Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
One thing about 1.8 that is a very nice change, they made it much easier to compare playing Roon directly versus HQPlayer. It used to be finicky and not easy. Now it is a piece of cake.
While Roon is very good up-sampling to DSD512 HQPlayer is better to my ears. It seems more noticeably better now but that may very well be that it is so much easier to switch back and forth.McIntosh C49, MC152, MR85, R778 | T+A DAC 8 DSD | KEF LS50 Meta w/S2, KC62 (x2) | Rega RP8, Ania Pro, NEO PSU | Technics SL-1500C | Audio Technica VM750ML | Hexmat Eclipse, Yellow Bird, Molekula, Molekula Mini | Pro-Ject VC-E | Falcon NW PC Server (Roon Core & HQPlayer) | Microsoft Surface Pro 6 (Roon Controller) | Wyred 4 Sound ISO Recovery, DC Recovery | Abyss Diana Phi | Schiit Jotunheim 2 | Astell&Kern SE200 | Oppo BDP105

AEdgy and fatiguing?......interesting.....I’ve always found Roon, in all it’s incarnations to be somewhat soft and laid back, to varying degrees....Some might find it a bit veiled.....I personally like the overall presentation, and don’t remotely find it fatiguing or edgy.....Not at all suggesting that’s not what you observed.....Just wondering if something else might be contributing to that observation......
Anyway, enjoy the music, regardless of what format it comes from......
Cheers.....

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
I think this leads to the question, how does Roon 1.8 sound through the Nucleus Plus compared to the Taiko Extreme? Since Mike has both, perhaps he will comment. We know the Taiko Extreme sounds top notch with its own software.

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
I don't really see how this is an apples to apples comparison. You are trying to compare a $2.5k device only meant to run Roon core in conjunction to other streaming devices versus a $35k premium server designed for a very different purpose and software (OS and TAS) specifically tuned to run on a very specific hardware (Extreme). Forget TAS, even Roon will perform better on Extreme than Nucleus+. There are many servers which sounds better with their own software and that is not really surprising.

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
So, for all the past days I have been listening to 1.8, the more I am realizing a very positive experience with the overall sound. This is on a Windows based server. I am yet to update my Linux builds but I am hopeful.

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
There were issues, at least initially, with Roon 1.8’s performance on TAS, leading some to say that Roon 1.8’s sound quality was not too good. However, on the Roon Nucleus Plus, many said Roon 1.8’s sound quality was as good or better than before. That’s why this is a relevant discussion.

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
I always felt that Roon sounded very good on its own, but being able to directly compare to HQPlayer was a bit of an eye opener. With prior versions I thought HQPlayer was better but it was cumbersome to directly compare and therefore the comparisons I always felt were a bit compromised since the switch back and forth was not always smooth. With 1.8 the switch is quick, easy and smooth allowing for true direct comparisons.
During this comparison at first I felt that Roon might be so close that using HQPlayer might no longer be needed. But with more comparisons it became obvious that HQPlayer was smoother with more air, more definition of individual instruments. I felt that Roon was a tad edgy in comparison to HQPlayer. But it was very close and probably both acceptable.
I did the comparison using my Moon NEO 430HA headphone amp and my Abyss Diana Phi headphones so I felt it was a completely fair and honest comparison. I feel 1.8 is fantastic and allowed the tremendous playback engine of HQPlayer to really shine!McIntosh C49, MC152, MR85, R778 | T+A DAC 8 DSD | KEF LS50 Meta w/S2, KC62 (x2) | Rega RP8, Ania Pro, NEO PSU | Technics SL-1500C | Audio Technica VM750ML | Hexmat Eclipse, Yellow Bird, Molekula, Molekula Mini | Pro-Ject VC-E | Falcon NW PC Server (Roon Core & HQPlayer) | Microsoft Surface Pro 6 (Roon Controller) | Wyred 4 Sound ISO Recovery, DC Recovery | Abyss Diana Phi | Schiit Jotunheim 2 | Astell&Kern SE200 | Oppo BDP105

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
Just to clarity, TAS is Taiko’s audio software. On the Extreme, Roon doesn’t run on TAS. Extreme owners have the ability to listen to TAS or Roon.
Assuming you meant running Roon on the Extreme, the Taiko support team tweaks the settings in the Extreme in order to maximize the audio quality of Roon. I would assume that Roon on an Extreme would sound much better than Roon on a Roon Nucleus but that is just my guess.Speakers: Vandersteen Model 7 XTRM, 4 M&K ST-150Ts, 1 VCC-5; Amplification: 2 Vandersteen M7-HPAs, CI Audio D200 MKII, Ayre V-6xe; Preamp: Doshi Audio Line Stage v3.0; Phono Pre: Doshi Audio Phono Pre; Analog: Wave Kinetics NVS with Durand Tosca arm; SME 3012R arm, Ortofon Diamond Anna; Reel to Reel: Technics RS-1500; Doshi Tape Pre-Amp; Studer A810, Studer A812, Tascam BR-20; Multi-channel: Bryston SP-3; Digital: Taiko Audio Extreme> Lampizator Horizon, Oppo UDP-203;

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
But again, it requires hardware that could run to $30,000 to use... I assume if you are developing your own software for a $30,000 piece of gear it had better be something pretty special. For 99% of Roon users weather 1.8 sounds better or worse on the Extreme is really not a consideration. Does it sound better or worse on a vast majority of the customers systems is what actually matters, and the consensus that I am seeing is it does.

