Could you survive with streaming music only?

No physical media or NAS at all?

I’m curious what the future holds. I generally prefer to hold physical media and enjoy the better sound, but the convenience of sheer volume of choices is bewildering.

There’s absolutely no shortage of music to listen to, as long as your internet connection is stable. With both Tidal and Qobuz plus a handful of other services, there’s really not enough time to listen to it all.

Is anyone thinking of maximizing their music stream and not even bothering with trying to keep physical media available?

I could. The sound quality is good enough and selection vast enough.

Only issue is on those rare occasions you might have internet disruption.

Re: Could you survive with streaming music only?

I could easily live with only streaming. I have both Tidal and Qobuz and between the two it almost always delivers. I do play and enjoy vinyl, but have all but eliminated CD's (even though I have some that sound better than the streaming versions). The sound quality is at the point where I no longer worry that I might not have the absolute best version of an album. Having virtually everything at your fingertips is a real joy when exploring new music. It is also why I have stuck with Roon as I find their interface to be the most useful around music exploration.

Re: Could you survive with streaming music only?

I would never give up my turntable. New music is compressed (loudness wars) so I do enjoy listening to CD's from the 1980's and very early 90's.
For me it's safe to say that I can live without streaming at all. YMMV

I could not live with only streaming, but I can and do live without streaming... I love my vinyl; I also love my digital (downloads, CDs and SACDs rips) on my server. Having my music local makes it more reliable. I have no patience with issues when I am trying to relax and enjoy music.

Re: Could you survive with streaming music only?

I have become a complete Stream-O-Phile. At one point I had thousands of CDs and close to a thousand records. I seriously did not even know what to do with all those CDs that I purchased in the early days of digital since I never listened to them.... Records was more of a collection for the sake of collecting. It is quite an effort to keep them all properly stored, to clean them, the ritual started to remind me of OCD behavior than anything useful since I could never get more than 2 or 3 albums into a listening session with all the record flipping and cleaning, etc... It got old.

So when there was a period of time when I took a pause from the hobby and deconstructed everything down to NOTHING but a pair of Sennheiser headphones and got "PHILOSOPHICAL" about my hobby, it was a perfect time to try the alternative and modern approach of discovering what is available other than physical media.

    Enter ROON, TIDAL, QOBUZ.

Let's just say for me it was a complete game changer! No more spending upwards of $600 a month on purchasing records/albums I may or may not listen to long term. No more worrying about how I am storing them, no more CLEANING!

CDs? Why would I even bother when I can listen to Qobuz at up to 192KHz and 24 bits? Most of the music is either 48 but more often 96/24 and it sounds amazing!

Why would I ever want to collect those CDs when even that media is NOT FOREVER. The earlier CDs have ROT it turns out.... Imagine that!

Here is the MOST important part though.... For the price of one record a month, I have access to 60,000,000 songs. There has not been one instance where I could not find an album I wanted to listen to on demand and discovering a dozen more interesting albums around it with help from Roon. That can NEVER be matched with physical media.

If each song was only 2 min long, at 60,000,000 songs, it would take one over 100 years of non stop listening... Fair to say the streaming/on demand model will survive the test of time? From and audiophile point of view, that is a big YES from me. I have embraced the model with enthusiasm as never before!

How the streaming services model their business and succeed or fail long term remains to be seen but hopefully it all works out because I will give this hobby up if I ever have to go back to spending so much money, effort and time futzing around with physical media. I do not need to hold the jewel box or a record in my hands to pacify myself anymore. It is very liberating!

Yes. I could easily go with streaming only. I have absolutely no issues with the SQ I obtain from streaming Tidal.

If I was was starting from scratch I wouldn't put a nickle towards vinyl.

Re: Could you survive with streaming music only?

As can be seen, my sources are only digital; nevertheless, probably about half of my listening is not be available from streaming services. Although my internet is more reliable than it was a few years ago, there are still periods of downtime or decreased bandwidth which would be annoying if streaming were my only source.

