Anyone using Linux vs OS X or Windows for their computing and music needs?

All the distributions have come a long way.

I'm thinking about setting up a Linux machine again (mainly for fun and experimentation).

Have you switched or added a Linux box to your computing needs? Which distribution are you using?

I am using Roon for music. I started with a Mac. Eventually settled on a Windows 10 PC running HQPlayer and up converting everything to DSD 512. To do that I needed a Windows machine with a powerful processor and video card.

I had a Raspberry Pi running a version of Linux. Used it as a Roon end point with a Hifi Berry Hat. If you want to “experiment” a RPi might be an option. You can do lots of projects with it.

I have both a gaming PC (i7) running Win10 and a Nuc8i7 and honestly, running Roon, I couldn’t tell the difference between the two.

I'm using Roon Rock on an Intel NUC. It has been wonderfully reliable.

I like to play around but don't want to get stuck bricking a computer for my music.

Since I am running Roon and HQPlayer, upsampling to DSD512 I use a Windows 10 machine. Older version of the machine than Nico has but it handles the up-sampling just fine!

    Roon Rock server build....

Not fanless but very quiet and using attached usb drive. I should investigate the LPS.

I always tell people to use a fanless server, even if the fan is inaudible. However, Plato X7 fanless chassis is not enough to cool NUC7i7BNH unless you turn down the CPU performance.

As for the LPS, I believe this NUC is basically the same class as Nucleus+, so the requirements are the same, i.e. a P3 is not enough but the P8 is, as discussed in another thread.

I’ll check out the other threads and see what’s better for a totally fanless build with LPS.

joe -- for a fanless build check out HDPlex. their cases and heat dissipation system are quite robust. also, they have a number of options for internal and external power. i am currently building a fanless using the following components:

    • HDPlex H3 V2 chassis
    • HDPlex 400W HiFi DC-ATX internal power supply
    • h370 chipset mini-ITX motherboard
    • i7-8700 cpu
    • 2 x m.2 NVMe SSDs
    • 8GB ddr4 ram

initially, i will configure it to run ROCK. however, it could also be set up to run win10 + roon server or linux + roon server. i must confess this project is quite a lot of fun. so, if you like tinkering -- come on in, the water is fine.

HDPlex also have LPS units units to consider.
