    here we go again

well i was out messing around today and i ended up a lumber store. and i found these great pieces of wood.
first i had a choice between red oak and poplar for the 3x3's. poplar is lighter which i didnt like but i also hate the hardness of that red oak. it splits its hard to work with and i think it maybe too hard to absorb any vibrations. and it has deep grain which would show up even under several coats of paint. so i went with the poplar. cheaper too!! i also found some maple 1"x2"'s . so now i have the makings of a new stand. first and most important step is getting the wood used to your environment, and getting all the tools together. thats done.lol. then take the rest of the day off and listen to some albums. phew!!! rough day .lol.
this is going to be black stand with removable natural color maple shelves which are on audio points. and the top will be a beast of a piece of maple(butcher block style) measuring 30"x20" , and that will be 3" thick. i still need to find some big points for that to sit on top of the 3x3's
the inner shelves will have 24"x18" of clearance , should be plenty to fit just about anything.
the overall height will be 32" which works out to 14" of clearance on the bottom shelf and 10" on the top.
the frame will be basic rectangles between those 4 posts. and i will spray on like 10 coats of black acrylic high gloss. i want this baby to shine.

for the shelves i am going to cheat and order these. hehehehe. why make em, the lumber around here cost nearly what they sell them for. Maple - Kobi Blocks

the spikes im using for the inner shelves are here Dayton Audio DSS2-BC Black Chrome Spike Set 4 Pcs. - Speaker Spikes - Speaker Cabinet Accessories - Loudspeaker Components

going to take awhile to get this thread rolling as im out of town all week and busy all next weekend.
here a pic to get started. my lumber getting friendly with my enviroment.lol.
thats all i got for now. this is gong to be a good one!!! i hate the other one i built.lol.

This is a quick easy one since Im buying the shelves. Drying oil paint and maybe a clearcoat will take time. I'm going to end up making 3 of these. This taller one for the middle and 2 low mini versions for the sides. One for now

I couldnt see the legs in the other photo. That's real nice.
I just did a 4ft wide rack similar to that but I don't like the way the legs came out or the colors I used
After I finish this one the first one will become a 200 lb paperweight.
What color are those shelves?? Are they stained or painted. I was thinking about sanding those butcher blocks smooth and painting them some sort of hard enamel.
But I don't know what color.

Oh sorry I didn't see that . Spacers are what holds the shelves up. I didn't see the notched legs.
Some people use wood some metal bars. Most popular is threaded rods with washers and nuts to hold every shelf in place.

    Re: here we go again

when i get online on my desktop i have to upload all the pics i been saving. im mostly on here on my phone and havent figured out how to get pics from phone to forum.
well my part is done. frame built , sanded, i coat grey primer, sanded again, then sprayed on 2 coats of flat black laquer, then 3 coats of clearcoat acrylic.
im not getting kobi blocks anymore i found really nice 18x24x2 inch flaming maple platters, and the top is gong to be a 3'thick flaming maple platter 30 x 26. this going to cost ALOT more. lol. but itll be sweet i think im going to mix clear an a dash of black to finish it and give it just one coat so the grain stands out.
the rack inside measures 24 1/4x 18. so the shelves and spikes should fit perfectly. last step is to buy the shelve and make some amp stands as well.

    Re: here we go again

sooooo this thread took awhile .lmao!!! i thought about kobi blocks, i thought about flaming maple shelves, i thought about making my own butcherblock style. then i realized the best thing to do is bust apart my first diy stand and cut down the shelves to fit my new stand.lol.
so i busted off the legs with a hammer and cut the shelves and took off the trim i used on the first setup. it was so big i could cut 2 ampstands, 2 lower shelves and a huge upper shelf. but now that i had it apart i made them thicker too. adding 1 piece of 3/4 mdf to each, and the top shelf got 2 pieces of mdf and one piece of 13/16" maple. then i wrapped them in some maple to clean up the edges. the top shelf was so heavy i decided to use rubber because i couldnt find spikes big enough to not scare me holding up that much weight. if i had to guess id say it weighs 80lbs.
i used isoblocks, which i cut into smaller cubes for the other shelves. i used my biggest spikes for the feet, but i may change that, as im scared of the overall weight once the table and all the equip goes on there.
then since im buying white speakers soon i decided to spray the shelves high gloss white. and im glad i did cause i really like the look.
testing any vibrations from footfalls worked out well, the stand is so heavy nothing vibrates it. so for now im happy with it.
im already thinking on version 2.1, lol!!!!!!!
now all i need is the table to come home and sit on top!!!

    Re: here we go again

Thanks Nelson & Doug!!!! I almost cut my hand off trying to cut those Isoblocks in 4.
But I think rubber is way better in this house, the floor as you can see is the cheapest tile you can buy. I did the flooring here. Lmao!!! And the floors are not level or sturdy. So it's gotta be heavy. My vti rack I used to have. Even filled with sand was very wobbly when walking by. This isn't . Plus the turntable thats coming is pretty much 100% rubber. So that'll go together nice. Lol!!!!! Thanks again

Any time Joe!!! I had an idea to add 2-2 shelf side tables, utilizing the same main posts. it would hold 7 components and have plenty of space to ventilate tube gear . and isolate 3 sources really well but I don't have enough gear for that. You do!!!! Lol!!!

I'm having a rough last couple months. But things are looking up real soon. I'm going to make 3 or 4 stands of different designs and give em out for people to test. I think I can do this for a nice side bizz once I get some performance feedback. I love the work!!

Thanks !!! The color of the shelves was the biggest issue , had no desire to paint them black and I actually thought about it for weeks before I decided on plain ole white.
Since this is for me I only put 2 coats on em. And I didn't even paint the bottoms. Lol
But only I know that!!! Thanks again

Not soon enough Doug !! Everything is taking way longer than I planned . I really jumped the gun selling my table and speakers so fast .
I think everything is going to have to move once I get the floor-standers.
Couch back against the wall. One speakers going to be in the hallway. I'm gonna need some curtains to block off the hallway and cover the rear wall and help with acoustics.
Take me awhile to figure out.
