Ed’s System
I reentered High Fi believing I would start out with analog, but began with Digital for the last 4 years - an incredible journey, and at my current level tough to beat.
Now finally on to Analog. I made a decision to go Kuzma ordering the entry level S, a turntable that has not changed since its beginning many years ago, then while waiting for it to be built, I paid the difference and secured the Stabi R, this may cost me a few weeks, and is guaranteed to be shipped and installed mid November 2019. Here is what it will look like:
Over the past 5 weeks, I have received the phono, cables, record cleaner, accessories and the start of my record collection. It occurred to me why not buy an entry level table to have something for a few weeks and this would allow some burn in on the phono and cables.
I recently came across UTurn, who are building these $400 tables in Woburn, MA. Their web-site is friendly, simple and refreshing. Understanding the table and company better, and a quick search on the web and I was able to order from Amazon, and delivered the next morning - I was wanting this for the weekend, and Amazon makes it just too easy. Side note: I also just got the new TAS Buyers Guide and see the table is on page 170 - I do like seeing my various parts of my system in the magazines as kinda of a qualifier knowing I was not too far out of mind building my Hi Fi rig without their influence.
I’m am so happy with what I have done to my digital and excited to really compare the two. I'll listen more critically over the next few days, but already I can tell they are two very different playbacks.
Digital is sharp, quick and dynamic, and
Analog is slow, steady and the feeling of nostalgia from growing up listening to my Dads Marantz system.
The U Turn is sitting on a HRS M3X platform and is getting a lot of cable and downstream support it most likely would not normally have in its targeted settings.
A din and balanced Nordost tonearm cable is in place but the adapter needed to feed its RCA inputs would not fit, so back it goes to Amazon. I was able to use an Audioquest Cinnamon RCA cable with Boulder balanced adapters to feed the Balanced only Boulder 508, into the balanced only D’Agostino Momentum PreAmp.
I have about 3 hours playing, and must say I am hearing change, it’s getting better, I really like this. I know things will break in even nicer over the next few days.
I gotta admit, writing and other distractions passes time quickly as pointed out when the last song ends on side 2 and you have to keep getting up.
Stay tuned!

Ed’s System
Thank you everyone!
5 minutes out of the box and playing albums, too easy. Mind you I realize it’s a three figure turntable in a multiple 6 figure system, but that’s ok every bird has its place.
I am thinking the star of the show is the Boulder 508, that is fully balanced and fed with quality power and interconnect out, in to a much lesser extent.
One thing or maybe a few, it is simply mesmerizing to watch the platter spin from the listening position aside from holding the albums in my hand and the fun to look at the pictures and books that come along with many of the fine albums available.
I’ll be firing up the digital later today and going back and forth, may not be a fair fight, but it’ll be interesting.

Congrats Ed, on your new ‘tables. I also agree that it’s not just the sound, it’s also the experience playing vinyl and collecting which makes it worthwhile. Enjoy in good health!
And, I simply do not understand these either or people. It’s like voluntarily deciding it’s either always Barolo or always Burgundy. Why not have both?

Re: Ed’s System
I have been considering one of these U-Turn tables simply to have a table in my system. I own zero records but am thinking having the ability to occasionally play one might be good. I would probably be interested in the all inclusive including the phono pre.
So Ed, what is your honest opinion of the U-Turn table? I know it is just a temporary for you, but how has it worked so far until your higher end table arrives? I have read online reviews and it appears as if people really like it. Re: Ed’s System
Randy for the money it’s a no brainer and it gets you in the game without the crazy expense.
I really like it and will keep this in the house and find some powered speakers - it will go into the main living room providing music while we watch the sunsets:
For $120 more and the top of their selection, consider the Special with a Solid Wood Base, and includes the options for mine which are the Ortofon 2 versus 5 cartridge and a tone arm cue lever. Total $479.
Use a decent RCA cable into your phono jacks and isolate the table. From their your system will do the rest.