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
I think the question was more of did Roon 1.8 sounded better or worse or same than 1.7 on the same environment (OS and hardware). In order to get a realistic answer if Roon sounded better or worse in Extreme vs Nucleus+, you need to test it in the same environment, meaning in Extreme you need to run further optimized Rock or on Nucleus+ you need to run the version of Windows that runs on Extreme - both the options aren’t possible.
I can’t stress the importance of any audio application running in an optimized environment will always yield better result. You can’t judge Roon alone. Similarly you can’t run TAS (assuming you can) on any other hardware and expect it to perform equally as Extreme, heck they have even improve the USB chipset driver for many DACs to work with TAS better. They have further optimized Windows to mitigate the bad sound quality of Roon. I would give a nod to Roon in that they have more challenges than others since they need to run a wide variety of hardware and operating environment. Similar to Windows versus OSX. So an improvement in sound in 1.8 is really a big win for many. On a better hardware, better power supply, and a tuned OS/environment, any audio software is bound to sound good.

Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
If you have not yet updated to 1.8 and if you are a user of the bookmarks function, you may want to hold off upgrading to 1.8 until Roon releases a fix. Right now, the bookmarks function is not working properly. Roon Labs is supposed to be working on a fix.

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
I guess my point was that for most people it is irrelevant if it sounds better or worse on the Extreme. The question is does it sound better, the same, or worse on gear that they might actually use. It was not so much directed at you as it is directed at comparing Roon in regards to the Extreme.

Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
I don’t get it. Why shouldn’t Roon on Extreme be talked about? Even if we have only one Extreme owner, it’s still legit to talk about it. If you don’t have Extreme or aren’t interested, well, maybe...don’t comment on it?

I think it’s a bit of a horses for courses confusion here. While some people talk about a Roon update, others talk about a custom platform not being able to accommodate the SW changes properly.

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
I totally agree with you. The folks who own the Taiko Extreme will not be using Roon on it because as they’ve pointed out time and time again, the Taiko software sounds far superior to the Roon software on the Taiko Extreme. The fact is Roon 1.8 sounds from as good as to significantly better than Roon 1.7 on devices that will actually be using Roon 1.8. The fact that Roon 1.8 sounds worse than Roon 1.7 on the Taiko Extreme is a moot point as far as I’m concerned.
I am enjoying significantly improved sound quality with Roon 1.8 on my Roon Nucleus Plus. The soundstage appears bigger with imaging more holographic. And the functionality of the Roon interface continues to be one of the best.

Settings -> setup -> Add HQPlayer
If you are running HQP on the local machine, type localhost (or ip address 127.0.0.1). If you running it somewhere else, enter the ip address of the system.
On Windows you will use the HQP 4 desktop and on Linux you can only use HQP 4 embedded. Both priced same but you can't use one license with the other.

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
Ken, while that may ultimately be true, currently TAS lacks a lot of the functionality that Roon has above an beyond the information that Roon brings to the user. For example, TAS playback is not yet fully gapless. For some music that is not ideal. In addition, there are certain playback options which have not yet been released for TAS.
Again, I expect TAS will have all this functionality eventually but right now there are many Extreme owners who plan on listening to music via Roon so the quality of each update is still very important.Speakers: Vandersteen Model 7 XTRM, 4 M&K ST-150Ts, 1 VCC-5; Amplification: 2 Vandersteen M7-HPAs, CI Audio D200 MKII, Ayre V-6xe; Preamp: Doshi Audio Line Stage v3.0; Phono Pre: Doshi Audio Phono Pre; Analog: Wave Kinetics NVS with Durand Tosca arm; SME 3012R arm, Ortofon Diamond Anna; Reel to Reel: Technics RS-1500; Doshi Tape Pre-Amp; Studer A810, Studer A812, Tascam BR-20; Multi-channel: Bryston SP-3; Digital: Taiko Audio Extreme> Lampizator Horizon, Oppo UDP-203;

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
I believe gapless playback is primarily meant between songs, otherwise having pause between songs in Pink Floyd albums is just not acceptable
However, there is no reason why it can’t be extended between Albums - from one album to the next, it’s basically one song to the next. if you queue two or more albums in Roon, it’s gapless end-to-end.

