Re: Boulder 866
I also got interested in this integrated after watching Mike's video with Magico A5. Sounds superb. Mike also posted another video on Esoteric F-03a with A5 and that sounds very good as well.
Mike, how do they compare ?

Re: Boulder 866
The Boulder is a winner. It has that engaging, full, meat on the bones, musical sound just like the 2160 amp. Incredible amp. World class.
The Esoteric is very very good as well, but 30 watts, so choose your speakers wisely. My Systems: http://www.audioshark.org/showthread...481#post158481

I thought it was interesting you can add a photo for the input, like a photo of your actual turntable or whatever. You typically don't see flashy features like this on high end gear.

Re: Boulder 866
I've been considering a new integrated and this one has my interest. How do you think the 866 stacks up relative to my Accuphase E-650? I value strong bass control and smoothness in the upper frequencies. The additional wattage isn't a big deal for me since my speakers are 96db and I listen at low volumes. My only experience with Boulder (and it was favorable) has been their separates and that was years ago. Travel restrictions have made it nearly impossible to audition in person so I'm left to rely on others' impressions.

Re: Boulder 866
Very different. The Boulder 866 sounds like a class A amp. Rich, warm, musical. The Diablo 300 has a big bold sound, with thunderous monoblock bass and grip and a huge soundstage. I was talking to a customer this morning who was debating between these two integrated amps. He was coming from a Prima Luna and wanted to be done with tubes, done with the heat, but wanted to retain the sound. I suggested the 866 to meet his needs.

Hi Maxdog,
Any updates on the accuphase e650 VS the 866.
I am trying to decide between the two myself too.
Thanks!

Re: Boulder 866
These are two very different amps in topology and characteristics. The choice depends on the speakers used and personal preferences of course. I've got both here on permanent demonstration since a while back together with many others within the same segment.
The Boulder 866 is a powerful Class A/B amp at 200W/8Ohm with the option of adding an internal DAC and streamer module. This amp excels in control, power and uncolored neutrality while also being very engaging offering great drive and excitement. A setup and forget kind of amp with great build quality.
The Accuphase E-650 is a Class A amp at 35W/8Ohm with the option of adding an internal DAC + Phono stage. More moderate in power and drive capabilities, but sufficient enough for most speakers at normal listening levels. Accuphase is more dense, saturated and seductive and a bit darker in tonality compared to Boulder and also a bit more laid back. That being said, Accuphase of today is not slow or too relaxed with very satisfying dynamics, transparency and resolution.
Hope that helps.

Re: Boulder 866
Thank you, this was an extremely useful post.
My speakers are Devore O/96 and I am a tube guy and do like a dense, rich but high resolution sound. So looks like Accuphase would be my preference if I were in your store and listening to them side by side.
I have heard the E-650s and love them, but was wondering about the 866 given the rave reviews and my fear that the E650 will soon be upgraded since it's been out for 4 years now.

Re: Boulder 866
I would think that Accuphase might be more to your liking and taste among those two alternatives - yes. There's always the E-800 as well if your budget allows it.
If you get the chance - try to find a dealer who carries Riviera Levante as well. A truly magnificent hybrid integrated amp where you could choose in between Class A or A/B with the opportunity of tube rolling as an additional benefit for fine tuning the sound.

Re: Boulder 866
I have had my eye on the Levante, but there are no dealers locally. Also I already have a tube amp (Nagra 300p) so an SS makes more sense to me right now.
I have been debating whether to get the E800, I certainly don't need the extra power, 30W is plenty on this speaker, but I do know someone who had the E650 and E800 on my same speakers and finally chose the E800 because it gave him a bigger sound.
What are your impressions on the E650 vs E800? The E800 has had certainly some mixed reviews while I cannot find anyone who has anything but positive things to say about E650. Since I cannot hear them side by side, that's all I have to go by.

Re: Boulder 866
hi essrand
do you still own the tube dac? never heard any feedback since you bought it. do you like it?
that leads to the question why an integrated. in case you would want a ss for the tube dac, then i d go for the classic amp. perfectly finetuned to each other.

Re: Boulder 866
Hi U-sound,
I was planning to write a long feedback about the Nagra Tube DAC once it was properly broken in. And also a thank you note to you for stirring me in the direction of Nagra Tube DAC + Nagra 300P combo.
I really really love the DAC. But there were quite a few hiccups with the DAC, so haven't listened to it as much as I should have (it came dead on arrival and had to be sent back etc etc).
But the Nagra Tube DAC + Nagra 300P, just listening to it the first time, I was like, "I am done."
I am keeping the Nagra 300p which I like better than the Nagra Classic.
But I was interested in a SS amp as well, just for change (and for different genres of music), and also not to run those 300b tubes too much (I forget to switch off the amps all the time).
I like the Accuphase E-650 that I heard a lot, and get the feeling that it with the Nagra Tube DAC might be mind-blowing. I already have a Nagra amp, so going Nagra SS would be too similar a sound signature, hence the accuphase.
Let's see, if this happens.

Re: Boulder 866
I had the 650 and loved it. I also have a tube dac (lampizator pacific) and that plus the 650 was a great combination. At the time, I was driving a pair of TAD cr-1s, which are harder to drive than the Devore. I have always thought that accuphase plus Devore would be a good combo, but have not heard it.

