    Battery power supplies

    http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazin...ion_Review.htm

I don't get how a unit such as this really improves a hi fidelity system. Anyone try anything as such. I mean, heck, there are going to be a flood of Prius and Tesla batteries hitting the market soon. All you need is the charger and inverter, put it in your basement by the power panel.

Anyhow, I always thought DC to ac inverters were all sorts of noise. Not sure how a reviewer is getting a camping device to work as an audio device. Anyone?

    Re: Battery power supplies

I have an old Constant Voltage unit that could be similar without the gauges. Simple input and output but holds a filtered and conditioned constant voltage and can be wired for any voltage. It was leftover from PC based machines we built on C+. I played with it 15 years ago but removed it due to it's hum. I had a insulated box over it for a little suppression. Ideally if you had a basement and could run a cable down and back it would work for an audio setup. I can't remember the cost but do recall it being pretty expensive.

Shadow, that looks like another line isolation transformer. I'm referring to a battery unit. Totally isolated from the grid if not plugged in.

Yeah, realized that shortly after posting.

Don't the Vinnie Rossi units do a switching PS where one bank is charging while the other bank is in action, also isolated?

    Re: Battery power supplies

My ASR Emitter II has a battery power supply for its line stage.

IMO, the amp is at its best from being on from about 2 hours to maybe 10-12 hours. The first two hours are affected by the amplifier output stages fully warming up - each channel has its own outboard power supply - AC - not battery..

Then - after 10-12 hours or so, it starts slowly deteriorating due to the battery power supply slowly losing its charge - very slowly and generally not obvious - kind of like the degradation of tubes. It takes days for the battery supply to fully discharge.

I almost never run it for more than 8 hours or so at one sitting anyway, so it's not really a problem in my case. Plus, it recharges to full value overnight.

    Re: Battery power supplies

Let me go crazy here. Most audio electronics take ac and convert it to DC, right? Wouldn't it be cool if someone skipped the input transformer and DC rectifier and instead provided a connection for a battery bank with charger you could turn of while playing. My RT Audio dac is built that way. Very quiet. Would get rid of utility line pollution.

A great brazilian audiophile, Holbein Meneses, tried almost everything.
For a long time he had all system working with a battery power.
But, i think he turned back off.

"In recent times, I have noticed that power-demanding devices, such as amplifiers, when powered by inverted direct current, come from batteries (UPS), lose some of the ability to respond quickly and articulate the moments of "tutti "Orchestral or climax. The sounds in "tutti" tend to twitch and the climaxes do not reach the ... climax."

I think that’s probably why the ASR has a separate battery supply for its line stage & separate AC power supplies for each output channel - 3 separate large power supplies plus the amplifier itself.
