    Newest iPad

Please order several directly from Apple. They make great stocking stuffers and my Apple stock could use a boost.

Apple unveils completely redesigned iPad in four vibrant colors - Apple

The new iPad is available to order starting today, October 18, at apple.com/store and in the Apple Store app in 28 countries and regions, including the US, with availability in stores beginning Wednesday, October 26.

Wi-Fi models of the new iPad are available with a starting price of $449 (US), and Wi-Fi + Cellular models start at $599 (US). The new iPad, in 64GB and 256GB configurations, comes in blue, pink, yellow, and silver.

iPad (9th generation) will remain in the iPad lineup. Wi-Fi models of iPad (9th generation) are available with a starting price of $329 (US), and Wi-Fi + Cellular models start at $459 (US), in silver and space gray finishes.

My iPad3 is over 10 years old and mechanically in perfect working order and still has a long battery life. Unfortunately the OS 9.3.5 is horribly outdated and won't load new programs or even my email (due to security updates by the providers). Regardless of what happens (or doesn't) on Black Friday, I am going to order a new iPad for my birthday in November.

I know it's not what you were hoping for, but I just bought the new Apple TV with upgraded power chip and ethernet port.

I have a first gen iPad Pro that is running current OS. I am curious why yours will not update the OS.

I have tried with no success. I select "software update" in settings and I get the message my software is up to date iOS 9.3.5

If someone knows a secret handshake please tell me. My iPad is in perfect mechanical condition. I have no desire for a new one aside from dated OS issues. In addition I have a Zaggfolio hard clam shell case with keyboard that works perfectly. It won't fit the new iPads. That is another reason I have waited so long to replace the iPad.

I will try to help. If you go into settings and click general and then about there is a model number. If you can post or message that it would help. I understand your frustration, without the updates many apps shut down completely.

I don't think you can update the old iPad to run the current or latest OS. I have an iPad 4, the latest version it can run is iOS 10.3.3. I wasn't able to update it to run the newer version. It is about 10 years old but running fine as a remote control, running Jremote, mPad and Lumin app.

    Jim,

That is my experience. The problem with the Apple business model is their equipment is built too well.

Unfortunately Jim is correct. You can update to v10 OS and that is your limit.

Another note on buying iPads is if you dig through the Apple web site and find the refurbished page you can get even larger price bargains. They also let you buy AppleCare for the refurbished models. Just an option.

I confirm that the model number you posted is indeed an iPad 3 (2012).

Your iOS limit is normal. It matches Wikipedia:
    iPad (3rd generation) - Wikipedia

iPad 4 with Retina display can indeed upgrade to iOS 10.3

first gen iPad Pro is dated 2015.

Imagine one day *all* Mac computers normally operating in our office were no longer allowed to develop software for the latest iOS, in the same way apps refuse to load on your iOS 9 (our app still does, and most of our competitors abandoned it already). This actually happened to us.

Planned obsolescence. I didn’t realize my 1st gen pro was newer than your iPad. If you can swing one of the large screen pro models they are great for aging eyes.

That seems to be a very misunderstood and overused term. The alternative is a complete freeze on any advance in technology. As OS's and software grow, they require more power and such. It's not that Apple made sure in 3 years it wouldn't run so you have to buy another one, it's that technology grows past what was available in the past.

The glass-half-full philosophy is be grateful. Smart phones have more computing power than my first Windows computer. Thumb drives have as much storage capacity as many HDDs. Certainly more storage than my first computer. Standing still means going backwards.

I am not upset with Apple for moving forward and dating my iPad. I am upset because they make me feel old. Where did the 10 years go? In the meantime my biological CPU was never upgraded and my RAM has corrupted files.

I just received my new 10th generation iPad. It is being used as a dedicated server for Apple Music Lossless, USB into McIntosh D150 Pre/DAC. The retina screen is bright and clear and navigation is quick and easy.

Plan B has been executed. I wanted a larger laptop to replace the 11.6" screen Lenovo I use to control my music server via VNC. I ordered a cheap 14" HP. I was able to find one with an RJ45 port. I find a wired connection works best for my application. Music is stored on the server. The laptop is only a remote control device.

The Lenovo will be moved to my great room to replace the ancient iPad. The new HP is less expensive than an iPad and much less expensive than an iPad + keyboard/case. I also find a laptop more versatile because I am familiar with Windows on my main computer so I don't have to learn any new tricks.

The bonus is I get an improved control computer for my music and a replacement for my iPad and keyboard with a single purchase.

