Re: Lumin Network Audiophile Music Player

I definitely don't understand it exactly, but when iTunes goes out and gets artwork, it doesn't put that artwork embedded in the music file or even in it's folder but it sets up a different index all together. So most programs other than iTunes never sees the artwork.

OK. I downloaded Image Fetch but it won't scan my library on the Synology NAS (I have both music files and metadata in the NAS). It looks like it will only scan a library on a local hard drive. And indeed when I download Image Fetch to another computer with a different iTunes library than my main one it will scan it and find all the album art files.

So it appears that Image Fetch needs to be installed on the Synology. The only way I'ver ever downloaded a program to the Synology is by using the "Package Center" program on it. Tried to upload it from my MacBook but it says "Invalid File Format"

    Suggestions??

    Not really.

In my situation, I had my music collection on my main computer in iTunes and also on my NAS, so I ran it on my computer and then recopied it to my NAS.

    Sorry.

Has anyone had any experience with the LUMIN, as just a DAC, being fed by a good transport, for playing back just REDBK? (IE: Not using it to stream music from the internet, etc. )

MRJAZZ - welcome to audioshark. I don't think I understand your question. The main feature of the Lumin isn't to stream music from internet - it's to receive packets of data via Ethernet from your NAS. And, the Lumin doesn't have any digital or analog inputs. It does have a BNC output to go to a external DAC - but I'm not sure why you would want to. The DAC chipset in the Lumin is world class IMO.

Mike, I think what MRJAZZ is saying is that he wants to add the Lumin to his system but the CD player he has is very pleasing to him as well, or that he would prefer not to part with it. Can he run it through the Lumin & is it worth it. MRJAZZ, what redbook player are you talking about??

The answer is no, he cannot. I have to wonder why you would (other than to use the Lumin DAC).

To me, it's sort of like asking if you can put your bike inside your car and ride it. Rip those darn CD's and stream baby stream! You'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

I've got a Synology NAS that's been feeding my dedicated MacMini. I recently managed to get Minimserver and Java installed on it (without even getting my IT guy's help!) and I've been playing around with a Sonore Rendu streamer (ethernet-->SPDIF) using the PlugPay iPad app as the control point.

Only about a third of my album artwork shows up in PlugPlayer. I downloaded the Lumin app just to see how it looks--much better than PulgPlayer. Scanned my library and same thing--lots of artwork missing.

From what I gather these programs first look for artwork in JPEG format embedded within the audio file. Then it's kind of murky to me as to what the program does next to try to find artwork.

Part of what's keeping me with iTunes and away from a server/renderer is this whole issue with music files and album art. I'm basically lazy when it comes to managing my files/metadata and don't want to have to spend time messing around with them.

So the question is...how can I (EASILY!) get things in order on my NAS with MinimServer so everything shows up as it should using these control point programs? What needs to be done when ripping/downloading new music?
BTW...I solved this issue with album art. Found a "Doug's AppleScript" that works through iTunes to create a JPG file of the album art in the music track's file -- in my case, located on my Synology NAS, where I also have Minimserver installed. So now all of my artwork shows up on the Lumin iPad app.

Here is the link to the script for anybody interested:

Thanks. I'll certainly report back. Curious to see how it compares to my other main front ends: dedicated Mac mini-->Berkeley alpha USB-->Berkeley alpha DAC and also a Sonore Rendu feeding the Berkeley via SPDIF.

As others have mentioned, having a "one box" unit as elegant as this and where the designers have tried to optimize then entire ethernet-->DAC chain for maximum performance has it's appeal.

And I really like the Lumin app/interface.

I agree completely, Mike. After hearing an appropriately ripped cd through a good streamer like the Linn or Lumin (I want to hear it badly), I can't imagine going back.

To be entirely honest, I've yet to hear a sub-$10k streaming device that could go toe to toe with my dedicated CD-player (the AMR CD-777). That said, I'd love to check out the Lumin. The unit has certainly earned it's fair share of bad-ass credentials in these parts.

You should try an Aurender into the AMR (if it has the input). It's the first digital transport I've used that betters my Esoteric K-01 (when connected to the K-01).

The Lumin A1 is definitely better than the Naim NDX.

I have a Naim NDS that I'm selling that was replaced by the Lumin.

In my system the Lunin worked better for me.

how would you, describe the difference, between lumin/naim. better soundstage/more open/midrange etc...

A little more detail but just as musical. The Lumin is in the middle between the Linn Klimax and NDS.

Bottom line - Naim works best with Naim systems. They do so many things to maximize the synergy in their own systems, they just don't play as well with other manufacturers.

    the professor,

thanks, definitely will have to do a demo, was originally looking at the Naim (ndx) streamers. but now, will have to check out the lumin.

glad to hear, that you actually own both, and that you compared, and can give feedback on naim/lumin.

    that really helps...

I actually had the Klimax and the NDS and have replaced both with Lunins.

I liked the Klinax going into the D'Agostino preamp but liked the NDS into the Accuphase.

    Dear All,

I'm a new comer here from Hong Kong, just to say HI to everyone!
Very happy to see many Lumin's user here, actually the A1 is a very very good music player!
I'm now using my handcrafted LPS to feed my A1, also with my hand braided DC connecting cable, and I brought a Shunyata Research Alpha Digital Powercord for it, the result is amazing! Very very good!

    Best regards,
    Kenneth Lau

    Lumin Network Audiophile Music Player

Guys, my Kenneth Lau Power Supply arrived yesterday and has been going non-stop. I have noticed a tightening of bass, meatier mids and a wider soundstage. Definitely a nice upgrade.

    Thanks Ken!

I like that the Lau PSU is larger. My stock one does a wheelie from the power cable pulling on the back of it .
