Re: does size matter........
LOL
Good luck getting a room. And YES size does matter. But the construction makeup of the walls do too. Floor and ceiling too.
I have a 12.5' x 20' x 8' tall room. It works pretty good size wise but because of earthquake structural requirements, my right and rear wall are poured in place 8" concrete with the left and front wall wood/drywall. So that causes issues especially with the base since it doesn't have anywhere to go on the right. I've had Raidho D5s in there and now Magico M2s currently and both sound great. I use 2 Magico Q15 subs to tame the base issues. The room also works very well with stand mounted speakers - I've had anywhere from JBL L82, to Vivid S12, to MBL 120s to various LS3/5 type speakers. They all work pretty dang good. Sure wish Magico would develop an M1 stand mount version of the M2.Jock
If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don't have integrity, nothing else matters.

Re: does size matter........
definite correlation with respect to speakers and room. Di-poles for example require room to 'breath' behind them and you should avoid having your listening chair against a wall, never good
Cheers ! …. Dave

Too bad you have to convince your wife you need your own room for your system. Just tell her it's a must have feature of your new home.

Re: does size matter........
It's exactly what I did when we bought our current home in TN before we retired and moved from our home in Indiana. No stereo room in the new house was a no-go for me. I had an addition built onto our house in Indiana just so I could have a dedicated stereo room. I wasn't about to go backwards.

Re: does size matter........
FWIW, The best systems I ever heard at audio shows were not in hotel suites. They were all in much larger rooms. Sometimes the rooms were huge.

Re: does size matter........
You might want to consider purchasing a home that has an unfinished room above the garage where you can build your own listening room to your own requirements. Your wife can decide on anything else about the house; but you will have full control of the listening room. That includes size/dimensions/ratio (yes, they DO matter A LOT), construction materials, electrical requirements for the room, etc. That is what I did in my previous home and everyone was happy.

Re: does size matter........
My situation was clearly an anomaly. My wife had put up with my audio equipment in the living room since 1973. In 2009 she asked if I would take a sunroom on the back of our home and turn it into my music room.
She didn't need to ask twice but it led to a complete house renovation. Kind of like purchasing a new home.
I planed the listening room to be the last room to be completed. It was that or the rest of the house would have progressed much slower.
To answer your original question. My room is 16' x 24' x 10'.Synology 1019D+ - SGC Sonictransporter I9 w Roon/HQ Player- UltraRendu- PBD Stream IF to Playback Designs MPS5 via fiber optic - ARC 40th Anniversary Pre - ARC 610 T's - Martin Logan CLX's - 4 Martin Logan Depth i Subs - Shunyata Hydra, DIY PCOCC interconnects, speaker cables and power cords with Furutech terminations. Re: does size matter........
Size matters but shape matters even more. Lots of research has been done on room ratios that spread our eigen modes for smooth bass. So you’ll need a dedicated space for sure.

Re: does size matter........
I am absolutely convinced that the size of the room matters a lot. Here are my room dimensions: 19'4" wide, 30'7" to wall behind bar, 24'7" to bar, 8'6" to ceiling. This room is in my basement and was a requirement of mine in our new house search. The other requirement was a four car garage. My speakers are Wilson WP 8s and I augment them with two SVS SB-4000 subs.
Regards,
Steve

Re: does size matter........
To me having a "music room" is a requirement. The size of the room is not so much of a requirement because I prefer small speakers and enjoy intimate spaces so having a small room has not been a big deal for me, although the new room is rather small. But I am making it work. I do love that it is at the end of a long hallway and is definitely isolated!

Re: does size matter........
I would think as long as you avoid a cube shape room size isn't as important as freedom to place the speakers anywhere in the room they need to be.
