Are you sure that you are not confusing upscaling and streaming? Room can upscale anything to DSD512 if you want to, but the stream file is a lower resolution like 44.1, DSD64, 192 etc.

As far as I understand it, Roon can handle native DSD512.

Ok! I have never seen native DSD512 myself. Did not know it existed for streaming. Where can you get that from?

Re: Roon: everything you need to know ...

    It may all be semantics.
Roon can take a lower resolution file (44.1, 96, 192, DSD64) and upsample it to PCM353 or DSD512 for your DAC to decode. But I am not aware of any music service streaming at DSD512 (or PCM353).

Re: Roon: everything you need to know ...

You can buy DSD512 files online and play them from your local hard drive. I am not aware of anywhere you can stream them online. The bandwidth needed would be HUGE.

i am not aware of any service that streams DSD at all.

You have to either rip SACDs to a local file or buy them online. They are available among other places, from HD Tracks and NativeDSD.

Roon up-sampling should be turned off for best sonics IMO

Any up-sampling on any piece (dCS) doesn't sound real at all. Native is where its at......

And yes DSD512 is from files.....

Exactly. There is no service that streams DSD at all, at any resolution. There are, however, a handful of DSD256 and DSD512 downloads available. When I say Roon can handle DSD512 natively, I mean you can download the DSD512 file to your hard drive and Roon will play it without having to upsample it.

Are these files actually recorded at DSD512 or are they native PCM 16/44.1 files that have been upsampled and converted to DSD? If the files truly were recorded at DSD512, are there any artists that anyone has heard from outside of their parents?

The only DSD512 download I'm aware of is Vanessa Fernandez's latest album, which was upsampled from the DSD64 master tape and made available as a DSD512 download: https://groovenote.nativedsd.com/alb...200-i-want-you

EDIT: Actually, GrooveNote has several DSD512 downloads available, most of which are in the classical genre: https://www.nativedsd.com/homepage/dsd512_music

So this outstanding example of music we all love to listen to is upsampled from DSD64. Again, I doubt there are many true native DSD512 files.

Pretty much. In this case, the question comes down to would you rather have GrooveNote do the upsampling before you download the file or would you rather have your Roon core or DAC upsample the DSD64 download.

It's a moot point since I own the PS Audio DSJ DAC.

I am only aware of DSD512 files being available from NativeDSD. They say they have 98 albums. I have no idea how they were recorded.

Just went to their website. They say their albums were either recorded originally as DSD files or they were recorded from analog tape.

Re: Roon: everything you need to know ...

Here are the Tech Specs on one of the new DSD512 albums at NativeDSD:

"We are pleased to announce the availability of Groove Note releases in DSD 128, DSD 256, and DSD 512 in addition to the original DSD 64 releases. These higher bit rate DSD 128, DSD 256, and DSD 512 releases are all pure DSD created. They are not up samplings, for there are no PCM or DXD conversions involved in their production. They are re-modulations of the original DSD 64 encoding modulation that produced the DSD 64 releases. The sonic advantage to these new Stereo DSD 128, DSD 256, and DSD 512 releases, as with all higher DSD bit rate releases, is the wider frequency passband prior to the onset of modulation noise. This results in the listener’s DAC using gentler and more phase linear filters for playback of the music."

I had a fairly extensive conversation with David Elias. David is a pioneer in both DSD recording and also a big supporter of MQA for streaming and portable use. He emphasized that these DSD512 albums are not simple up samples but true re-modulations 100% in the DSD domain. I admit to not totally understanding the entire process but I can say that they are amazing sounding and very nice improvements.

I have David's 5 original DSD recorded albums and 4 that have been reworked to DSD512. I believe they are fairly nice improvements. I also have 2 Vanessa Fernandez albums and a Jacintha album. All are wonderful sounding and some of the best digital I have ever heard. If you have the DAC capable of playing DSD512 you would be doing yourself a favor trying some of these.

I have played these using straight Roon decoding and through HQPlayer. They are very close but I feel the HQPlayer playback engine is ever so slightly better. Of course Roon is the meta data/controlling software being used and feeding HQPlayer in my setup.
