    WHISK(e)Y!

    Who doesn't like a good dram...while listening to their hi-end, kick-a$$ system?

    I've always had a bottle or two around; but lately, I'm really starting to up my game and expand my tasting. Could use some help, and would just like to share thoughts.

    Who else, gets down with the water of life?

    I'm with Ben; the smoky/peaty stuff...can be challenging.

    I knew my choices, tended toward the fruitier stuff: Balvenie being my fav. Wanting to branch out...I picked up a bottle of Ardbeg Uigeadial.

    Um, WoW! I can see why it is considered really excellent, and complex by connoisseurs; but I can admit...I'm not quite there yet. I mean...here are some of their own nosing notes:

    Rich and weighty with heady and smoky aromatics, this expression of Ardbeg is both intensely flavoured and perfectly integrated. At full strength, the initial aroma is a beguiling mix of warm Christmas cake, walnut oil and parma violets fused with fresh ocean spice, cedar and pine needles falling from the Christmas tree. A smouldering smoky coal fire and the deep scent of well-oiled leather brings warmth to the scene. The sweetness of treacle toffees and chocolate-coated raisins bring indulgence through the smoke.

    With water, the deep smokiness increases in intensity, reminiscent of a Christmas pudding on fire. Tarry smoke and diesel engine oil enter the room bringing smells of an age gone by. Rich flowering currants and warm baked banana and walnut bread are served with simmering mocha espresso.

    Seriously; I once saw a tasting wheel, that had a picture of burning tires...but that was in no way, meant to be a bad thing, lol.

    Well...it was an expensive bottle; so I put it back on the shelf, and need to work my way up and back to it. And in the interest of full disclosure, I did not drink it with water; at the time, thinking that was heresy...but now realizing, it can actually help some whiskeys.

    Latest try; Aberlour 12. Ah...now that's more like it. So...what are you drinkin', Lincoln?

    I'm not a Whiskey drinker CD. But I do enjoy sipping Don Julio 1942 along with a good Pale Ale.

    I also enjoy my Martinis. Hendricks Gin, with cucumber chunks instead of olives.

    I go for all the Bourbon aged beers, but not so much straight. I do like the Wild Turkey American Honey on ice or in a beer.

    My ex, recently visited and dined...at the Stanley Hotel (the inspiration, for the setting of The Shining). She's not a Whisky fan...she's a horror buff; but...she dined, took the "ghost" tour, and stayed overnight.

    When in Rome; so she texted me, about which Whisky she should try. I quickly Googled the site, and found the menu. I've seen, even so-called Whisky bars...have 30, 50 bottles, etc; but I was truly blown away(!)...with this selection!

    Kentucky is known for their bourbons, race horses, and pretty women. If you live in Tennessee and can't pick up a guitar and play something on it, they will throw you out of the state. Kentucky is not much different with regards to their feelings towards people who don't drink bourbon.

    CD, my wife is a big time bourbon drinker. We have Woodford Reserve. Knobs Creek, Bullliet, and from Dallas, Herman-Marshall.

    Woodford is my go to. If you haven't tried Angel's Envy from the same distiller, you should. Better yet, Angel's Envy Rye. Mmmm...

    Sweet! And they do it, like they do in the UK too.

    I tell ya...the UK wasn't my favorite trip abroad; but for a Whisky drinker, and cigar smoker...like me'self...it is heaven.

    What you'd pay $25 a pour for, here; is "just" Whisky there...and priced as such. Lots of trouble! The Cuban cigars, not so much; prices at Davidoff are outrageous.

    I'm a Bourbon fan myself. Currently my top two are Eagle Rare 17yr old (hard to get but top top notch) and Wild Turkey Rare Breed. Buffalo Trace as my everyday.

    I have almost a full bottle left of my 15, 1/3 bottle of both the 12 and the 20 (which I am savoring as slowly as possible), and about 2/3 bottle of the Pappy's Rye. I was fortunate to be able to get what I have, as I've stuck out the past two years on getting any more...

    I've been enjoying the Jefferson's Reserve as my go-to lately, and I was able to get the 2014 release of the Four Roses Single Barrel which is excellent!

    Forty Creek good wiskey easy drinking. I have that on my bar. Its my go to for easy drinking along with buffalo Trace. I'm little loaded hockey night with the boys.

    Buffalo Trace has become my new everyday! Easy drinking, but still rich and interesting.

    Now if I could only find it in .750 bottles

    Brian - I have a bottle of the Jefferson's Ocean Aged also, and I really like it! It is different than the Jefferson's Reserve - perhaps slightly more complex, but not better in my opinion though. Given the price difference, I think the Jefferson's Reserve is a better value, which is why it remains my "go to" bourbon.

    I'm fortunate to still have some of my Jefferson's Presidential remaining. I consider it to be the closest thing to Pappy's 20 that I've ever found. I really hope they release it again sometime!

    Thanks, JJ. I am not really a Whiskey drinker but know a bad one if I taste it. When you say Complex, what exactly are you describing?

    I am also curious as to the difference between Bourbon and Rye. I am told Rye is sweeter, but without side by side, I really don't have a clue. Is Rye easier to drink because it's sweeter, or just more of a preference?

    The additional complexity of the Jefferson's Ocean likely has to do with the differences with it being exposed to ocean air while on "Voyage" at sea. It tastes like bourbon, but different also. I can't really taste the salt air per se, but there is a layering of different flavors outside of traditional bourbon. To me, it's good, but not really worth the additional $25-30 per bottle over the Jefferson's Reserve.