Sounds like a well thought out alternative path. Crazy how cheap laptops have become, I just received a 17” screen HP with latest gen i3 cpu for right at $500.

Oh boy - the "let's blame evil money response" when someone is explaining a term people overuse but don't fully understand. Bravo.

You can live in a world with no progress and no advances in technology because those evil companies are trying to sell products. I'll live in the current world full of progress and innovation. Thanks.

PS. By all means all those evil audio companies better stop immediately improving their products and releasing new versions of gear!!

Ummmm.....I worked in technology for 25 years. You have no idea what you are talking about in regards to hardware limitations dealing with software and as you put it - "code".

Of course they can write your "code" on old hardware. But it would be slow, limited in functionality and basically useless. Who wants to be stuck with that crap all in the name of the battle against those evil greedy companies?

You are welcome to continue using old streamers and DACs from the past that have been eclipsed by new hardware which allows improved software, sound and performance all in the name of fighting the money evil. I'll take the newer better gear, thanks.

No - no nerve hit. Just stating the facts.

Mr Michael let’s agree to disagree and move on. Throwing shade on fellow members is not a good look.

BTW some audio gear from the 80s and 90s stand the test of time very well. New technology has its place but not necessarily the solution for everything.

No one said it is. That gear from the 80's and 90's you refer to isn't running the code you talk about above.

How many steamers are there from the 80's? Trying to compare that technology to a simple amp or preamp from 40 years ago isn't the same things. They are completely different.

You are welcome to use 40 year old technology. I personally like innovation and moving forward.

No shade thrown - just responding to your statements.

Why not get last year model iPad (2021 - 9th gen) for less than 300 bucks?

That's a great way to get some serious performance at a great price.

I am not a technology expert but I really like the improved user performance and reliability of new Apple products. I keep my laptop, iPhone, and iPad up to date as I use them daily and always find them better than the last. I am smitten with the quality and user-friendly operation of the new 10th generation iPad and the streaming sound quality from it is indistinguishable from CD's played on my MCT500 CD player. For me and my system an incredible bargain for only $449.

    All good points.

Plus, with the dramatic increase in the efficiency of the new hardware, it also allows for pretty big gains in the battery life and how long we can go between charges. That is primarily due to hardware changes and less to do with software changes (though they do work together. New code alone would not do that on outdated hardware.

I love being able to go longer between charges on my phone, iPad and laptop - especially when traveling.

Then I would spend few more dollars and get the iPad Air 2022.

    * For best value the iPad 9th gen.(2021) is hard to beat.

At that price (best value tablet in the world) every member of all the families should get one. They also make the perfect gift to the people who cannot afford one. Christmas is just around the corner.

Even at full price ($329) it's a steal, almost.
Think; $330 today in a hiend stereo sound system doesn't even buy you a level or a duster for your TT.

    2022 iPad (10th generation) review | Macworld

Last year's iPad is a better deal, in my calculated opinion.
$270 on sale, wow, the lowest I've ever seen in the US.
I bought one (9th gen) for Mom on her birthday last September; $500 Canadian, with tax.
Everything costs more in Canada, a whole lot more. It is expensive to be a Canadian audiophile, and an Apple fan. But we're talking about Mom's birthday here; no time to be cheap.

    100% agree.

A Folio case for your iPad
    Access Denied

As for a keyboard your iPad has one integrated. For a PC a keyboard ok, for an iPad ... if you insist check Logitech Bluetooth keyboard.

    Or a combo, case/keyboard.

Quick question: In my above post two links said "Access Denied" ... Do you have access to those two links or not? Me I don't have any problem in accessing, it's all 100% accessible.

Here, a fresh analysis from today, between the iPad 9th gen (2021), iPad 10th gen (2022), and iPad Air (2022)
iPad 10 vs 9 vs iPad Air: How the lineup compares - 9to5Mac

Pick the one for your own personal use and budget.
The best processor is in the iPad Air of course, for more money (out of the three here).
The best value right now, IMO, is the iPad 9th gen on sale for only $270; it'll do everything people wanting an iPad for $300 or less want.

    Re: Newest iPad

My old BT keyboard works with my new iPad. There is even a slot in the keyboard that holds the iPad in the proper viewing position. I can't use the rest of the case but the keyboard works
    great.

I get 3 free months of Apple TV+. I looked at the website and was not impressed with the videos displayed. There was no description of the content. Any suggestions for a good evening's viewing?
