    New 861 stereo amp

Boulder has a new amp seems designed to go nicely with the 812.

New protection circuitry enables the 861 to deliver greater current at maximum output without fear of damage to the amplifier's electronics

Space saving design is the same footprint (width and depth) as the 812 DAC Preamplifier.

Love Boulder, but are $18K of compact separates really going to trump an integrated amp, for their target market?

No, but I’m not sure that’s their target.

I think an 1161/1160 is a good target.

Competing with integrated amps….not their goal for 861/812. More small space, lifestyle system. Built in DAC/Streamer/Headphone amp and all.

I still get so much joy from the 1161. When the time comes to downsize I would definitely consider the 861 if it’s similar. I don’t require much volume, but I’m in love with the Boulder SQ and build.

Right, 812 + 861 makes little sense to me when the 866 exists. Are you even saving footprint with the 2 boxes? More cables, less than half the power. The only advantage is the headphone amp.

Is that 50 watts of Class A power? The website does not say. Seems unlikely given its size and the heatsinks but Boulder use their own Class A design to minimize heat in the upper level 2160 and 3060 amps.

A/B. The 8 series is nice for an office or bedroom system. But a bigger room needs 1161 and up IMO.

Probably irrelevant. You’re better off with an 1161 IMO vs two 861’s.
