Seems the media player space is heating up with mainstream DSD acceptance and PCM based DXD support being introduced. Aurender now have a NAS dependent product which seems to be positioned to compete against the Lumin?

Are we ever going to get passed the DSD vs DXD format propositions?

    Steve,

I'm not sure if the Aurender product is just a player (no DAC), no separate power supply, etc.

As for format wars....what else is new? Just get a network music player that handles everything (like the Lumin S1).

Boy, is Linn asleep at the wheel or what? They invented this space and then dropped the ball - big time.

They kinda did the same with their turntable too.

Has anyone auditioned in a familiar system the Triode Corp. Reference M212 (parallel SET with two 212s per mono amp)?

Iíve heard them, owned the Triode 845 amps and currently own the statement 300b amps. The 212 isn't that great with bass control in a full range speaker (but no SET really does). If the speaker has active bass, rock on.

Donít get caught up in the big SET power. Above 20-30 watts, a well executed Push Pull can provide magic and power and better bass control.

That being said, check out the big VIVA Aurora monoblocks for big SET sound, with few trade offs.

Also, in the push pull camp, consider some of the big Jadis amps and even some of the CJ gear for SET sounds in a PP package.

All of this aside, I️ think a Gryphon amp would match well with Gryphon speakers.

If youíre after true SET sounds (300b), then only high efficient speakers like Avantgarde Trio XDís will work. The combo is magic.

    Howdy, Mike!

    Thank you for your thoughts!

I like the Viva Audio Aurora very much! I am trying to solve for > 100 watts with SET so that means Triode Reference M212, Mastersound PF100, Wavac and NAT Magma New. The single giant tubes are a little scary and so I find the parallel SET Mastersound PF100 (four 845s) very interesting.

On the Class A, push-pull side I agree with you on the Jadis. Also the Zesto Eros 300 (as well as the Ayon Orthos XS) are possible contenders. However, here I am most interested in the new JA200 Mk. II.

I would be wary of the 212 tube myself. Not only is it gigantic in size, but it has a different sound. It's not as warm as the 211, nor as sweet as the 845 and it certainly can't touch the 300b/45 type tubes.

I think once you get over 20-30 watts with SET, you lose the advantage. You're using so many tubes in parallel and you're also using some oddball tubes, which have their own unique sound (good or bad).

The issue for me with the JA200 mk2 for me, is the 6550/EL34 tubes. That is my least favorite tube, sonically.

For that romantic, lush, classic tube sound, I would look at CJ and VAC. Both can delivery plenty of current and power for demanding loudspeakers.

Are you still on track for the Gryphon Pendragons? Do you know the impedance dip? I know it's a 6ohm speaker, but if it starts to dip below 4ohms, a SET is not what I would consider. But you should be fine since the bass is powered.

If it was me, I would get a Colosseum or Mephisto stereo and be done with it.
