Unbelievable attention to detail in every way....Centaur Stereo...

...And I haven't even plugged it in yet.

Thanks to John at Audio Salon, my Centaur Stereo Amp arrived today. Can't wait to fire this bad boy up. Let the games begin...War of the Amps and assuming only one will be the victor (Hegel H30, VAC 450S, Constellation Centaur Stereo).

More to follow....let me know who you are rooting for!!...and why...

I knew in the first few notes we had a (clear) winner...sorry to preempt the voting. Not even warmed up and with compromised cabling, the impact and impression was OVERWHELMING. Last night I listened extensively to Burmester CD 03 thru the VAC and Ref 40, a great way to sonically and musically test gear, in addition to some prized vinyl. I've never listened to a component and immediately felt compelled to grap a pad of paper and pen, but this Centaur made me want to. As I listened here is what I wrote (noting it may be very system and room dependent):

Not hyperbole....I'm finicky and fickle and not easily impressed, I knew in the first few notes, this is as it should be. Left me wanting for nothing (a feeling I cannot ever remember having). I cannot believe what I am hearing. Instant connection like when I met my wife or first drove my R32 (even more instant than my SL600...price doesn't dictate outcome). The Centaur is a game changer, transformative (truly)....as impressive (actually more) of an upgrade than any component change I've made including ARC Ref40 or Magico speakers...and those two were huge upgrades.

In short, more of everything...liquid smooth, all there for the taking, smooth and musical. Only amp that has been able to grab me by the balls and whisper in my ear at the same time.

This is how I want my Magicos to sound, for real. Enveloping; heard detail not there before; all the nuances captured...felt like human beings were singing to me; wanted to kiss the singer of track track one...never heard anything like this before.

What I read about all the potential of my ARC Ref 40 preamp, I'm now experiencing, in spades. I understand its potential now. Makes me feel better about acquiring it by a country mile.

Sound stage laterally is FINALLY balanced and even in height and width and presence. Layers, layers, layers. Round, round, round.

Dynamics finally. Not artificial or hyped but there and in my face (or I should say in my chest). But perfect flow and timing. Fast when needed. Slow when necessary. Transients galore. Everything but never too much, but always climactic and engaging.

Finally, detail and all of it at low volumes.

Totally balanced across the spectrum and continuous not disenfranchised presentation.

Now I understand macro and micro detail and dynamics in perfect tandem.

I'm done, the race is finished, I'm in love finally with an amp (ok that may be hyperbole).

The Centaur's sound is "transcendent, emotional, beautiful, pretty, determined, in control, effortlessly powerful, balanced; and, it conveys the drama and nuance/detail perfectly in the same moment"

Sorry for the rambling, but wow wow wow wow wow. I am very impressed and happy. All the hours researching, dollars spent, and the reach was worth it for sure.

PS, the bass and slam and movement of air from my Magicos is now in a different league, naturally and harmonically correct at same time.

No just straight from the ears/heart with a deep addiction to this stuff....tonight I felt the perfect marriage between gear and music. Nirvana. Such a difference, and therefor such a relief.

Thanks, Joe. I heard a huge leap with the ARC Ref 40, but was getting (solid and worthy) incremental improvements on amps the past few years. The Centaur is in a different galaxy altogether....still getting my head and heart around what my system now sounds like. And incredibly, my source components especially digital now sound like they were upgraded. Bonus!

It was beautifully written; I could hear it myself and savor it with pure delight.

By the way, which music recording(s) were you listening to?

Thanks tonight it was primarily a reference cd by Burmester "Burmester CD 03". Great music and exceptional sonics. Also spun some vinyl.

Yes, but who were the artists Darrin, and what kind of music were they playing?

Got a picture cover of the CD, a link to it? ...And some vinyl as well?

    Hi Darrin

Very glad your enjoying the amp, happy I was able to help with your purchase. My pair are on loan to a local client, bad timing as I will be installing the S5's tonight. Really excited and looking forward to this combination, I've already received some great feedback on the mono blocks, Altair and the Q5.

