Deer deterrent alarm in neighbors yard - can hear it!
Hi - new to the group!
We have a neighbor who insists on placing deer and rabbit deterrents around their yard - unfortunately we can hear these alarms that are triggered by motion detection. I took a video of the sound this morning, exported just the audio from the file, then analyzed it in a spectrum analyzer I found online.
Our neighbor rudely insists that my husband and I just have very sensitive ears (her and her husband cannot hear the audio). Unfortunately I'm having issues uploading the screenshot of the analyzer - but the levels range from 440Hz to 18.9kHz. Are we crazy for being able to hear this? Or is this just a normal range for mid-aged adults?
Thanks in advance for any insight!

Too much treble in speakers/amps drives me nuts. The alarms must be annoying.

You might take your spare hi-fi system outside. When they complain, tell them that they must have very sensitive ears.

Re: Deer deterrent alarm in neighbors yard - can hear it!
Welcome.
The range you show fully covers the midrange and beyond, I'd wonder how anyone could not hear it.
My question would be how loud are they in decibels. I mean if you can hear them inside your house with windows closed they must be pretty loud. I wonder if that can be adjusted. If not, it seems like that would be disturbing the peace.Aurender ACS10 w/Audioquest Diamond USB, Esoteric N05xd

Re: Deer deterrent alarm in neighbors yard - can hear it!
Our neighbors to the south of us decided they would start having outdoor parties almost every weekend with loud music with very loud talking with some fireworks thrown in. Our property and theirs are each about 5 acres. We have tried to discuss it twice with them but they just blow it off and continue. I told my wife I should purchase a pair of large Altecs', crank up some AC/DC ( they are country fans ) and let the chips fall where they may. Common sense and maturity have prevailed for now but boy would that be fun?

Re: Deer deterrent alarm in neighbors yard - can hear it!
There's a home down the road from us that has one of these deer whistles. Theirs plays sequential stepped tones on what sounds like an every-octave basis from upper midrange to what I suspect is beyond what my 44 year old ears can hear. When we take a walk through the neighborhood in the evening we frequently set it off if we forget to cross to the sidewalk on the opposite side. It's annoying outside, but it never occurred to me that it might be audible inside a neighboring home. That would really bother me!
For reference, conventionally accepted human hearing range is 20Hz-20kHz, with both extremes diminishing somewhat with age. But let's say you have nominal 60-year old high frequency hearing loss and are only good to 10-12khz - that's still well within the band of your deer whistle. Heck, an orchestra tunes to A=440hz, so there's nothing "sensitive" at all about your ears for being able to hear this thing.Jeff

Re: Deer deterrent alarm in neighbors yard - can hear it!
Hi all -
Thanks for your feedback. There's no update because this is a tricky situation - dealing with noisy neighbors who don't care about others is hard and there's no easy way in going about alleviating it. We've contacted the department of health to see if they can do a noise check. Our property is up against an easement line so we are limited in structures to block sound as well.
Nothing to be suspicious about here. Again thanks for your comments!

Re: Deer deterrent alarm in neighbors yard - can hear it!
Sorry about the noise. That has to be awful.
I have a neighbor across the street that lights up his house at night. The lights are all over the place and he also has a powerful driveway light that’s supposed to turn on and off but stays on. Everything combined floods the house with light.
They are great people otherwise, so I don’t say anything. Ugh.

Re: Deer deterrent alarm in neighbors yard - can hear it!
Joe we had the very same thing happen. Our NEW neighbors put out these "night lights on every corner of their home. They were so bright and shinning at our home. I mentioned it to them them didn't do anything, SO, I went down to Lowes and bought SPOT lights and put them on the side of my home facing theirs, and told them in a letter is was for security. . After two nights their lights were turned off. I left mine on for a few days just to get the point across. They went with a low wattage motion lights and aimed them correctly.

Re: Deer deterrent alarm in neighbors yard - can hear it!
I feel the same way about many dog owners who just let their dogs bark all day and never even try to quiet them down. You know the type. I have always wanted to make a recording of barking dogs and setup a speaker at the property line and crank it all day. The problem with that is, it's disturbing the peace but a barking dog all day is not. In the Poconos where our cabin is, many dog owners just leave them outside 24/7 so they bark all night too. Some people are just A-Holes and you can't do much about it. Usually the laws protect them.