Since the question is "No physical media or NAS at all? "

If I didn't have any physical media that would mean, NO LP's or CD's, USB flash drives, hard drives of any kind, could I live with streaming, well hell yes. Ya got to have music.

Re: Could you survive with streaming music only?

    Excellent comments so far.

I try to maximize my sound quality for not the best resolution. I have been caught once or twice with no internet when I did have time to listen. Frustrating indeed.

Once I get into the music, everything else seems to fall away. I can sometimes pull up some YouTube videos on one of my work computers with the crappy little speakers or log into one of my streams and even when the groove is right, it sounds awesome.

I still have time to decide on my digital player. The Esoteric K-01XD is superb, but the longer I have it, the less I’m inclined to swap CDs. So maybe something like the N-01XD might be a great alternative, especially with a tweaked setup.

Joe, Qobuz let's you purchase your albums or individual tracks. There is "off line loading" when Qobuz and I believe Tidal as well are on portable devices. So being without the internet is not the end of music... I was without power for 4.5 days and still listened to my iphone and sennheisers while charging my iphone from a gas generator outside. When there is a will, there is a way! Can't be without music. I can be without the fancy gear and I was for some years as an "awakening phase" of my life

i could not survive without streaming -- and, yes, i could certainly live with streaming only ...provided qobuz and roon are available.

in my use case, downloads and ripped CDs on local storage are only for the very few titles not available streaming. also, i have a few titles that i downloaded in DSD format -- but this is not 100% necessary and i could live without it.

Lots of "officially" unreleased recordings as well as official live concert recordings (many are available for streaming via the nugs.net app, but only in MP3; downloads are typically 24/48 or 24/96), and OOP and limited edition CD's and some LP rips not on any streaming services (as yet?)

Re: Could you survive with streaming music only?

One other thing to add is how people prefer their music, or the level that to them is "ok". I may not have the most expensive gear but I definitely can appreciate higher resolution levels. I hear a huge difference is DSD in my digital versus PCM, and the higher the DSD the better, so therefore to get the best I prefer a format that cannot be and may never be able to be streamed. I hear a large difference in DSD256 versus DSD64 for example.

Although I understand that even streaming can be up sampled I do notice a difference in the better resolutions prior to going through the up sample stage. Better in better out! In my view a DSD file up sampled to DSD512 sounds better than a PCM file up sampled to DSD512 (of course with exceptions).

I do believe that my vinyl gives me maximum enjoyment, followed by DSD512 files, DSD256.... to a minimum that I can accept which is CD quality ripped to the server.

Another consideration is portable use. I often will listen to high level PCM and DSD files with my Astell&Kern through my Abyss cans while at work. This would be rather difficult with streaming. The same files I store on my server I can carry with me on my portable player.

Absolutely agree. I had alternative listening when the power was out for 3 days a couple of months ago.

While computers have made many parts of life so much better/easier, I’m starting to dislike fiddling with them of making sure I’m backed up, etc..

i love youtube myself. what a great thing!
you mention it, online audio is very enjoyful even for audiophiles. and can be pimped to very high levels with top switches etc.
as far as others say, in context of the thread title, the best streamer systems are streamer only. that means nothing connected to the system than the streamer. no server or transport or anything. thats what i am puzzling together myself.

Hmm, not sure I can relate to that Joe. I love getting behind the computer and on Roon... So much music to discover. I don't listen from the sweet-spot anymore. I find that ritual to be too HiFi in approach. For 30 years I sat exactly between the speakers making sure the cabinets were aligned within 1/8 of an inch or better for that perfect presentation.... No more... After living with headphones, I've learned to appreciate the music itself much more instead of fussing over gear. Sure, I will still sit down in the sweet spot from time to time and enjoy a cup of coffee or an adult beverage for that special piece of music to take in the sound stage, the depth and separation of instruments, to marvel in the fleshed out and holographic presentation on some of the better recordings but for the most part, I enjoy music simply in the same room as my system.

