Hello folks,
Just a few words of my last audio discovery.
The old Decca FFSS mk1. We are back to 1958.
They must be rebuilt by John Wright in UK, the actual Decca boss. Unfortunately, John will retire in october. So if you are interested in trying one you should hurry.
An old audiophile friend came to my house with 3 of them. The mk1, 2 and 3.
I preferred the slightly euphonic sound of the 1 to the more neutral / analytic sound of the two others.
You will need either a Decca arm or a SME adapter to use it on an other arm. Needs a heavy arm : the anount of energy released by the stylus is huge because of the special mounting system. The stylus is united with the coils by a little metallic bridge. Compliance is close to zero. Records have to be very very clean and in good shape to avoid big pops sometimes. When these conditions are met, the tracking is smooth with extremely low surface noise.
The level output is as high as a MM. No SUT is needed them.
I find the sound of this cartridge to be the closest to live and real music I ever heard.
It has a presence, dynamic and PrAT absolutely fabulous. Extremely close to Master tapes.
The synergy with my TD124 is perfect. The Decca are often used on these old queens.
The timbres are not the richest and most luxurious ones. But the dynamics, transparency, stereo image are out of this world.
The bass is for bass lovers : deep, super clean and super fast.
If you are a vinyl fan, you owe to yourself to listen once in your life to one of the old FFSS cartridges.
They deliver music like no other thing on the market.
I am addicted.
