How to NAS?
Use a Vitus built in streamer/DAC. Mconnect HD interface.
Orbi router has no USB, but I have a second NetGear router which does.
Want to play music files off of a HD.
What is the simplest was to implement such?

Roon.
Buy a Roon rock from them, or buy a suitable standard intel NUC (the Roon website will tell you what to buy). Take out an annual Roon subscription. Plug the NUC into your network. Plug the NUCs usb out into you DAC and you are done.
Roon will find your DAC and all the files on your network, inc anything on a NAS and sort everything out for you. Then you can use your phone, or tablet, or computer as a remote control for Roon.
Simples.

Since you already have your music in a USB hard drive, you should consider something like the Sony HAP-Z1ES Hi-Res Audio Player. It comes with its own built-in DAC and 1TB of storage. You can just connect your hard drive via USB and you are done. Also you would not need to subscribe to Roon or to a music service (although it supports Spotify if you have it).

If what you want to do is to play music from your USB hard drive, then you do not need a Roon-ready device. Originally Posted by Smile

PS. Your OP did not mention Roon, so I assumed that you are looking for "What is the simplest was to implement such?"
But if you must have Roon, that is another story because the Sony is not Roon-Ready.

Can get an actual NAS (eg Synology or QNAP) and run a music server like Minim server.
Or the Roon ROCK route already mentioned, run Roon ROCK on a NUC with music on an attached drive, and have the NUC on your network or connected via USB, if you have a Roon endpoint/player.
Some music servers allow you to attach an external USB drive with music on it, and some music servers have internal drives you can load the music onto.
I guess those are the main ways, at least what comes to mind.Main System
