Re: Does the Audiophile Community Have a Problem?

Maybe, just maybe, it's one of the most beautiful hobbies to be in ... the art of high fidelity in music sound reproduction.

Isn't high-end audio filled with intellects? Sorry, somebody had to ask?

My guess is because we're all over the map on perhaps every last topic including our targets on the wall. Unlike perhaps any other performance-oriented industry. Could it be so much about high-end audio is more subjective than most performance-oriented industries? Sure. Maybe I'm naive but I can't imagine Formula 1 or Top Fuel dragster forums being all over the map on just about every subject. Especially not the target on the wall.

I also think I see a tremendous lack of leadership. More like many sheep without even one shepherd.

Re: Does the Audiophile Community Have a Problem?

In one way I'd compare this forum to systems we call "non-fatiguing". The confluence of the topics, the demographics, and the moderation keep this an easier place to spend time than most internet forums. I don't think that's accidental, there's intent and effort behind it if I had to conjecture.

And the reason there's more old guys into audio is probably the same as most of the people I see driving new Vette's are old: old guys have the time and the spare money to invest in a hobby rather than necessities. Mortgages and autos are paid off, we're not as career invested, etc. We can finally afford, and have the time to actually sit and listen, to the really good systems we wanted since our 20s. Why women aren't as into it, no idea. I've yet to have a wife or g/f who gave a crap about it and most were incredibly unsupportive. The most recent one, I was prepared. I told her the minute she piped up about spending $ on this that it's my damn money I work hard for it and I'll spend it how I want - taboo topic so find something else to pick on (which of course, she did. many somethings.... ).

But bottom line, this forum also has lots of people who not only behave nicely in the sandbox despite differing opinions, but offer their knowledge and experience freely.

sadly though we don't have our hearing like we did in our 20's.......

LOL, they're smarter than us !!

once you get a little older you'll learn to keep the wife and girlfriend separated !

While in most cases I agree there are times when ones opinion runs counter to scientific facts / laws, etc. Sitting at home sipping on our morning coffee, hiding behind our computers typing away gives us subjective power, thankfully I want to believe most here have the objective ability to see the forest for the trees......
    Cheers ! …. Dave
