Mike
With the basketball I have only been able to listen for a few hours each day. Here are my initial thoughts. Yes, they are much better amps with one caveat. The plusses compared to my original Momentums: better formed bass notes, the highs are more accurate and everything seems more defined across the audio spectrum. The only issue might be that the M-400's are not nearly as forgiving on poor recordings. If a track is a bit hot or ill defined in the highs it seems to stand out now.Jim

Re: D’Agostino M400 monos are absolutely wonderful ...
Have been trying to follow this thread and another on whether to turn amps off. Maybe it depends on the amp but I would have thought there is a right answer for each particular amp and the best placed person to answer is the particular amp manufacturer. I have a Gryphon Diablo and Gryphon says leave on standby all the time but the amp will sing best after 40 minutes or so of listening. So end of, at least for the Diablo.

Momentum s250
Hi joe,
A dealer is proposing me the s250 for a good price 18,5usd, if i pull the trigger i will drive it with a low end pre/dac like the mytec dac+( no remaining funds for a good pre and dac, at least for the few months...)
Do you think it s a good idea?
My system consists of wilson audio sabrina + devialet 200.

Re: D’Agostino M400 monos are absolutely wonderful ...
Hi,
Logically yes.
But my plan is to get to the higher fields sooner than later and this is the last demo unit.
They have the momentum pre and i can get for a good price as well.
If i go for the combo pre and power( not sure i can do it though) this will be amazing!

Re: D’Agostino M400 monos are absolutely wonderful ...
The Momentum Integrated is also amazing and considering it doesn't need an expensive IC and an extra powercord, it may be a much more cost effective solution.
I was driving my M3s with the Momentum Integrated and haven't felt I was lacking anything compared to Momentum Stereo poweamp (or ANY other paweramp for that matter). You can get the Momentum integrated for ~24k used.
If you buy the Momentum Stereo cheap enough used, you will not loose anything selling it down the road, when you get your funds for the S250. And for the time beeing, which may be 6 months or a year (I don't know what is your plan) you would be able to enjoy a much better sound.Adam

Re: D’Agostino M400 monos are absolutely wonderful ...
The S250 is quite superior to the S200; I’ve had both. Making this purchase as a strategic system building step would be smart. Do know that in order to get the full benefit of your investment, you’ll need to upgrade your DAC and Pre. Being strategic and having the patience will ultimately lead you to a wonderful system.

Re: D’Agostino M400 monos are absolutely wonderful ...
Hi,
I absolutely think it’s a wonderful idea. D’Agostino amps, either stereo or mono are superb. Do anything you can to at least get the stereo amp. I could easily live with the stereo amp and think it’s wonderful.
I personally would have to eventually add a preamp. Even something as inexpensive as a PS Audio BHK preamp will be a wonderful addition to your amp. You don’t have to go crazy buying “the best” to enjoy this combo. I guarantee it.

Re: D’Agostino M400 monos are absolutely wonderful ...
Thks all,
Joeinid, this is exactly the response i was expecting !
What i mean is, my plan was to eventually buy the s250, use an inexpensive pre/dac( i thought about the mytec dac+ since it have the unbalanced output), but even a chord dave can do the job( but for a higher budget)
The ps bhk pre is a good solution also, and i jave a dealer here, then i need to think about a descent dac
I m definitely leaning toward a finance solution now.
Do you think 18.5usd for the s250 is fair?
The dealer is proposing the pre for 18usd as well!!!!

Re: D’Agostino M400 monos are absolutely wonderful ...
While the D’Agostino preamp can be awesome, it doesn’t have to be my first choice. I would rather see you get the amp, a modest preamp and different dac although I think the preamp is your first priority after the amp. The D’Agostino combo is a lot of money and if the amp is in great shape with even a minimal warranty, I think that’s the way to go. You are looking at nearly 50% off for a dealer supported piece. Certainly that seems reasonable for a little piece of mind.
You could possibly hear the combo with your dac and decide that you will be set for a while. I’d check that out or again look for a more reasonably priced preamp.
What speakers do you have? I’m sorry, I’ve forgotten if you’ve mentioned it already.Last edited by joeinid; May 24, 2018 at 10:48 AM.

Re: D’Agostino M400 monos are absolutely wonderful ...
Hi joeinid,
I own wilson audio sabrina+devialet200.
I have the mbl c51 integrated on extended loan now, feeded by my devialet as a source.
While mbl is much much more musical than my devialet it is some times boomy and not as dynamic and transparent as my devialet.
If i buy the s250 i can t use my devialet as source / dac due lack of balanced output of the devialet.
Begining of june i should receive the vitus sia25 to test in my system; but this s250 poped out from the dealer and im really considering it view the perfect known partnership between wilson and dagostino.
Let s see!

