Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON

Like many, I'm looking forward to this release. As a lifetime subscriber for many years now, it has certainly paid off and I enjoy it daily. One of the few software companies that get it right IMO. Hopefully this release will be the same!

Thanks for sharing. The redesign of the interface adds a more modern look. Nice to see that Roon is making Focus a lot easier to use. I use Focus all the time. IMO it is the most powerful music management tool available and a big differentiator.

The lifetime Roon membership that I purchased a few years ago is one of the best investments in audio that I have made. I realize that this is a niche market, but I would not be surprised if at some point, a bigger company decides to purchase Roon.

The best for searching and finding music and researching.

Curious if any improvements sonically have been made.

Roon Radio is my favorite feature. It has helped me to find lots of new music through Qobuz. I’m hopeful the next release will make RR even better.

I don't spend much time on the Roon forums, but if Roon's efforts in this area are guided at all by the threads I have read, sonics aren't going to be a major point of emphasis moving forward. Seems the prevailing wisdom is that bits are bits.

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON

Supposed to be a tidbit release a day for several days. I do hope they do mention SQ at some point, although I am pretty happy with it myself, with my ethernet streaming system.

Edit - I see the "bits are bits" comment, and while I agree for the most part, many have had better sonics with other systems, and one can use HQPlayer if one sees fit.

The only new feature that interests me is the vertical scrolling. Otherwise I will continue to find music as I currently do, scrolling for an album. I hope these features satisfy others needs.

I agree Jim, then again I don't use a lot of those type of features. I usual scroll through artist/albums. Since I use Surface tablet as my controller the vertical scrolling might be nice.

I have always felt Roon SQ was very good, but I have been more impressed with the interface and meta-data. I use HQPlayer as my playback engine with Roon. The best of both worlds ...

Newest teaser today about advanced music recommendation feature. Sounds cool, of course, won't know till I try to use it if it is worth while.

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON

Roon's CTO explained how Valance works in the new 1.8 version in relation to classical music. Here is what he wrote:

"We wanted people to have a way to explore classical music that does not depend on them already being an expert. I think there are many potential lovers of classical music out there who are missing out because it’s just so difficult to explore that world incrementally.

Start with a composer and listen to the most popular recording each of their most popular compositions, and you’ll have a really great experience. Then you can decide whether to dig into a particular form (e.g. Symphony, Waltz, Concerto), digest their whole catalog, move onto a related composer, or explore an interesting musician or ensemble that you discovered during that listening decision.

Start with a genre like Opera and immediately get an overview of the most important operas, vocalists, conductors, and composers, and then start developing your own taste and opinions while listening to that stuff.

You’re going to find things you like and want to dig in, and the stuff you don’t like will become a reference point to help you understand that composer, time period or musical form for the future. We’ve put a lot of work into making sure the information is presented clearly and not in an overwhelming way, and that the best content is brought forward."

    He also said:

... this all works on content from streaming services [Qobuz, Tidal]. You do not need a classical library of your own to have this experience.

    Plus...

"Previously, we tried find a framework that fit all kinds of music, and we jammed everything into it. This caused classical to suffer quite a bit, and didn’t serve other genres so well either. We had some very “deep cut” classical features like allowing to sort by composer catalog numbers, but we were missing basics like letting you see your Beethoven albums. It was really in disarray.

In 1.8, we have shifted to treating classical music like its own use case and we’re respecting it directly. This manifests in dozens of small and large ways in the product. Once we gave ourselves permission to build classical-specific features for classical artists, composers, albums, genres, and compositions, it gave us the tools to overcome many of the old problems and also do some interesting new stuff."

I used to be a folder view lover. I was skeptical when I switched to Roon.

Roon from the get go did not support folder view.

Truth is, I do not miss folder view. Today, folder view seems archaic to me.

There is a post which talks about sound quality improvements but not sure if its coming from Roon...it would be nice if it did.

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON

I can't get thru to the Roon Community forum. Must be overloaded. In 1.8 I am getting easy fewer albums to display on both my laptop and iPad. There has go to be a way to get back to the number you could see at once in 1.7 and older. Thumb s down so far 'till I get help.

I am now able to log into the Room Community. Waiting to see how to adjust the number of albums that are displayed.

My Intel Roc froze during the update. All I get now is "No Pathway Found"...Code 502....
Tried rebooting my Roc several times .. no luck. Tried to download new Roon App from their Home Page...nothing.. same message comes up...
    Any thoughts?

First did you update your "control devices" iPad etc before trying to update Roon itself?

I just went into Roon after I updated my IOS devices and was able to initiate the update without issues. I went back a couple of minutes later and I could see both my laptop and my sonic transporter where my Roon resides updating on a progress bar.

updated iOS device, then core, and then the macOS app -- went without a hitch and everything functioning normally...

but, the jury is still out on the UI. it is going to take some time to get used to it.

I did the same and the upgrade went smooth as silk. Now have Roon 1.8 on my Core CPU, as well as functioning as a remote on the MacBook Pro, and also on both the iPhone 12 Mini and iPad. 👍

Love the new interface, and....playlists are now also veiwable in Portrait orientation, which is great when using the iPad.

Some of the new features e.g. depicting recommendations and usage characteristics are pretty cool, also.

So far the update is a giant waste for me. The first response was there is no adjustment for the number of albums displayed. Now I have also found that I can no longer see the "abc" option at the bottom of the page to elect jumping to any letter in the alphabet to search for the artist I want to play. So far this sucks.

We listened, upgraded, listened again. Can’t say we agree. More veiled sounding to us. Love the new Interface though.

I do not hear any obvious differences in SQ.

I just uploaded Roon 1.8. It sounds truly wonderful. No glitches so far. I’ll comment on the updated interface once I’ve had the opportunity to become familiar with it.

No surprise really. Those are all subjective statements or opinions.

Roon Labs has said nothing about SQ.
Roon Labs keeps has proved that it will deliver bit-perfect data to your DAC. And that is perfectly fine with me.