As to backing up a computer? It backs itself up through Norton at night...

Youtube is also fantastic for discovering music and watching music videos. I enjoy the Deutsche Grammophon channel for classical music and there are tons of others. I have a great headphone station that is dedicated to youtube and Roon/Qobuz late night listening. I have a few various headphone amps, solid state and tube and a few pairs of headphones depending on the mood. Let me tell you, it sound pretty damn great! Even youtube!

I got to say, even being a professional computer guy (programmer, databases, etc.) there are many times I get sick of fiddling also. I just want to sit down and listen and not have to worry about logging in, etc., etc. . And being a bit crazy about things, I have to keep three backups of everything.... so yea, totally understand Joe .

Ha, Serge I was being a little over dramatic in regards to my computer ills. I know it’s really not a big deal.

Depending on when I listen, I’m either all over the place or nicely positioned between my speakers.

My point is really saying that I’m more than satisfied with what comes through the Internet. Even maximizing the stream certainly helps.

This seems to be a great time for music lovers. I’m extremely happy.

What the likes of Qobuz, Tidal, Spotify did is to open up the world music library and hand us the passes to enjoy any music we want, at anytime and it only keeps getting better and better. Vinyl does not last, it gets worn, CDs rot away, let's hope the streaming model keeps going!

I am doing that right now.

Let me explain what I have done. I am a Roon user and Qobuz subscriber. In Roon, I created Tags named "My LPs", "My Cassettes", and "My CDs". Then I went over my entire physical media collection and made sure that I added a digital version to my Roon library (from Qobuz) and tagged it appropriately. So right now, if I feel like listening to my digitized LP collection, in Roon I go to the "My LPs" tag and I can browse and play anything I want from my LP collection. Same thing for the other tagged categories.

Not all my LPs or Cassettes were available in Qobuz. For example, I am missing about 25 LPs from my collection of nearly 350 LPs. About one-half of those are very old LPs that I had already replaced with newer recordings with much better sound. Altogether, I think that I have 10-15 LPs that I would like to have in my digital library that are not available in Qobuz. Similarly with my cassettes.

I ripped my entire CD collection years ago. Again, not 100% of my ripped CDs are available in Qobuz. What I have done is to add the Qobuz version to my Roon library and then hide the duplicates from my ripped CD collection. I find that the Qobuz version of my CDs usually sound equal to or better than my ripped CDs (sometimes that could be due to Qobuz having remastered versions or versions in high resolution).

My intention right now is to rip the missing LPs and Cassettes that I want to add to my Roon library. Once I have done that, my entire physical collection of LPs, Cassettes, and CDs will be available digitally via Roon. At that time I could literally store away my entire physical media. I have already stored away my CDs (in the attic).

With a combination of a subscription to a music service and ripping the physical media that is not available from that music service you can literally put away your entire physical media collection. You do not need a NAS, but you DO need some kind of storage device (like a USB hard drive) to be able to store the music that you want that is not available from your music service provider.

One last thing, now that I have tagged my physical media, I can actually open "My LPs" tag and export to a spreadsheet my entire LP collection. For the first time ever, I can see in print all the LPs that I own. Same thing for my cassettes and CDs.

Re: Could you survive with streaming music only?

I haven't turned my CD player on in over a year since I have ripped most CDs I like. Nor have I ever streamed anything. However, every week I buy 2-3 downloads from HDTracks. Currently, I have more music than I can listen to the rest of my life. However, maybe in a few years after all the streaming services shake out, and the software settles down I might try streaming. The problem is I only listen to music on Tuesday and Friday night so streaming really isn't appropriate.

