Just got an email that my EtherREGEN Ethernet switch has shipped from Uptone Audio!

:exciting:

Should be getting it in a day or so, so I'll report back when I have it installed and have some first impressions.

I'm curious Puma! It was difficult not to order one, I'm still enjoying the SoTM at the moment. Congrats, looking forward to your report.

I haven't heard tbe SOtM switch, but I will be writing up a report on different configurations.

Looking forward to your impressions too. Mine won’t arrive until January.

Has anyone compared audiophile switches?

The AQ-SWITCH SE and the Uptone are priced more or less the same while the Sotm a bit more expensive.

Hello - I use the AQVox and have zero issues with it even more so after it was passively grounded to a cold water pipe, and will compare when my etherGEN arrives sometime January - figured why not?

What do you have now Puma?

I didn't have a switch per se; I had four RJ45 jacks in my ATT U-Verse Pace router, which functioned as a switch to connect the Mac Mini Roon Core to a generic, el cheapo, TP-link upstream fiber media convertor (FMC) via copper Ethernet. From there it was a direct run of LC/LC OM1-spec optical fiber to a Sonore Optical Module in the Main Rack. The OM functions as an FMC, and is then connected via copper Ethernet (Shunyata Sigma) to my SOtM UltraNeo network bridge.

What ia the network bridge. Couldn't find it on the sotm site, whare will you install the new switch,

The SOtM is the UltraNeo network bridge; the EtheREGEN is installed just before it: the run of optical fiber (from where the music server is located in another part of the house) comes into the SFP optical transceiver port on the A-side of ER, and goes out the B-side via Shunyata Sigma copper Ethernet to the SOtM.

My EtherREGEN (ER) arrived just before 6 PM Saturday night; set it up with a minor change to my prior configuration.

Here was my configuration prior to the arrival of ER using my Pace router* w/ 4 RJ45 ports† that function an "Ethernet switch".

Bedroom/Study: Mac Mini/Roon Core->copper Ethernet->Pace router->copper Ethernet->TP-link FMC w/ Sonore SOPT-specification optical tranceiver->Tripp-Lite OM-1 LC/LC fiber running direct from study to main audio rack in living room.

Living Room/Main Audio Rack:
Fiber (from bedroom/study) -> Sonore Optical Module -> copper Ethernet-> SOtM UltraNeo network bridge->USB cable->Schiit Gungnir Multibit DAC††.

Gotta say, this setup sounded pretty dang good, however....

New configuration (with changes bolded/italicized):

Bedroom/Study:
Mac Mini/Roon Core->copper Ethernet->Pace router->copper Ethernet->Optical Module->Tripp-Lite OM-1 LC/LC fiber running to main audio rack.
Living Room/Main Audio Rack:
Fiber (from bedroom/study) -> ER using SFP/optical transceiver on A-side -> copper Ethernet on ER B-side-> SOtM UltraNeo network bridge->USB cable->Schiit Gungnir Multibit DAC††.

(all Ethernet cables are Shunyata Sigma; USB cable is Shunyata Alpha USB)

First impressions right out of the box Saturday night....
Listening to Kenny Burrell's “Saturday Night Blues” on the Midnight Blue (24/192Khz) album, and I can I can hear the "reflection" of Kenny's guitar off the far wall in the recording studio...his guitar is on the left, and I can the secondary reflection of his guitar off the opposite, right wall in the room they were playing in…whoa.

A fair bit of what I noticed was a lower noise floor, a quieter, and more natural presentation with improved imaging spacious, definition and "clarity" (e.g. hearing the secondary reflection of Kenny's guitar off the opposite wall in the recording studio). And this was with <90 minutes of burn-in time.

I spent last evening (Sunday) listening to a broad selection of full symphonic classical music, everything from Joaquin Rodrigo's Concerto de Andaluz and Fantasia para un Gentilhombre to Aaron Copland's Applachian Spring, and ER is performing wonderfully. My ER had about 24 hours of burn-in on it at that point in time.

There is an accurate and mellifluous presentation of hall ambience, spaciousness, depth, width, and instrumental imaging, separation. and definition. Timpani produce incredible dynamics and scale, and the individual instrumental timbres are detailed and lifelike. I can hear and place individual instruments at the back of the orchestra with respect to placement, volume (loudness), texture and scale. The listening ease that ER imparts makes it enjoyable to listening to a range of different mic-ing, recording, and mastering for the various performances.

Looks to be quite an improvement in small details hidden in recordings. As well as soundstaging. Thanks for the post. I may have to look into one of these.

Yes, and the presentation is more natural and organic-sounding. ER helps to remove "digital glare".

I’m curious, are you replacing a switch with this one or is this an addition in the chain?

Hi Mike,
In my specific configuration, I am effectively using ER as a fiber media convertor; fiber is coming in from the bedroom/study via my Sonore Optical Module where the Roon Core is, going in to the A-side of ER, and then being output through the "clean" B-side.

There is another configuration I may try, which is to put ER in the bedroom study, use it "turned around" as a switch/FMC then run the fiber to the Optical Module in the main rack.

However, I think the first config will be better as its my hypothesis as ER has better clocks than OM.
