    EMM Labs DA2

I had a visit from the new EMM distributor today. Had the opportunity to listen to the new DA2 today in the store. The distributor was kind enough to leave it with me for a few weeks so we will be giving it a good listen!

The DA2 and MSB Premier couldnít be more different in their presentation. They are both excellent in their own way.

Fun times! Hereís a few pics.

What you guys need to understand, is that as much as I would love to say, (and they are both truly are great), but, some people get some serious butt hurt - even when you are just pointing out TECHNICAL differences or deficiencies. When I had the Innuos on loan and gave my honest feedback, it created a problem. And I liked it, but if you state one negative thing, thatís all they focus on, even if itís technical in nature.

And you guys wonder why there are no ďbad reviews.Ē LOL.

Letís just say that they are both great (and they are!!!!!) and everyone should really listen and decide on their own.

    I don't blame you, Mike.

Assuming you have heard the EMM DAC2X, would you say that the DA2 is similar in sonic qualities?

Yes and no. As you would expect from Ed and his son, the DA2 handles DSD just beautifully. I just played this album in DSD and it was wonderful.

Question for the DA2 guys: what is the break in period?

    Nicely stated Mike.

Without having A/B'd the two units (or speaking with Mike) my "assumption" is that the MSB has a smoother and better mid-range with great vocal clarity. The EMM unit is more detailed and seemingly able to extract more information. Each of those will have proponents.

I have not compared the 2 units, but got the DV2 to eliminate using a preamp.

    EMM Labs DA2

Quick update: this DA2 is breaking in nicely. I find it very particular with the right cables and the overall system synergy. Gobs of detail. Itís a very front row presentation. All good, yet different. Right now we have it connected with to the Luxman C900u and M900u on the M2ís. Getting much better synergy with this system Vs the Fyneís and Viva. The Fyneís have gobs of detail and it might have been too much of a good thing. The sweetness of the Luxman and the balanced neutrality and naturalness is the Magicoís is a good match.

No, I will not give a big comparison to MSB. But let me just say, MSB is like listening to Reel to Reel Tape. This is different, but still good.

Try feeding it with NS1 via EMM Link. I found it to be far superior to my Aurender N10 via USB

Thanks Phil. Just read it. Definitely sounds like a great piece. I will definitely ask the rep to give it a try.

My personal observation is that this is a great DAC which needs some break in and it is a bit particular with cables and source. Get it right and it rewards you in spades. Itís definitely a ďfront rowĒ presenation and definitely a micro detail champ. Big soundstage too. I also found the XLR output sounds better than the RCA.

    EMM Labs DA2

As you are all aware, I spend a lot of time and money to go to shows like Munich, like Axpona and RMAF and I also spend a lot of time testing and evaluating a variety of potential products for the store on a seemingly constant basis. Iíve enjoyed sharing some of these journeys with you.

But itís amazing to me how lazy some dealers are. Itís amazing to me how many just copy me rather than do the travel and the work themselves. Unfortunately, Iím going to have to be more guarded about what Iím evaluating or considering in the future.

Would love to hear the amps, but they're way outside my audio budget.

These are among the best amps I've heard. Together with the Zanden 9600mk2 and the Octave Jubiliee amps.

Yes, "effortless" performance from these amps is great, have listened many afternoons to this system, never failed to impress.

Not sure if my post was confusing, but I am adding EMMLabs. Starting with a DV2 which already has the latest and greatest upgrade. The DA2 will get this upgrade this summer.

    Re: EMM Labs DA2

My upgrade was just finished, and is shipping back later this week.

Thereís a major USB upgrade, but also ďThe entire analog chain has been redesigned improving transparency and definition, especially in low frequency response which I believe will put your jaw on the floor almost instantly. The V2 also has a new FPGA design, new modulators, new digital filters and a more efficient signal path. In the menu you can now designate the output voltage for better pairing with different preamps. And finally, the DA2 V2 is now MQA certified over USB input and core decoding over EMM Link when paired with the NS1 Network Streamer.Ē

    EMM Labs DA2

I started my journey into audio at a young age. Tinkering with my first Aiwa stereo to get the most out of it, then progressed into the best audio equipment I could find for my first few cars. Iíve progressed through the years trying to build the best home audio system I could. Iíve had a plethora of DACs built on more chips than a bag of Doritos. DACs costing a few thousand dollars to cost-no-object equipment that costs more than a 7 series BMW. Ladders, AKM, Sabre, Burr-Brown, a handful of proprietary designs..you name it, Iíve had it come through my system. Yet none of them provided the perfection I sought. It wasnít until the introduction of the EMM Labs DA2 In to my system that I knew my search had ended. The DA2 is exceedingly transparent, without the hint of coloration. A perfect balance of frequencies from top-to-bottom. I was utterly blown away with the drum kit on Medeski, Martin, & Woodís ďLast Chance To Dance Trance (Perhaps).Ē The crack of the snare, the decay of the bell on the ride cymbal, the thud of the kick drum.. all made be feel like I was sitting at my own drum kit. Listening to this DAC is a surreal experience for any true audiophile. With the V2 upgrade theyíve improved what I thought couldnít be improved. Get ready to hear every-last-detail of your source material, good or bad. Iíve found myself re-listening to songs and albums Iíve heard hundreds of times, yet finding myself shocked that I never heard ďthat partĒ of the song before. This is as close to real world reproduction as I have ever heard. Donít let anyone tell you that it isnít possible for an analog sound out of digital equipment. Anyone saying that hasnít heard the the EMM Labs DA2 V2. Pair it with the NS1, and PRE prepare for an even more incredible experience

Biggest improvement is in the bass.
