard. However, the pegboard itself is obviously a hard surface.

It all seems to work well as a listening area. My listening chair forms an equilateral triangle with the speakers. If I were to do any additional room correction I'm not sure what it would need to entail? I think things sound pretty good as they are. The bass seems to be very clean, tight, clear, plentiful, and not muddy at all. I've noticed as I approach 300 hours on my new system the mids and top end are sounding increasingly crystal clear, robust, and rich.

My only other listening room alternative would be our upstairs living room which would likely be much more lively due to hard surfaced (hardwood) floors, walls, and ceiling. I think it would require considerably more correction. And I would likely get less listening done as the upstairs living room is where we watch the most TV.

Anyway, that's my listening area. I kind of lucked out as my rather inflexible room has not required hardly any correction. Not that it can't sound better. But, as I mentioned above, it sounds pretty good as is, IMHO. My 2 cents.

    Re: LIAR Test

My main room is open to a center hall that leads to the kitchen one way, and a large opening then doorway into the kitchen the other way. I can listen from anywhere downstairs as well as upstairs as it travels up the steps.

A long time ago when I setup my first system here, Marantz 67se with an Audio Alchemy DAC into Hafler 945-9180 combo and Mirage 790s, someone was here in the kitchen and commented that my setup sounded great even from the kitchen.

I have 2 other systems in my family room that is also open to the Kitchen so sounds good anywhere also.

And Mike, I thought I saw on Twitter that Dianna was stalking you and may have been in your house

Not likely with Avantarde speakers. Far too directional and much of the treble is lost unless heard from in front.

My AGs are placed in the middle of my living room with my normal listening place in front of the speakers. From my dining and kitchen area the feeling of Diana Kraal or Eva Cassidy being there is lost. My Martin Logans 13A Expressions projected a very similar sound forward and backwards so were much better than the AGs from behind the speakers, but nowhere near as good (even compared with ancient Unos) from in front.

Until I sell my old Duos, I now have back-to-back new Duo XDs facing forward and old Duos facing backwards. I change the cables over depending on where I'm likely the spend the next hour or two!

The experience you describe was most aparent to me when I visited a New Yoerk book store many years ago and was totally convinved a live pianist was playing on the next floor up. Partly as the standard of playing seemed slightly under par and partly as it sounded so convincingly real. It turned out to be a Philip Glass CD being played through rather good speakers although I can't remember the make.

My listening room is on the upper floor of the house. There is a 4' wide hallway that is 24' long. My listening room is at the end on the right side.
There are times, when returning from the kitchen after refilling a drink glass, I am surprised at the quality of sound in front of me as I walk back.

Don’t you lose the stereo effect when you’re listening in a room other than your listening room? Aren’t you listening in mono?

Being that my loft library is the listening room it is easy to hear the system in the living room, dinning room, and kitchen below. Much harder to hear going into the office or master bedroom though... Of course it is just listening, no sense of image, etc.

    Re: LIAR Test

I used to have door knockers come to my house where I probably had the best of 3 systems I've ever owned dialed in & just putting out the bare minimum of acceptable on a bad hearing. They used to stand there & get mesmerized, forgetting what the spiel was. Around about the time they were back into sell mode the door shut firmly...
