Tequila Surprise
I have been a Tequila drinker for years. Most of the time it is in a glass with ice. Not mixed or lime.
Anyone that has tried it knows it can go from amazingly smooth to curl your toes.
For the last few years my choice for pouring over ice has been Don Julio 1942. Not something I drink daily but a couple times a week.
Any way I went to Costco to purchase a bottle today as they are the lease painful for pricing. I asked the cashier to retrieve a bottle from the cabinet and he did.
When he was ringing it up he mentioned that he was a 1942 drinker also but had changed to the Costco brand Kirkland and it had the same taste.
Listening to him go into detail I was 100% skeptical but, I figured I had nothing to lose as I could always use it for mixed drinks and it wasn't expensive.
When I got home and started to make dinner I poured some in 2 glasses with ice and let them set for a couple of minutes. I started with the Kirkland Anjeo and was stunned at how smooth it was, no hard sharpness or bite, wonderful. After a couple of minutes I then tasted the 1942 and was baffled at an almost exact taste. I went back and forth a number of times and nothing changed.
I would say knowing which was which the Kirkland was 99% of the 1942.
If I was doing a blind test i'm not sure I would know which was which. I will do that in the future.
I just stared at them and thought. But you can't taste as good as my fancy tequila. I can purchase 5 bottles of you for what my fur-fru one costs.
My immediate thought was I put a $10 cable in rather than a $700 cable and it sounded the same. I just stared and said you can't taste that good.
My only concern is will it taste as good with future bottles? I guess time will tell.

I’ve never tried drinking it straight up. I’m curious now to give it a shot. No pun intended

Re: Tequila Surprise
When my wife got home from tennis I was making tacos for dinner.
She said what better time for me to do blind testing with tequila than before a Mexican dinner.
I did 2 tries not knowing which was which and only because the 1942 has a tiny more smell and finish in the back of my throat was I able to pick the correct one.
This was a tiny difference and will depend on your sense of smell.
This is an amazing Tequila for the price.
Joe, I suggest being sure it is a good product with ice. Let me know what you think.Synology 1019D+ - SGC Sonictransporter I9 w Roon/HQ Player- UltraRendu- PBD Stream IF to Playback Designs MPS5 via fiber optic - ARC 40th Anniversary Pre - ARC 610 T's - Martin Logan CLX's - 4 Martin Logan Depth i Subs - Shunyata Hydra, DIY PCOCC interconnects, speaker cables and power cords with Furutech terminations. Re: Tequila Surprise
my suggestion for doing any meaningful comparisons is to leave out the ice and sip them neat. the kirkland anejo is good I have some here, so is their Vodka. My guests cant tell the difference which is fine by me, means more of the good stuff for me.

Re: Tequila Surprise
In my comparison I failed to mention that the tiny difference in smell and finish was vanilla. Others may find a different flavor but that was mine. The Kirkland did have the vanilla but not quite as much.

Re: Tequila Surprise
Thanks Dave but no, Ill stay with wife supported blind alcohol tasting though.
As a retired CPA I think she had an ulterior motive to try to keep the spirits budget in the house lower.
I did make almost all of the cables I use now from OCC copper and sold 90% of my Shunyata cables though. Still have a few more to make.Synology 1019D+ - SGC Sonictransporter I9 w Roon/HQ Player- UltraRendu- PBD Stream IF to Playback Designs MPS5 via fiber optic - ARC 40th Anniversary Pre - ARC 610 T's - Martin Logan CLX's - 4 Martin Logan Depth i Subs - Shunyata Hydra, DIY PCOCC interconnects, speaker cables and power cords with Furutech terminations. Re: Tequila Surprise
Interesting! About a month ago I purchased a bottle of each, DJ 1942 and the Kirkland Anejo. I have yet to open the Kirkland - maybe this evening is a good time!

Re: Tequila Surprise
I have both of those Tequilas. I also have some Costco bourbons and Scotches. I think they are all very good values. Their Isley Scotch is very close to Lagavulin.

Re: Tequila Surprise
I drank Mezcal years ago. Maybe in the early 80's and it would have been a cheap one. The worm never looked that interesting and I never got that drunk on it to try.
About the same time I thought my cheap Cuervo was the bomb.
I remember picking my brother up at the airport when I was getting married. This brainiac with the Masters Degree thought shoving a bottle of Mezcal in the outside pocket of his soft side nylon luggage was a good idea. He picked it up off the conveyor belt and liquid was still running out of it.Synology 1019D+ - SGC Sonictransporter I9 w Roon/HQ Player- UltraRendu- PBD Stream IF to Playback Designs MPS5 via fiber optic - ARC 40th Anniversary Pre - ARC 610 T's - Martin Logan CLX's - 4 Martin Logan Depth i Subs - Shunyata Hydra, DIY PCOCC interconnects, speaker cables and power cords with Furutech terminations. Re: Tequila Surprise
Trying it tonight with a few drops of the vanilla flavor it was missing. It's an improvement but still not there though.
Then again for $29 vs $145 it's very good.
My account wife, is still rooting for the Kirkland.Synology 1019D+ - SGC Sonictransporter I9 w Roon/HQ Player- UltraRendu- PBD Stream IF to Playback Designs MPS5 via fiber optic - ARC 40th Anniversary Pre - ARC 610 T's - Martin Logan CLX's - 4 Martin Logan Depth i Subs - Shunyata Hydra, DIY PCOCC interconnects, speaker cables and power cords with Furutech terminations.
