If you go back and forth a few times, that seems to happen. I usually trim the message to avoid that on reply.

That's so odd. Can I ask what browser you are using. I get some odd stuff from Firefox at times on my desktop.

Like Joe commented. Things go wonky after a few back and forth PMs.

I’ve had similar issues with different browsers and on both pc and mac.

The more times you respond to each other back and forth the narrower it will become until it's strictly vertical with either Edge or Chrome.

I know I get some odd things with Firefox, but not having to see those adds on the right keeps me using it, as the filtering is a little better I think,.
