The CD format is still alive and kicking
2014 data for the US Market makes for an interesting read. What do you make of the following?
- While CD album sales decline year after year, the US market still managed to gobble up 140.8 million CDs in 2014!
- Download sales continue to stall -- they were down 9.2 percent in 2014.
- LP sales totaled 9.2 million in 2014 -- up a staggering 51.8% over 2013!
- Combined (CD, Download, LP) 257 million albums sold in US in 2014 -- down 11% from 2013.
While sales in combined physical and digital formats experienced ongoing contraction [an 11% decline following an 8% decline in the previous year], Nielsen Music reports that on-demand streaming is robust up 54% over last year and 164 billion song streams being played by music consumers in 2014.
While the rise of Tidal, iTunes, YouTube, Spotify, Pandora and a host of other services has made music more easily accessible than ever before, the music industry’s backbone, the album, isn’t benefiting from the transition and 2014 consequently was a dismal year for overall music sales.

I wonder how many of those 140.8 million CDs sold on Amazon for less than $2.00?

Re: The CD format is still alive and kicking
At least in the classical world, two of the big three (Universal and Warner) have been mining their back catalogue with up to 50 CD boxes which often sell for under $2 a CD, sometimes approaching a buck. Of course your are buying 50 CD's at a time, with no jewel cases - cardboard sleeves, etc. Although at least Universal has done a good job generally with nice booklets with the boxes. A good way to expand your musical horizons cheaply.

CDs are going bye-bye in retail outlets. Big Foot and Elvis sightings are more common.
