Maybe the small amps are the giant killers since most high end power amps are enormously large? Just speculating.

In my room, the 30w of pure and sweet triode power is more than enough to drive the speakers that are appropriate for the room size/volume and my listening levels. There is a right tool for every job.

Of course we live in the land where everything has to be big and excessive, it’s in our culture.

Repeating that amps need lots of overhead, like another 300-500w above and beyond the 4-5w where they are cruising along filling the room with sound, also goes a long way towards leading to “monster amp” envy on forums.

Filling a large room with sound, while recreating near realistic concert levels with speakers that drop to under 2 ohms, well, that really does require serious power, no doubt. Different horses for different courses.

No serge at or below 4 ohm its current thats required and yes 30 watts unless used judiciously is clip city on anything less than 97db /W/M

BTW, do you recall how you compared your amps

I have never seen or heard the Benchmark amp so I cannot comment. My armchair audiophilia is limited to only my listening experiences.

My speakers are tube friendly and do not have dips below 6 ohms. I know what I’m doing.

Yes, I do remember, I’ve had dozens of amps come through my systems and most popular brands of solid state amps sounded more alike than different.

Exactly. I wouldn’t want to ship my Pass X600.5 amps across town, let alone across country.

I love them, but since they cost less than $20K new they are just mid-fi in this thread.

    Re: Jay's Audio Journey

This Friday i will be over at Suncoast audio and i will be filming FROM THERE, my top, middle and bottom tier amplifier groups. Some of these amps are amps that Mike has on the floor and they won’t make the top list. This will be done to show everyone that i can come into a dealer’s showroom and STILL give you all my opinion in front of the dealer himself.
Mike has agreed to let me tell it like it is even if it means that i won’t be praising all his amplifier lines as being the best of the best. This video will be awesome 😎

they really are quite diminutive for SS monoblocks as large heat sinks are built into the chassis. around 50lbs/each.

    http://hifimansion.com/wp-content/up...a2000_2012.pdf

"To those who find it impossible to believe components priced as reasonably as these can possibly be as good as those costing a whole lot more, I say only, “They are. Please
audition with your mind as open as your ears.” If I were closing up shop tomorrow as a reviewer, I would buy them and live happily ever after."

I'm not saying they are the best amps in the world and don't really know what a "giant-killer" is but they sound quite natural and un-SS like with tremendous bass/dynamics that typically are weakness of tubed designs. The issue is the designer passed, now owned by Wyred4Sound but still made in California. The more people I talk to in the industry, the more I find own old GAS amps and never let them go because of their extreme musicality.

I purchased the Zillas as "base amps" to get going with YG and never sold them. Take that for what you will although YG power requirements for "effortless" necessitated monoblocks ime with the exception of the Rowland which was a really nice amp that some preferred. I expect the Ampzilla to be supplanted on the more efficient Fyne F1s but TBD - both SIT-3 and XA25 didn't do that recently. Have a feeling Dart 108 will - which of course was a $35k stereo amp before the mk2 released.

Anyways, as far as Jay's shoot out not sure I care to be without them for a month. Maybe he can convince me. I think most would rather see a pair of Benchmarks (which sound sterile and everyone punts after buying them) go up against his fleet. And he's owned Bel Canto black in digital land already.

My god what is going on in that James Blake song? Sounds like a guy singing at a piano and someone flips a switch on a 20hz warble tone generator. You should put a warning on that song. Midfi systems will launch the woofers in the living room floor.

No SS McIntosh on this list ..??

BTW thanks for the headphones tip Jay , that track gets pretty sleepy , i wish you would play something familiar one day , like with real acoustic instruments , you know with very taxing micro /macro dynamics, mix it up a bit with your current selection ...!

    Agree ,

Hence why i said add to the mix, electronic music very rarely tells you anything about a system, but agree it should be included in the mix for those who hang on them ..!

Today, during part 2 of a 3 part video series i will go over the "mid fi" brands. What will these brands be? There will be shockwaves and also an interesting comment about a brand which i have been told did not want his new amps to be reviewed by me. Which one will it be?
