New Momentum HD Preamp

Jim - After 5 days with my upgraded HD, I can tell you that you will be very happy. Looks like a great weekend ahead for you!

I now have the new unit in my home. I hope to get it set-up in my system before I head to the game tomorrow. First listening should come Sunday and maybe a couple of photos.

should stop reading these threads - I want one!! at least to listen to first.

does anyone use the tone controls much?

My pre goes out on Monday for the HD upgrade. I’m told 5 day turnaround.

Lots of listening ahead the next couple of days since I’ll be without a system for a little bit.

Plus shipping, it would approximately be a 3 week deal, right?

Man, you have patience - if it were me, I would have that unpacked and setup with 30 minutes, maybe less

That’s the crappy part of the hobby.

I am just before the HD and a tone control guy, and have always used tone controls in audio just because.

How are the tone controls on the Dag pre amp? they work at adding a little upper frequency spark or reduce the bass a little?

I use a Deqx hdp-4 for eq in my tape loop and use when I feel the need to. no tape lop on the Dag pre amps, which to me a potential issue.

Tape loop? That’s a term I haven’t thought about since the early 80’s.

It's the perfect way to use eq without it always being in the signal if you are not using it.

I know cj and Pass have them on their pre amps.

It is breaking in nicely. I am very impressed with the additional weight I seem to hear from all of my music.

Sure looks pretty Jim!

Your thoughts on the sound align with my impressions last week. It will get even better. More weight and more natural presentation; and, it was a terrific pre before the HD upgrade! To me, similar impressions I heard when I upgraded my S200 to S250.

A quick question- why not put the TT on it's own stand? My gut feeling is that wooden stand is not vibration proof?

At this level of equipment there should not be any compromises.

Here are a couple of quick shots of my set-up with the new HD pre-amp installed.

The turntable is sitting on a HRS platform as is pre-amp. To be honest the TT isn't used enough to warrant any further expenditure.

I previously had my gear on a audio stand but did not looking at a rats nest of interconnects and power cords.

Hi Jim / Mike

would you guy's please clarify by what you mean as additional weight. the Dag amps are quite rich sounding and slightly bass weighted and now you are saying the new HD Dag pre amp adds more weight.
It sounds like the presentation might be getting a little little too weighty and slow and even affecting the mid range? - or does the original momentum pre amp have no bass weight?

as we know, Wilson speakers are full sounding as well.

cheers

Shane

Shane -

The HD pre upgrade/version provides a more complete musical presentation. It is more natural and extended. It is by no means slower; actually, it is faster than the base pre. If you have ever heard the difference between the base S200 and S250 or M300 and M400 you would understand what has been my experience.

With respect to Wilsons, I have a pair of Alexias. The musical experience in my room certainly improved with the HD upgrade. My wife joined me after I installed it and was so taken we were spinning vinyl for a few hours.

Hope that helps!

A excellent summation of the HD pre-amp in the February issue of Stereophile. JVS says it all in his review.

Trading in my original Momentum pre-amp for a new HD version was one of the best decisions I have made in this hobby.