Upon further reflection this morning, I quickly put together a visual of how I feel...(no offense to other amplifiers or owners of the amps, just my way of praising Constellation Centaur with a little light heartedness):

The monoblocks and Virgo II would most definitely push the evolution even further! I tried to pick some of the more highly evolved folks of the past century and how the Centaur has punch (Ali), detail/intelligence (Einstein), etc.....with convenience of google images dictating ease of selection!

Darrin...congrats on the Centaur amp. I believe RH just reviewed the mono amps version in TAS and said they were direct descendants of the Hercules monos he first reviewed last year I believe and that they set a new benchmark in "affordable" or rather "attainable" amps at $54K (). In any case, I am glad you have found your holy grail for now, and wish you happy listening for many years to come with your current combo. Enjoy

PS: For some reason, I could not see any of your attachments. Not sure why.

Burmester CD-03...I liked tracks 1,3,4,9,10 with 4 probably being my favorite.

I recently listened to some great vinyl: George Benson "Breezin" (MoFi version), Shelly Manne and His Men Live at Foxtrot vol 3, Art Pepper (vintage recording), Pat Metheny and Lyle Mayes "As Falls Witchita Falls...", and some others...

    Darrin,

Looks like a killer amp. Is that rated at 125 or 250 watts class? What's the house sound Constellation?
Gryphon Essence stereo amp and preamp/dac Hurricane power cords
Fyne Audio F1-10, Lumin T2, Moon 260 Transport
Shunyata Research Everest, Sigma V2 XC,
Shunyata Research Sigma USB and Ethernet
Argento Audio speaker cables and interconnects

That's my only Bennie Wallace music I have. Does he have a cd or album that is your favorite?

Scroll down a bit and then click on any album from his Discography, then click on [>]
at the beginning of the first song, then it'll automatically play thirty seconds of each song.
And do that for any album to find your 'own' favorite musical inspiration.

Some personal favorites of mine (in no specific order other than the year of release):

    * Big Jim's Tango (1982)
    * Talk of the Town (1993)
    * The Old Songs (1993)
    * The Nearness of You (2004)

I think my S5 speakers wake up a bit at the 2ohm 800 watts at certain frequencies. I believe other Magicos (Q series) may need monoblocks. One stereo amp is plenty for the S5s. Regarding house sound, I think they strive for the delicacy and engagement of a SET amp with the control and grip of a big SS amp, and liquid musical smoothness (without any loss of micro or macro detail/dynamics) of a Class A amp. One feature that continues to amaze me is the level of inviting detail all for the taking at low listening levels. I went back and listened yesterday (afraid day one had some magic pixie dust in my ears), and all the things I noted on day one were alive and kicking on day 2!

Eager to hear your POV, John. As great as the Magicos sound with my VAC 450S (open, harmonic, musical), the Constellation Centaur takes them to a completely different league in my opinion...shockingly good on every dimension. Almost like the Constellation was made specifically for the S5.

Darrin - how are things sounding? Can you describe the Constellation vs ARC? Also - I heard your speakers (S5). Holy F! Impressive! Loved them!

Howdy. The Constellation with the Magicos is heaven. The VAC didn't have the current to bring the Magico to life. The centaur woke up the entire speaker while keeping it like a SET amp. So sweet and delicate (like a whisper) but ballsy dynamics. Hannah Montana best of both worlds. I found having ARC upstream (ref40 and ref2se) added meat to the bones and kept things very textured. The constellation preamp brought more detail esp at lower levels but lost a bit of the magic the arc preamp brought.

Net net Magico s5 and constellation s5 were made to be together.

Oh brother! I can imagine that is a match made in heaven. Those S5's I heard are still haunting my brain (in a good way). Big, deep, wide soundstage with maybe the best bass I've ever heard.

Do you prefer the Constellation or ARC REF 40 preamp?

Mike loved loved loved the Soulution 710 on the Futuras. He's too chicken to try it on the Aida. I bet he'd be singing a different tune if he hears that combination.

    LALALALA.....I can't hear you!!

I'm thinking SimAudio for Raidho's. It is so far the unanimous vote among three guys I know who own Raidho, oh, and some super nice guy name Lars who owns the company! . They all mention other brands too, but all three unanimously mentioned SimAudio. Hmmm....further research needed.

P.S. I would love to hear the Constellation on the Aida's. The D'Agostino too.
