Respectfully, I worked in digital technologies for many years. Apple, like everyone else, absolutely does "spy". The difference is who they decide to sell that info to and how much of the info they sell.

The amount of info available to us on ANY user of any computer, tablet, Facebook, TV, tablet, Echo, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon anything, Twitter, Gmail, Google, Apple or Android is frightening. Apple is simply better at PR than all the others.

For instance they all read the emails you send and receive to target ads to you....and listen in on your phone even when you are not talking. Facebook is by far the worst offender of this and has been caught (along with Google) outright ignoring any privacy settings you use.

They even sold info on people's traveling to target local stores ads that you drive by to work.

There are several reviews already, which you can find with your favorite search engine. Limit the results to the past 30 days or so. From what I have read, the consensus is that the new 2nd generation large HomePod sounds basically like the original does.

Reviews currently all tech-related sites. To be honest not something I will trust for sound.