I have not turned on my spinner for anything other than ripping an SACD is a few years now. I also have a hard enough time now picking out what to listen to .... I agree, more music now than I could ever listen to how it is, but I do picked up a few albums here and there getting my vinyl collection to a decent level. I do also purchase an album from HD Tracks every so often, especially when the vinyl version is not available yet.

I could live with only streaming except for when the internet goes down. And being remote like I am - it's more common than you would hope.

I use the Lumin L1 as my source and it's so easy and bullit proof you don't have to do much computing. So the L1 plus streaming is perfect.

When you say “streaming” I think of Qobuz / Tidal and not downloading titles or ripping my CDs. So, I use a more limited definition of the term, though downloading titles and playing ripped CDs are a form of streaming too ...

So, I enjoy physical media more - better quality. If there was only streaming (my definition) ... I wouldn’t own the system I presently have. Streaming is good, but IMO it’s not prime time yet. Still lots to work out. Dependability of provider, weather, equipment, etc ... But it’s getting better everyday...

Sorry but exactly how do I get 192KHz/24 bits out of a CD? Because I get that quality out of Qobuz. Just curious

The music I presently enjoy wasn’t originally heard using 192KHz/24. I like the original tracks the way I remember them “back then.” For me this is better, this is real quality.

Yes. I largely do now purchasing only a few titles a year which if a CD or SACD, are ripped to my NAS and played exclusively that way. At this point, I rarely pay attention to whether ROON is playing Qobuz or from my NAS. I don’t have a spinner connected to my system.

Say for example you live in Colorado, or in California; you are eighty years old and you started collecting Opera and Classical music LPs since the age of seven. In seventy-three years you have amassed a fairly sizeable music collection on LPs. You also own a decent audio hi-fi system of music reproduction to honor life.

Last month your home was completely devastated by a fire, and along with your LP collection and everything else.

Can you survive with music streaming only? Can you adapt to a new world, a new life, lifestyle?

The music I enjoy best was all mostly recorded on Tape and with Tube microphones.. Not digitally and not on CD. Oh well. Qobuz will have to do.

Sad but true. All one has is memories and maybe an insurance check in hand. Good luck restoring that collection... Hopefully as long as one keeps up with monthly fee of $15 for the Qobuz studio subscription, the 60,000,000 songs are not going anywhere no matter what....

I gave that example because someone just shared very similar in another forum just couple days ago.
Plus I could share some of my own experiences.

The answer to Joe's question is yes, and the time it takes to re-adapt and be on that music wavelength between our heart, soul and the artist musicians playing is unique to each one of us. Music is music, no matter the medium, ... it's the connection, the inner essence.

Amen. Over the years I even enjoyed the transistor radio in the garage when the favorite tunes were playing and I was working on a project. It's all about the music or it should be really. The gear and medium is merely the messenger, not the message itself.

Respectfully, re-read what I wrote. I didn’t comment on how the music was recorded, rather I commented on how I heard and remembered it. In other words how I listened to it back then.

I’m glad you like Qobuz and that’s what I use also - and if that is the ultimate for you, then so be it. But it’s still different than what I remember. My CDs on the other hand give me what I personally seek. Hopefully a turntable will join it in the near future.

You certainly have a unique view on the topic. Not sure how how many live music events I attended in the past but it was a lot less than approx 10,000 albums I have sorted out in Roon so far. I certainly do not remember even one live event other than it was either loud or the acoustics were bad or the performance was only mediocre. So to me it makes no sense to compare. I listen to the best albums or work of any performer in whatever resolution available to me (typically as good or better than a CD and certainly a live performance that I can remember.) But whatever turns you on! I still own a few dozen SACD that I spin from time to time so I don’t forget how to do it...

Yes, I remember very few of the concerts I went to either. But I’m speaking of playing vinyl and CDs 500+ times each and having that specific sound ingrained in my soul. That’s what I’m use to, not some altered version of it.