Re: D’Agostino M400 monos are absolutely wonderful ...
Awesome, you can certainly try the devialet with rca to xlr adapters. I bet that will sound great with the D’Agostino amp. You get a dac, preamp, phono preamp and I believe tone controls as well. I owned the Devialet 400 and successfully used it with several amps and loved what I heard.
Please get a quality set of adapters with your amp and live with that combo for a while. I think it’s more important to have the D’Agostino amp on your Wilson speakers. Don’t waste your time with the Vitus, focus on the D’Agostino.Fleetwood Deville by Oswald Mills Audio, Vienna Acoustics Haydn Jubilee, Wharfedale Linton w/ stands, Klipsch RB-75, Klipsch RP-160M.

Re: D’Agostino M400 monos are absolutely wonderful ...
A few thoughts from me.
The price on the S250 seems very good...especially from the dealer. I'd jump on it. I don't think you will beat it as a stereo amp. If you're thinking of stretching you budget, the DAG pre would be a sweet combo....but let me interject another thought...if you end up with the S250, have you considered putting a little more money on speakers instead of the pre? Move up to the Yvette from Sabrina and I think you'd experience a MUCH bigger jump than with a DAC or Pre.
Regarding a DAC...I'm not sure what Mytek you are referring to....but take a look at the Manhattan II for $6K retail. I think you'd be extremely happy with this as DAC and PRE. It is an outstanding piece. Don't for one second think it is in any way slumming it. I use one direct to a Rowland 625 S2 and love it. I recently had two very high end preamps on loan and wasn't convinced I needed to own one yet. I also used the Mytek Manhattan directly to a DAG S200 and it was a superb combo.

Re: D’Agostino M400 monos are absolutely wonderful ...
Tdimler,
Thank you very much for the advices.
Firstable , i m not planning to move to higher speaker level, i own sabrina since one year only, and i feel it is satisfying me!
Secondly, i was thinking, if i buy the s250 i will pair it with my devialet200 , wich proved to be amazingly capable as pre/dac/phono.
Now what im thinking of is: another dealer is offering me the progression stereo new for 19kusd, with a good payment plan ,the s250 is offered for 18,5usd for a demo unit( what s annoying me is a deep scratch on the left).
The mytek i was referring to is the brooklyn dac+., but the manhattan is sure way better.
I m leaning more to the s250..... let s see!

Re: D’Agostino M400 monos are absolutely wonderful ...
While I have not heard the Progression series of amps, I understand that they are more neutral and truthful in tone. For me, that’s enough to stick with the Momentum series. I don’t want any more truth/neutrally. I think the Momentums are perfect.

Hi,
I considered the gryphon300 , pass labs int 250, the ypsilon phaeton, vitus sia 25( wich will be on loan in my system beginning of june).
I couldn t get any feedback online on users of these amps with sabrina; so the easiest and the most secure move( the most expensive also) is the dag.
Dag+ wilson is the best combination as far as i know.
The look of the dag is stunning as well.

One question: the s250 weight is ~45kgs and is 47,5 cm deep.
My current tv table is just 43 cm.
I ve seen lot of pics placing it on a platform base on the floor, is it the only way with this amp?
Most of the dedicated hifi racks i know are 45cm deep??!!!

Re: D’Agostino M400 monos are absolutely wonderful ...
A close friend of mine has compared Progression monos vs Momentum M400 monos. He felt the progression were more dynamic and offered more bass slam, whereas the Momentums sounded fuller and more palpable.
He ended up with the Progression monos, as 1) he didn't really have the budget for the M400 2) his Dynaudio Consequence LE speakers are extremly unefficient @ 80dB and a bit 'slow' sounding in a typical Dynaudio way and Progression monos were (thankfully) a better fit for his system.
I haven't heard the Progression stereo, but I wouldn't be surprised if Progression stereo vs Momentum stereo comparo would be similar.
Personally, I would go for the Momentum sound, but then again - I like the sound on warmer side of neutral.Adam

I think it’s Momentum, Classic, Progression in terms of old to new with Momentum being their best but the Progression gets a lot of love these days.

I thought I read the Classic was the most affordable. Any idea which stereo is the entry model, if I may use that term

For a pre and dac combo you may eventually want to consider a Vinni Rossi Lio without the amp module.
My Gear- Mains System-Pass X250 amp, BAT VK-51se preamp, Luxman DA-06 DAC, Magnepan 1.6's, Thorens TD-145 TT, Dual Martin Logan Subs, Vintage Luxman T-110 Tuner, Cables-WW Platinum 7 USB, Cardas Parsec XLR, AQ Columbia DBS 72v XLR, Belden 8402 XLR.

Re: D’Agostino M400 monos are absolutely wonderful ...
Didn’t Amir (I think it was) tear down one of Vinnie’s LPS and it was a total mess? E.g had off shelf smps tucked under a board and really shoddy / dangerous wiring? I apologize in Adv if that is incorrect or taken out of context, but recall a thread from his site describing that product.

Re: D’Agostino M400 monos are absolutely wonderful ...
I have seen those pics as well. I think they run into problem with the original linear psu used to charge the supercaps and had to revert to SMPS, which lead to that cable mess.
But the amp looks well built.Adam

I upgraded the power supply on my Gigafoil v4 to a Weiss PSU 102. It’s very nice step up. But with the new model, you’re looking at $2000 before even investing in a SOTA linear power supply.
