    Lumin or Linn?

I've cancelled my Amazon order for the Sony after Allen found out that you can't stream from a NAS. So, I'm looking at a streamer now - either a Lumin or Linn Akurate DS. Does anyone here have experience with the Lumin? I have heard the Akurate several times and its terrific. But I'm curious how the Lumin would compare to it.

Mark....you don't need to answer my post! LOL! I know your response!!

Being self serving -- Personally I think you should get the Lumin so that we can see what you think of it and how it compares to your Meitner.

    Re: Lumin or Linn?

Jock - that's not a bad idea. Maybe I should buy the Lumin and if you can send me your Klimax, I can do a comparison. Then I will send BOTH back to you so you can compare them too.

I question this move considering you already have the (albeit basic) best method for digital playback.

    Re: Lumin or Linn?

From what I read, the Lumin is best used as a streamer only, bypassing the internal DAC, and going with an external one. In your case, the Meitner.

BUT, apparently DSD is not possible on on the digital outs. That was my big turnoff. Hopefully they'll work on a software update for that...

E - I've been debating this for a long time. Every time I hear a Linn, it just sounds so musical. The folks in Europe are much more on the streamer side than the DAC side - or so it seems.

I guess the only way to know for sure is to compare them head to head in my system.

    Re: Lumin or Linn?

Focus on a DAC. The Meitner is fine, but seems like it would play nicest in a purely DSD environment (no transcoding in either direction). Perhaps look for a really solid redbook and hi-rez DAC.

Even though your CAPS is problematic/basic (compared to, say, the eSilentPC), it still beats the hell out of any other type of streaming/media server from any of these OEMs.

Just tryin' to save you from incinerating money chasing that pink audio dragon, bro.

    Re: Lumin or Linn?

    It is an interesting article.

Sometimes over time having totally separate devices are best. Such as: pre and power amps.

10-15 years ago the "in thing" was separate cd transports and DACs. Welllll, then after some years, the industry tended to go back to all in one CD players as the best sounding. Then came "computer music" and the DAC had a new found purpose and it was the industry best. The same manufacturers that led the CD/DAC all in one box seem to be going with the all in one box streamer solution. Is it better???? Do they know something???? Or are they just hoping to be right twice???

I have NO clue. That's why you just have to explore everything and keep an open mind.

Start of Rant: ------------ BUT what I do know is that just because somebody makes something sound better - it doesn't make what you have sound bad and/or any different. A great sounding system that sounded good 20 years ago sounds good now and will sound good 20 years from now. I have some recordings that are just magnificent that were recorded in the fifty's. How can that be???? ------- end of rant.

    Re: Lumin or Linn?

You're exactly right Jock. It doesn't make it bad. R2R 30 years ago still sounds great today. Same for vinyl. Digital is getting there.

On another note, Mark and I were talking tonight and the new EAR DACute 4 looks very interesting. Combined with the Lumin as the streamer (connected via BNC) might be an interesting combo. Both do DSD - one natively (Lumin) and one via DoP.

May just start with the EAR and go back to my MBP. Windows gives me a migraine.

Could be a nice and clean 2 box for 1 swap while upgrading my digital. Have to make sure that it works well with my phono set-up (i.e., not too much gain and low noise floor). Cool. Thx for the info.

The only bummer I saw in the specs is that it does not do DSD natively (like your MA-1). It does DSD over PCM which is not ideal. Apparently there is a transport that does CD and SACD as well that you can mate with the DACute 4, so in this instance you could play your SACDs via the transport and output DSD (again over PCM) to the DAC I am assuming via the AcuteLink input on the DAC. Thx for the info again!

PS: By the way, any sense on pricing? The DACute 3 I believe was $6,595 in chrome finish and $5,895 in black finish. Is it roughly same or bumped up? Also, not clear from specs if the USB is asynchronous or not.

Mike...thx for pic. Come to think of it, the DACute4 and its associated transport was shown at one of the recent audio shows. I remember commenting on it here or maybe at the other forum a while back. I am going to see if I can dig up the show report on it. Thx

Nothing that blatantly wrong with Win7, and certainly bests any MacOS flavor. I could understand the argument back in the ME/XP/Vista days versus MacOS - but now, no.

Not to mention the hardware available for Win (or hackintosh) builds far exceeds anything Apple can get their hands on.

Oh man, here we go again. Windows is a disaster now. XP was the last good Windows OS.

Computers today aren't about who has the fastest CPU. They are all fast. What it comes down to is usability, reliability and the overall experience.

The explosion of Mac is because people got sick of the geek speak and just wanted to use the computer and have it work every time for what they wanted to do and not have to worry about bugs and viruses.

I do really like Office (for Mac) however. Apple's office equivalent can't touch it.

HELP : no WIRED access to my network from my listening place!

Well, Since I have no WIRED access to my network from my listening place (in other words, my wife will not allow for an Ethernet cable across the living-room :-), I am more interested in the AURENDER (local storage) and the LUMIN (it now can play directly from a USB Drive/stick): With booth Music servers, I don't need ethernet access to a NAS !

    But ...
    - If the SERVER cannot be connected to my Network, how can I use the Ipad to control the Server and select the files to be played ?
    - In the case of the LUMIN, is the playback from USB Drive/stick as good as when streaming the NAS through Ethernet ?

So... what is the solution for me ?

    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to AS!

I'm assuming you want to use a streamer. Naim's NDX and other streamers can be done by WIFI and works quite well.

    Lumin or Linn?

Bertrand - you need a wired network connection tied into the same network that your iPad accesses wirelessly.

I would at least ask a low voltage specialist if your room can be wired. I was convinced our family room couldn't be done, but they managed it. The Lumin is worth the effort IMO.

Failing that, Jocks suggestion sounds like a good one. Naim.

    Re: Lumin or Linn?

Come to think about it - what about an Apple Airport Express? Plug the Lumin into the Express - the Apple Express connects wirelessly to the wireless network (recommend the Apple AirPort Extreme). This might work? Not sure. I would ask the folks at Lumin.

Maybe I've had too many Christmas drinks! But I think this may work....