Re: Ed’s System
Thanks Ed,
Yea, I was considering the special since I think the solid wood base would be better then the MDF. Definitely would get the cue lever since I do not trust my "steady" hands any more . I have a set of Wireworld Eclipse 5 cables that I assume would work, or maybe I can use my Eclipse Silver 7 that I currently have on the tuner. Certainly no need for these on the Mc tuner ... Would get some cleaning supplies also...
Two questions... is the felt mat needed or is it better to put the album directly on the acrylic platter. I remember that it used to be consider good to put an album directly on glass platters??? Does this use a grounding wire or does it do the job without the need of grounding?
I have to really consider if I really want to get back into vinyl. I mean I am very happy with my digital and I have no albums what so ever .... I know I will not want to get into crazy level turntable. I think the in-convenience alone may make me not want to do much with records.
Nice sunset by the way!McIntosh C49, MC152, MR85, R778 | T+A DAC 8 DSD | KEF LS50 Meta w/S2, KC62 (x2) | Rega RP8, Ania Pro, NEO PSU | Technics SL-1500C | Audio Technica VM750ML | Hexmat Eclipse, Yellow Bird, Molekula, Molekula Mini | Pro-Ject VC-E | Falcon NW PC Server (Roon Core & HQPlayer) | Microsoft Surface Pro 6 (Roon Controller) | Wyred 4 Sound ISO Recovery, DC Recovery | Abyss Diana Phi | Schiit Jotunheim 2 | Astell&Kern SE200 | Oppo BDP105

Ed’s System
Your welcome, always happy to provide any support or experience to help fellow club members.
The Cue comes with the Special. I just bought the Cue yesterday to be delivered today as it’s a no brainer, and for me me it’s my eyes.
I’m using the felt and to me it makes sense as the felt is a soft surface. I’m assuming they set it up with the felt, but that’s a guess. This is a good forum question for others with more experience to give their 2 cents, and will post it.
Grounding is all internal, there are no grounding wire connections.
Also, it has a cover I did not use but will when it goes upstairs. The best part, if you don’t like it send it back for a full refund, no questions. If your pondering, and expense is a concern then get the $179 version.
I’m saying something is better than nothing, my hunch tells me there is a lot of tricks you can do to raise performance.
This is Audio, and we always seem to pay dearly for the last points on the board, and knowing this going into something like the U-Turn makes it an enjoyable part of the hobby to have the physical media, read the jackets, listen to the best albums, compare sources and most of all have fun!
And yes, we are very lucky to get some stunning views Mother Nature offers!

Re: Ed’s System
Thank you my Brinkmann friend!
I also agree on your statement on “the either or people”.
I’m sitting here listening to the Soft Parade, from The Doors Soft Parade, released by QRP using Analog Tape Masters, and it has a level of refinement, natural, perhaps what is called analog.
Morrison’s statement at the end of the song Soft Parade, “When all else fails...”, sounds to me as it was recorded in the studio and on the digital version it has a slight, very slight “digital” around the voice, I’m talking a radical separation for critical comparison, and when things are radical, wars start, so back to having and enjoying both!

Re: Ed’s System
For my part I do have a decent digital, and a decent analogue system. And, I do enjoy them both, pretty much equally, for slightly different reasons.
Currently, I am therefore not so much analyzing, as just listening and enjoying. But with the Plasma tweeters detail retrieval is up quite a bit. So also new comparisons might be interesting. Especially, as I upgraded the Coronas to the 2019 revision, which should again increase the resolution at the lower end of its frequency band (1500 Hz - 150 kHz ±3dB).

Re: Ed’s System
It was spec’d with an Ortofon OM5, and if you order directly from them you can go as high as the Ortofon 2M Blue.
I just bought their Orbit Special, that is spec’d with the Ortofon 2M Red, (a step down from the Blue being the top U Turn sells), and has a solid walnut plinth and includes the Cue, a $40 option that I did get for the Orbit I have.
Why upgrade to a third table when I have not even received my first table?
Well Amazon makes it easy but the main reason is I will be giving this as a gift to the family and setting this up in the main living room with powered speakers, (remember, the version I ordered has the built in Phono).
This will make things clean, and simple and at an acceptable budget for non-audiophiles!
I now can bring together the family and some friends in our main living area to spend quality family time as time seems to be going fast these days.

I appreciate your input Ed. I decided to get the Orbit Special myself. I really do not envision myself playing records that much, but as my wife puts it, "you will never get the feeling of being done until you get a turntable". Silly girl, she thinks I will be done... just kidding.... she is amazingly good and understanding about my audio hobby....

