    Question Apple Surplus dilemma

I was in two minds whether to post this into the health and wellness thread instead...

I was gifted a new iPhone 6s and iPad SURPLUS stock.

Not for wanting to show a lack of appreciation for the kind gesture, I have decided to pass the Apple devices on to my mother-in-law during the festive season despite my own tech prejudice.

She needs a new phone and a tablet to casually flick around with.

As a Tax Accountant, she loves Windows 10 and Microsoft Office but has failed to understand the empowering benefits of synchronised platform synergy available with Windows 10 today.

As Microsoft progressively strengthens its stride into the Apple iOS and Google Android worlds with its "any device" ambitions, I suppose it may become a redundant argument for those who still prefer the Apple iOS bling to the Microsoft Surface and Lumia supremes.

Am I being kind or cruel?

    Re: Apple Surplus dilemma

I'm thinking about a Surface (Pro 4?) for myself. I have both Apple and Windows products (desktops and servers) but confess to mainly using my MacBook Pro and iPad almost exclusively. We are firmly locked into Windows pc's at work. All my home computer gear is getting long in the tooth and I'm wrestling with what to upgrade/replace first.

Joe... I just deployed a Microsoft Surface Book for my colleague after running it through some critical evaluation. Part of that evaluation included some cool stuff like hooking it up to iFI and McIntosh audio rigs, mirror-casting to home theatre, running 3 extended displays while the book was flipped onto the desk and used as a A4 OneNote scribble pad. The machine was an i7/512GB SSD/16GB tethered to its docking station and when that GPU kicks in, it is beastly.

I was overly impressed and will be getting the 1TB SSD version when it lands here soon.

Similarly, I have been playing with the new Lumia 950XL along with a Microsoft Band 2 and love them both.

A Surface Pro 3 is currently my main workhorse. During the day, I dock it to a 27" touch screen. At night, it is the be all tablet. It is a charm to carry around and fly with too.

Personally I am not looking back. Windows 10 is a "just go with it" world for me now and I cannot envisage deploying any new Apple devices from here on.

I do appreciate however, that tech prejudice can be a touchy/coveting subject and letting go can be a sticky business for some.

I guess it is what you get used to. I spent about 20 minutes last week at one of those Microsoft Store/Pop-Ups at the mall playing with the Surface Pro 4 and the Surface Book. I walked away thinking "why" would I ever go back to Windows?

    Apple Surplus dilemma

Personal choice. I'm so use to Apple products that must work, I don't even think of switching. Admittedly, Steve Jobs leaving this planet has left a gigantic hole in Apple. The stock price is sinking fast. Their new products have failed to excite. The past year or two of advancements in the iPhone have been meh.

    Re: Apple Surplus dilemma

As a child, Apple inspired with form and function and to this day I hold onto vintage Apple nostalgia. Jobs transcended Apple in many respects. Perhaps if Apple reinvested its bank, they could reinvigorate the spark to propel themselves and the industry further again.

Competitive choice is good and a driver of innovation. There is no doubt that the market shares are now shifting away from Apple and its firsts.

On the iPhone side I am waiting for the updated 5S sized phone that should come out next year. The 6s and 6s+ are too big.

    Re: Apple Surplus dilemma

I'm with Mike in that I believe it's all about personal preference. I've used Apple products for the past 30 years, have a laptop that runs Windows 7 (that I love), and use an Android-based phone. Apparently there are plenty of people who like to have everything accessible on whatever platform they choose, I'm just not one of them and never will be.