Re: Boulder 866
When turned on the 866 should have automatically reduced the volume from its previous setting. Although there is a very brief, sometimes shocking, "blast from the past". i.e. it starts at the previous setting before reducing the volume automatically.
What speakers are you using with the 866?

Re: Boulder 866
When I logged into Roon, a song immediately started , and the volume was maxed out. Rather startling to say the least. All is OK tho...
Have had it running since yesterday , and am pleased with what I'm hearing....Treble is a bit more refined and definitely smoother than the Accuphase, thus far. Speakers are Persona 9H's, Mike's fav..))..They do need some smoothing in the treble, and this amp has definitely been a step in the right direction. Female vocals do sound more relaxed and for that I"m appreciative. Funny, but the resolving power of modern electronics and speakers seems a double edged sword. So often now I can hear the 2,3 or more voices backing up singer, and often I think it actually detracts from the artist..Never a problem with the Heathkit I built, or the Dyna 400.
Do like the one box solution, and having the DAC/Roon together...good chance I'll sell my PSAudio DAC and CD player, asI have a Modwright Oppo 103 sitting around, and CD's seem to be listened to less frequently..
Anyway, I'm happy so far...beautiful piece of equipment and seems to deliver on it's promise.
Do wonder what the recommendation is for power. Have it on a Shunyata Denali 2 at the moment, with an Alpha V2 NR cord....wonder if this would be better direct into the outlet?

Re: Boulder 866
Thanks....as to the reason for the shift, I believe the proper audiophile term is " Whim"..))
After all the great comments, it seemed like a good move, and as I can probably dispose of the Accuphase and my DSD DAC, it should be almost a tossup financially. And now it's all in one....less cables, power cords, etc....time in my life to try something new and also simplify.
Strange as well, but years ago I got a Resolution Audio GNS Opus 21, which I still have . Always had great admiration for Steve Huntley and his work, and I see he's now with Boulder. He always struck me as a straight shooter, and if Boulder is a line he likes, It's a good recommendation for me.
Also , I'm Canadian...We don't know any better...))).
The E650 is a really good integrated...just had to try the Boulder....may well be a sideways move...time will tell...

Re: Boulder 866
essrand.
Have had the Boulder plugged in for almost a week now, using it mainly for streaming and TV so far. Just a couple of CD's .
My main impression is it has a bit more clarity compared to the E650. This can be a double edged sword in my opinion, tho. Poorly recorded music is even more obvious, voices in a harmony seem more separated, which while more "real" may not be as pleasant to listen to. I believe this is an issue as the equipment gets better in all of audio, tho. And it may be an indication of issues in other equipment ....time will tell as I listen more.
Great imaging, unquestionably.Possibly better than the Accuphase, but they both are excellent in this regard.Layers of sound, very subtle sounds on the recording are more obvious with this amp.
Not sure yet on the DAC section.....would like to listen to it with the Directstream as well, soon,. and see if I can hear any differences. Need to get a better ethernet wire in any event , and when I do will try do some serious listening.
Wondering if I should run this directly from the wall, or from my Denali?..Any advice appreciated from those who have much more knowledge about this than I ever will.
Not completely sold on the "no Remote"...a pain to have to enter the password into my phone to wake it, and think I'll order a cheap one to try.
Great dynamics for sure, seems to have more headroom than the E650...and my speakers are very efficient. I do like it loud at times, and this amp doesn't disappoint. Like the "sleep" mode as opposed to having to either leave the Accuphase on all the time, or powering it off manually.
Not what you need help decide, I'm sure...will add what I can as it breaks in . Definitely worth a demo if possibly. One of the problems with the lack of dealers now....if you live in a major market, you can hear these...otherwise it's risk.

Re: Boulder 866
maxdog923,
I have one of each of the cheap remotes recommended by Boulder. They both work great for on/off/volume/mute/source. But that is all I need because I don't stream (yet). Both remotes are connected via small USB nubs. I am not sure what they are called because they are the smallest USB devices I have ever seen.
The system I use them on is in my great room. One remote is at my listening chair and the other is on my kitchen counter so I can mute annoying commercials or adjust volume while doing KP. I prefer the rectangle shaped remote over the tapered one.
I highly recommend getting one. Not much of a cost considering the investment you have already made.

Re: Boulder 866
Enjoyed this! I drive past the Boulder headquarters on my way to work, but have never actively listened to their products or stopped by. Their 866 is very intriguing. I've had Accuphase, so your descriptions are interesting. I wish you could throw in a final comparison with an E-800 in your system!

Re: Boulder 866
This was very useful, thanks for the post.
Guess at some point you will know which is the more "musical" amplifier and one you prefer listening for long periods.
I have heard the Accuphase E-650 in my system, it was very impressive, almost as engaging as my tube amp and in some genres of music far more involving.
Where I live, it's impossible to audition the 866 in my system, but the dealer is willing to ship over the Boulder 1100 series amplifier so I can get an idea of the Boulder sound signature. Not sure how close in sound signatures the 866 and the 1160 amp are though.
Also 866 is probably 50% more in price. 9500$ vs 14000$.
I guess it has to be a big jump up in sound, for me to go for it vs the Accuphase.