Re: Ed’s System
Hey folks,
the u-turn seems like a great way to enter the vinyl world. I have had listen to Dad's vinyl system (His Master Voice, aka HMV) at childhood but never in my audiophile life. Every now and then, I wish I had one but the price seemed way over what I was willing to spend. My digital rig (like Randy) is solid and performs well beyond its price point but having something different as especially as a vinyl at a great price is really intriguing.
What are the top 10 vinyl record suggestions ? I am open to jazz, blues, rock, folk, country...

I grabbed a few yesterday just to have some to play when the table arrives (I also ordered cleaning supplies also). I personally grabbed one of my favorite Pink Floyd albums (which was previously only available in CD) and a couple new albums from people that I enjoy and have a few of their other works!

Re: Ed’s System
There are a lot of great threads like what are you listening to tonight. There are also thread specifically related to albums. There's even a Cass issue that notes the best albums ever. If you don't have vinyl and want some, my suggestion is determine some of your favorite digital music, and get a copy on vinyl. Not only do you know you enjoy the music, but you get an opportunity to really ascertain how it plays compared to your digital.

U-Turn checks a lot of boxes, I have zero regrets on sourcing this turn table, and wished I had earlier on.
You can’t go wrong at this price point even at their base $179.00.
I bet once it moves upstairs with powered speakers, vinyl will get a heck of a lot more play and hopefully by other members of the family.

Love "Wish You Were Here", but already have that in SACD (ripped to server of course). I actually found "Animals" in 180g remastered pressing at the record store! "Animals" has always been one of my favorite albums! I only had it in CD so I think this should be a treat!

Re: Ed’s System
Well it is up and spinning records. So far not bad. I got to get used to the care of records again... it has been like 25-30 years .
Seems like a solid little table, especially for the price...
Putting the belt on was the hardest part of assembly .
I assume some run in time is needed; table, cartridge, and phone pre-amp. But it sounds pretty good. I have not compared yet, but thinking my digital is better, but this might be a little fun.McIntosh C49, MC152, MR85, R778 | T+A DAC 8 DSD | KEF LS50 Meta w/S2, KC62 (x2) | Rega RP8, Ania Pro, NEO PSU | Technics SL-1500C | Audio Technica VM750ML | Hexmat Eclipse, Yellow Bird, Molekula, Molekula Mini | Pro-Ject VC-E | Falcon NW PC Server (Roon Core & HQPlayer) | Microsoft Surface Pro 6 (Roon Controller) | Wyred 4 Sound ISO Recovery, DC Recovery | Abyss Diana Phi | Schiit Jotunheim 2 | Astell&Kern SE200 | Oppo BDP105

Re: Ed’s System
Since I decided to put U-Turns Orbit upstairs, I took advantage of Amazon and exchanged this for the Orbit Special.
The Special comes with a Ortofon 2M Red cartridge, tone arm cue, and a solid walnut plinth - it is a step up from the Orbit.
Unpacking and repacking under 10 minutes, the drop off at a UPS store is simple as scanning my phone for receipt, and done.
It’s sitting on the HRS platform with Stillpoint Minis sandwiched in between, I may try replacing with Ultra SS later this week.
The Kuzma Stabi R should be 2-2.5 weeks out from and man I can’t wait, but this does soften the blow.

Ed’s System
Were in the same boat about record care, but closer to 32 years for me and I’m 50 next month.
I do like the solid wood better option better than the Orbit with a MDF, but still both are good tables for what they are. I’m glad you like it!
The belt is a tricky little pain in the butt at least for a newbie, but changing the belt between 33/45 makes it cool, the Kuzma will be by the push of a button.
I’m not using the built in Phono but would think it would be the same as all our other components, but maybe a shorter time for adjusting?

Ed’s System
Belts are tricky, need to be replaced every now and then etc. To address that problem you might see some new ideas in my system soon as well.
To use the in-built phono pre, while having a Boulder sitting in the rack, would be kind of odd, wouldn’t it?
Btw, 50 is a cool number.

What?????
Once the Kuzma is here, I want to know how it sounds with the Ortofon Red. Is it the Cartridge or the table that really makes the grade. You should also try the built in phono, but I know that is a big impact as I use to use the Rega Fono. When I went to the Allnic it as quite a change.