    Serge,

There is simply a difference between our preferences. It is more important for me to listen to music that I have a listening frame of reference to in the past, and that is not as important to you. No harm either way, but it will determine not only the media we prefer, but the equipment we purchase, etc.

For me and many others, CD quality is still better than streaming quality is at this time. As has been said many times before, this is a rather subjective hobby.

Definitely no harm either way. There is only one thing that matters and that is the enjoyment of the hobby and music itself. If physical media brings you closer to nirvana, so be it!

If I had no option, then yes I could live with streaming.

My efforts and resource have put together a stellar playback option.

I prefer to have options, and will continue forward with vinyl and strongly considering R2R.

Purchased Qobuz music can be downloaded, so that is not a problem with internet or service outage.

For Tidal / Qobuz offline modes, they are not supported by the native Tidal / Qobuz playback in Lumin or Esoteric network players. As a workaround, I guess it may be possible to use AirPlay to play offline music stored in the Tidal / Qobuz apps on the iPhone to Lumin or Esoteric network players.

Over a morning cup of coffee, I added 17 more albums of Ben Webster that I somehow missed the first time around for a total of 62 albums.
Added 6 more albums to Sonny Rollins tag for a total of 106 albums.
Added a new performer (Houston Person) for a total of 34 albums.

Total time spent on acquiring all the albums above 4 min.

    Total extra expenditure $0.

The day has only started and I have more performers I need to add...

Safe to say my listening habits of streaming are not changing anytime soon.

Re: Could you survive with streaming music only?

Joe, not making fun but you wanting to hear the music the way you remember it reminds me of a good friend of mine. I understand what you are saying, my friend is a bit to the extreme.

My friend had a LP collection of 1,000's, he used to make compilation cassettes for himself. He eventually sold the collection, I think divorce led to that. Now, he buys LP's records them to his computer, then burns a CD, then gets rid of the LP. He is into oldies and songs that charted.

I tried to encourage him to utilize better technics and equipment, he says, "hell when I heard these songs I only had one speaker in my car" and "from being in the Navy my high range is shot". I used to make fun of him for buying cheap car speakers etc. he could afford better, he just didn't care. I tried to explain the virtues of a better cartridge, might as well be talking to one of my kids, LOL So now he just has thousands of these burnt CD's.

Not saying you are anything like that, I just had to share since you triggered the memories.

Re: Could you survive with streaming music only?

Physical vs. streaming, this is rare so far but check this out. As I was doing some listening after installing my new amp. I was playing this song from America off the Greatest Hits album, I noticed the vocals were all bunched in the middle and the guitar on the right was closer to the middle and not as pronounced.

A couple days later I played the song and it was as I remembered, the vocals spaced out and both guitars, left/right, are about even in presence.

Then it dawned on me I have this album ripped from CD, I'm sure a very old copy, possibly original. I also have a version added to my favorites from Tidal. So I compared and sure enough the not so good version was from the CD. The one from Tidal must have been remastered or from a different master. This is one instance where the streaming version was definitely to my preference.

I have had the opposite happen as well, with Sully Erna, Avalon, the Tidal version sounded noticeably worse than I remembered, so I went to my HD to listen to my rip which was much better.

Re: Could you survive with streaming music only?

I don't have any high end dedicated streaming device or accounts. If I listen to anything digital, it is flac or 320 MP3s from my hard drives.

I had a friend over last night that brought a stack of albums mostly from 1972 that have not been played in 30 years. As we listened, I read the Album notes which is what is lacking when you just stream. I was surprised to find that Tod Rundgren played lead on Hall & Oats. I would never have learned that from a stream.

I would miss fidgeting with the CD case and inserts, or Album covers if I only streamed.

It's sort of like a junkie, half of the addiction is everything that leads up to playing the disk or album. Hard to kick the habit.

There are tons of pictures, notes and biographic info as well as PDF files now with album booklets (when available) on Roon. The fidgeting with jackets and jewel cases in your hands part is still not available from any streaming service.