    Rye whiskey can be sweeter and smoother than bourbon, but not necessarily. A lot of it depends on the brand, age, etc. It's really more of a preference. I like Rye Whiskey, and drink it sometimes with my stepfather as that is his favorite.

    I typically have seven to ten different Scotches, two or three different bourbons and a rum or two on hand at any given time. I favor the scotches.

    Started branching out from Jefferson's. We started with a Templeton Rye, witch was smooth and so easy to drink, we finished it during our week in Virginia Beach early December. Then we tried a Knob Hill Rye (100 Proof). Good for Egg Knob, which is what we have been doing with it. We just finally opened a Buffalo Trace after reading so many reviews and a local Brewery aging in BT barrels. I still think the Jefferson's Reserve and the Templeton Tye are my tops for now.

    I was just offered a bottle of Pappy, but I was a little short on change I sure would love to try it some day tho.

    as for Manhattans, make mine JP Wiser's Rye 12 yr Small Batch (can be tough to find)

    I will take a barrel of the scotch Roy Hall had at RMAF 2016. I had a sample and it was the bomb. Too bad I don't remember what brand it was.

    So I am still getting beat up over the bottle of Buffalo Trace I bought. I guess when your very first bottle of Bourbon is Jefferson's Ocean, and the second is Jefferson's Reserve, dropping back to something half it's price just does not work out so good. The BT is not rotgut, but still nowhere as smooth as Jefferson's.

    So I agreed to drink the BT while my wife sips the JR until I can finish it, which won't take too long

    Got myself a few more bottles of Templeton Rye. It goes down smooth and fast. I have to order it each time as my place does not stock it full time. Al Capone's favorite.

    I think I nee a qualifier here. When you say "Whiskey" I think of Crown Royal. Bourbon is far different to me, like Bullit and Jack Daniels and such. Scotch is more different stil, and I am definitely not a fan of thatl. I'm also not clear on the difference between Rye and Whiskey.

    Can you please differentiate or are you grouping all of this under the header Whiskey?

    Whisky or Whiskey is a general term for barrel aged distilled spirits made from grain/corn/malt but not sugarcane (rum) or agave (tequila) or grapes (brandy/cognac). Different countries have different laws that govern what constitutes Whisk(e)y.

    In Scotland (where it is spelled without the "e"), there are a ton of rules and laws, but the two types you commonly see are Single Malt and Blended. Blended contains Malt whisky as well as grain whisky. That is stuff like Johnnie Walker. Single Malt contains only malt whisky from a single distillery (Such as Macallan). The age statement (which may or may not be present) pertains to the youngest whisky in the blend. Usually, Scotch Whisky is aged in used barrels from something else, most commonly used Bourbon barrels or Sherry barrels but also sometimes Port or Rum. Sometimes they use a combination of barrels.

    In America, there are different types of Whiskey (always with the "e") too. The most common would be Bourbon Whiskey (Bulleit, Buffalo Trace), Tennessee Whiskey (Jack Daniels), and Rye Whiskey (Rittenhouse), again all mandated by law on what it must be composed of and how it is aged. In general, bourbon must be at least 51% corn with the other grains usually a combination of Rye, Wheat, or Barley as the "flavoring grain". It also must be aged in new (unused) charred oak barrels. Minimum aging for bourbon is 4 years and goes up to the 20+ year range. As it stays longer in the barrel, it will get smoother but more oaky flavored. Rye on the other hand, must be at least 51% rye. So there can be a lot of overlap between the flavor of some bourbons and ryes (E.g. you can have a bourbon made from 51% corn and 49% rye and it is a bourbon. If you change it to 49% corn and 51% rye, it is a rye whiskey). On the other hand, you can have a Bourbon with no rye at all in it that uses wheat as the flavoring grain and a 100% rye that only has rye in it and they will taste nothing alike. The exact composition of grains that is used is called the mash bill. Other variables include how much char is placed on the barrel (but it must always be new, unused oak), what type of yeast is used to ferment the grains, the climate and location of where the barrels are aged, as well as the length of aging.

    Ireland has similar but different laws. It is more similar to Scotch but generally much smoother/lighter in flavor. Jameson is a popular scotch.

    Canadian Whiskey (e.g. Crown Royal and others) have their own sets of laws but are usually a combination of a form of Rye whiskey and a neutral grain spirit (e.g. vodka).

    Then there is Japanese Whiskey, Taiwanese Whiskey, Indian Whiskey, Australian, French, Belgian Whiskey all of which have their own rules. Most of these are very, very similar to scotch (meaning they are made based on malted barley) and for a long time were considered inferior, but some of the Japanese (e.g. Yamazaki), Taiwanese (e.g. Kavalan), Indian (e.g. Amrut), and Australian (e.g. Sullivan's Cove) have begun to compete pretty well with Scotch Whiskeys.

    So in summary, Whisk(e)y, is a general term with lots of subtypes which is why there is confusion. Its just like amplifiers. Class A, Class AB, Class D, Valve, Solid state. They are all amplifiers but very different in "flavor".

    Thanks for clearing it up for me. However, I still think of scotch, bourbon, rye and whiskey as separate things, not to be lumped into one category. When you say "whiskey" I definitely exclude scotch from that category, though now, after reading your excellent post, I might include rye and possibly even bourbon in "whiskey". Why? Probably because I can drink each of those but completely detest scotch (single or blended).

    Bob, if you ever get to Scotland you will quickly find out that Scotch is indeed whisky.......for the most part only us goofy Americans call it 'scotch' !

    One other addition to Clint's great explanation, bourbon barrels are used but only one time for bourbon aging, after which the majority get sent to Scotland for their whisky. Bourbon, Port and Sherry are the predominant barrels used in scotch whisky aging.