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
Normally HQPlayer would run on your server along with Roon Core. It can be played by itself but the playback interface is not great. You setup the drivers, filters, and if you want to over sample in HQPlayer.
In Roon HQPlayer would be another zone or audio source (not sure what they are calling it now). In essence Roon is your controller and meta data provider. Roon Core runs on the server for library functions and choosing storage locations (folders on the server, NAS, external drives, Tidal, etc.). Roon hands the signal off to HQPlayer by choosing it as your zone and HQPlayer is then the actual playback engine.
So Roon Core and HQPlayer run on your server and Roon Controller runs on your controller device; iPad, computer, tablet, etc. For me it is a Surface tablet.McIntosh C49, MC152, MR85, R778 | T+A DAC 8 DSD | KEF LS50 Meta w/S2, KC62 (x2) | Rega RP8, Ania Pro, NEO PSU | Technics SL-1500C | Audio Technica VM750ML | Hexmat Eclipse, Yellow Bird, Molekula, Molekula Mini | Pro-Ject VC-E | Falcon NW PC Server (Roon Core & HQPlayer) | Microsoft Surface Pro 6 (Roon Controller) | Wyred 4 Sound ISO Recovery, DC Recovery | Abyss Diana Phi | Schiit Jotunheim 2 | Astell&Kern SE200 | Oppo BDP105

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
That is how I always heard that it works, and how it works for me. It is the actual playback engine, what is actually playing the digital files and therefore should interact directly with them. Roon organizes the files, searched out the files, shows the meta data, and tells HQPlayer what to play, but HQPlayer actually plays them. Hopefully that makes sense and does not make it more confusing.

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
Hi King,
This surprises me. You are still using Roon, even when TAS sounds so clearly superior on the Taiko Extreme? Is the functionality of the TAS interface really that bad? What specifically is wrong with it or would need to be improved in order for you to use it? Also, do you use HQPlayer as an add-on in Roon?
Thanks,

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
Thanks, Randy. It makes sense from a high-level functional overview, but what I need to figure out is how to actually configure what software, what way, to get it to work. I've looked at Audiophile Style and some other places for a protocol, but have not found any clear, step-by-step protocol, other than the one for Sonore's Rendu products, which don't apply in my case. Cheers.

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
Yesterday, Roon released an update to fix several of the issues that users complained about. I just updated my core and my devices.
Here is a list of the fixes/improvements (per Roon Labs):
Improvements and Bug Fixes for Build 763:
Fixed missing audio zones in some conditions
Add/Remove Tag functionality restored
Playlist and Tag links available on Album screen (enable on Settings > General)
Shuffle playback in browsers selects from your entire library
New “Customize Album Display” options:
Star rating
MQA badge
Album display settings now used across the app including TIDAL, Qobuz, Genre pages, etc
‘Export’ option restored to Playlists when applicable
Focus: fixed some cases where ‘View More’ wouldn’t be shown
Updated treatment of ‘In library’ button on Search results
Bigger “hit areas” for touch:
Queue button in footer
Scrollbars on iOS
Playlist item drag handles
Now Playing:
Fixed spacing and layout of Star rating and streaming services badges
Removed UI artifact when Now Playing is empty on mobile
Album screen includes clearer treatment when navigating to “focused” track list from Credits tab
Fixed icon alignment for tracks on many screens
Fixed overlapping scrollbars in some dialogs
Fixed failure to load content after clicking link in reviews and bios
Fixed crash opening artist browser when malformed unicode is present
Fixed a bug where different ‘Member of’ links would redirect to the same person
Fixed absence of hamburger menu on large-format tablets
Updated treatment for tags on Composition screen
Fixed issue with multiple external source controls on Volume popup
What’s Next
We’re still reading everyone’s feedback and looking forward to releasing additional changes over the next few weeks, including options to display larger text, and expanding Focus to support powerful, customizable filtering including AND/OR options.
Once these changes are implemented, any bookmarks that predate Roon 1.8 should work as they did before, so thanks for everyone’s patience on this!"

I found the version before the fix quite slow. Now it seems to be normal again.

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
Does Roon still recommend that one updates their Smart Devices that control Roon first, than the Core?

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
I installed 1.8 on my iPad and Nucleus+ on Monday. The update went super fast. I haven’t warmed up to the new GUI yet as I really liked the previous version. As for SQ, it certainly didn’t take a step backward. I think any SQ improvements are more subtle than they are big improvements. I’m hedging on the SQ changes a bit because I need to spend more time listening to get a good handle on the changes I’m hearing with 1.8.

Re: Introducing Roon 1.8 - COMING SOON
For those who may not know, there is a major issue with Roon 1.8 running on some flavors of Linux (probably relying on ZFS), such as my Mojo Audio DejaVu Evo.
The issue prevents access to the local music library and makes music replay impossible for those not using a NAS/streaming.
Roon has reproduced the issue but has been unable to fix it after an incredibly long month. I and other perpetual license owners have been extremely disappointed by the way Roon has been handling this issue.
