    Re: D'Agostino Progression Mono Amp

Dan D'Agostino Master Audio Systems will be presenting new 800-watt mono amplifiers at CES 2016 within the Venetian Hotel suites 30-122 and 30-212. Dan D'Agostino Master Audio Systems' new line of components designed to deliver D'Agostino-quality sound at more affordable prices. The first component in the new series, the 800-watt Progression mono amplifier, will debut at International CES, January 6-9, 2016, in Las Vegas, NV. The Progression mono will be shown at the Dan D'Agostino Master Audio Systems room, Suite 30-122 at the Venetian Hotel, and demonstrated in the EgglestonWorks room, Suite 30-212.

The Progression mono amplifier is the largest and most powerful the company has made to date, delivering 800 watts into 8 Ohms, doubling to 1600 watts into 4 Ohms and doubling again to 3,200 watts into 2 Ohms. It employs a fully complementary driver stage, beefed up with 84 output transistors, a 4000 VA power supply transformer and 400,000 microfarads of power supply storage capacitance.

The iconic look of the Momentum amplifiers' power meters, inspired by the elegant faces of classic Swiss watches, continues with the Progression series. The Progression mono amplifier features a new meter design with a 270-degree needle swing, driven by a high-speed ballistic circuit that enhances the meter's responsiveness. The longer swing allows the needle to cover the amplifier's entire output range.

The venturi heatsink design premiered in the Momentum amplifiers has been adapted to the cooling needs of the Progression mono amplifier by adding a second row of venturis to each heatsink. Each heatsink is milled from a single, 48.5-pound aluminum billet.

"With the Momentum series amplifiers, I focused on combining high power output with a relatively small form factor. But I knew some of our customers had a desire for a larger, more powerful amp at a somewhat more affordable price,” company founder and chief engineer Dan D'Agostino said. "That's why we created the Progression series.

"These components are a little more affordable than the Momentum series, in large part because we used aluminum instead of copper for the heatsinks," D'Agostino continued. "Progression doesn't quite match the sonics of Momentum, but these components still have most of the hallmarks of Momentum, including through-hole construction for the best sound quality and durability, and the same unmistakable, elegant look. Like all our products, the Progression series components will be built by hand in our Arizona factory, under my personal supervision."

The Progression mono amplifier is projected to ship in the first quarter of 2016 at $36,000 per pair, and will be available in silver or black finish. The Progression mono amplifier will be followed by a stereo amplifier, a stereo preamp and a lifestyle amplifier similar to the Momentum Lifestyle MLife integrated amplifier/DAC/streamer.

The Progression mono amplifier will be shown on static display at the Dan D'Agostino Master Audio Systems room, Suite 30-122 at the Venetian Hotel, and demonstrated in the EgglestonWorks room, Suite 30-212, where it will be driving the new EgglestonWorks Ivy SE speaker.

Interesting that the price of the amp is $36K for two monos - lower price point than the Momentums.

Mike (Ritmo)....the Progression line is meant to be more affordable than Momentum line which is where he started out. You can tell from the casework (no copper heatsinks on the side) and the overall build quality that it's built to a lower price point, even though the power specs are superior.

    Re: D'Agostino Progression Mono Amp

Has any one heard the "affordable" Classic Stereo amplifier (~$13K) in the Master Power (Home Theater line)? The Classic Stereo amplifier has similar power, s/n, and distortion specs as does his Momentum Stereo amplifier and seems like it if it can deliver on 80% of the SQ like a decent "bargain" within the context of D'Agostino's product range.

With an input impedance of 100Kohms should be very easy to drive even for tube preamps which tend to have higher output impedances. Maybe an ARC pre with this baby can give you the better aspects of both tube and SS topologies

    Re: D'Agostino Progression Mono Amp

    Cyril,

I've heard the Classic Stereo, and it's a beast It doesn't have the refinement of the Momentum, the midrange beauty, but it's still one smooth monster! In our reasonably large room, it drove the YG Haileys beautifully, with an MSB Analog DAC doing both DAC and preamp functions. I remember people who were not particularly fans of Dan's work being impressed by that system/presentation, as clearly lacked the "edge" of the Krells of old, while maintaining the absurd power/reserves needed to drive demanding speakers.

    HTH

    cheers,
    alex

The Classic Stereo has much of the magic of the Momentum products and a fraction of the price. I real bargain at its price point.

    Jim -

The only time I've listened to the Classic Stereo Amp was at RMAF. You may remember it was being used to drive a pair of Wilson subs. So, I can't comment on its sound qualities.

I am happy to report that I have a pair of Progression monoblocks on order in black. I believe the combo of the ARC Ref 10 and the D'Agostino Progression will work great with my speakers. I currently have a pair of ARC Ref 250 SE monoblocks on loan. Pretty sweet sounding combo. I just can't live with tube amps and replacing the tubes in them.

No I didn't listen to the D'Agostino preamp. I am indeed "wed" to the Ref 10, as It is still brand new with 240 hours on it so far! I made this decision from when I still owned my Ref 5SE and had on loan for two days the Momentum monoblocks. That combo sounded fantastic. The Progression monoblocks are brand new so no ability to hear them before purchasing.

    Re: D'Agostino Progression Mono Amp

Thank you Mike. This afternoon my dealer dropped off the amps, and I am now listening to them as they begin the break in process. The first hour they sounded pretty "plain". I listened again 2 hours later and it sounded a bit more cohesive and less hi-fi. Tonight I will sit down and really enjoy this!

Thank you UltraFast69. Yes I am using Transparent cable throughout my system. This is the first time I ever used one company solely for cable! In the past, I have done what most of us do and that is to mix and match cables. I am waiting for two power cords to return from Transparent. They are being changed from 15 amp to 20 amp to use on the new monoblocks.

Thank you for the compliment. It is now a pleasure to sit down and listen to music. Some older disc that sounded okay before sound much better than I ever thought they ever could. The combination of so much power and three dimensional soundstage presentation is amazing!

    The stands are trick!

I noticed the damping blocks; what are you hearing there?

I had a big discussion this morning on another forum about it. The Progression unlike the Momentum don't have a solid billet top. It's a sheet of brushed aluminum. If you tap the top of the Momentum they emit no ring. The Progression emit a metal ring when tapped on top. I placed them there to reduce that effect. Funny thing is I am not the only one who uses damping plates on top of them. Another system that isn't mine of course.

It was strange to my ears initially. In the past there was a 120" screen, and then later a bare wall so I have never had a reference as to how my soundstaging and imaging should be due to the wall being so reflective. It is now pinpoint and seems smoother from top to bottom. I equate that to not having those nasty reflections off the wall interfering.