Ed’s System
Rex, it’s Ed talk, that’s why I have my interpreters at work and home
Was saying yes to Randy, meaning the Orbit Special will take some burn in but don’t think to the extent of amps, cables etc, but it’s a “think” statement as this is all new to me.
I don’t know what makes the greatest contribution between the arm, cartridge and table, I’ve heard so many different takes, so I’ll figure it out.
What I do know is the Orbit Special is sounding better than the Orbit, and they both use the same arm, so this means the cartridge and plinth are contributing something positive.
And you know you will be here before, during and after the Kuzma shows up.

Re: Ed’s System
Having my Denon 103R cartridge rebuilt by Soundsmith with the saphire and line contact diamond really made a difference. Cartridge does quite a bit too. Its kind of odd how such things are such an influence. Is that a blurr of truth in what is really on the vinyl.

Re: Ed’s System
The table looks great than what is posted on the u-turn website I am very interested to know how close it can get to a decent digital setup (say in a $10k range). If I buy one, I would want to do some serious listening, slowly grow my vinyl collection and hence the quality needs to be at least at par or more. If u-turn is not the answer, than what is ? Thanks for all the updates and please keep them coming....

Re: Ed’s System
So far, after listening for one evening, the U-Turn seems pretty darn nice, especially for the money. I purchased the "special" because I wanted the wood base. They do also offer the Blue Ortofon. I got the Red and it seems to work nicely.
I am sure there will be some run in. First very short impressions:
Cons:
* The pops and clicks. The albums are new and cleaned but there are definitely some still there.
* The cleaning and prepping to play an album (dust, static, etc., etc., very careful handling the albums)
* The short time (single side of an album) compared to digital
* Not as dynamic as my digital
Pros:
* Nice looking and appears solidly made
* Great value
* Seems to be musical, especially with acoustic guitar (very good body for lack of better term)
* Sound stage, separation, and imaging is really really good (actually surprisingly good)McIntosh C49, MC152, MR85, R778 | T+A DAC 8 DSD | KEF LS50 Meta w/S2, KC62 (x2) | Rega RP8, Ania Pro, NEO PSU | Technics SL-1500C | Audio Technica VM750ML | Hexmat Eclipse, Yellow Bird, Molekula, Molekula Mini | Pro-Ject VC-E | Falcon NW PC Server (Roon Core & HQPlayer) | Microsoft Surface Pro 6 (Roon Controller) | Wyred 4 Sound ISO Recovery, DC Recovery | Abyss Diana Phi | Schiit Jotunheim 2 | Astell&Kern SE200 | Oppo BDP105

Ed’s System
The Orbit Special is IMO a little gem. If I had known about this earlier, it would have been in place serving duty much earlier, why?
Aside from being a cost effective solution to Analog, the table itself is decently constructed, good looking and simply just works.
It’s made by a good company located in Massachusetts, their marketing on the web site was easy to follow, they have been quickly responsive on a question, the product was packaged exceptionally well, setup was literally less than 5 minutes.
In my system, my digital is really really good, and that’s a whole other story in itself.
Digital is often placed in a position that has to measure up to Analog and it should not have to be, it’s two completely different sources, and both have a purpose.
Now as far as sound quality, it goes back to what’s music has been selected, no differently than digital. What comes out of the Orbit Special is a smooth transfer of sound. Now like most things as you begin to climb the ladder improvements can be had producing better soundstage, lower noise floor, dynamics and more, but again something like the Orbit Special is a great place to start!
To maximize playback, there are guidelines to follow with care and placement, then the options of cables, isolation, phono stages and other pieces of the whole as you go down the line.
What I do hear that differs is the analog is straight forward, old school in a way. The term digital is thrown around, like it sounds digital and I now hear why some people say that, but there is nothing wrong with it, if done right Digital gives you ease of playback, and excellent playback at that.
With what I am hearing with the Orbit Special is magical in its own right, it has earned a place in my system. The naturalness of the playing and hearing the record at a cost that’s more than reasonable in audio won my vote.
Is there something better out there? Maybe, but it’s hard to be disappointed from the point of you don’t like it, simply return it.
I am having a lot of fun with this, and love being able to physically play and handle the media.
